Sup all. Now I have been using IRC for several years now, and I love it. But now with the RIAA going after kazaa, it occurs to me it only be a matter of time before they get to IRC, if not already.
Anyhow, here's a provoking thought concerning IRC. Let's say that an RIAA member sets up an fserve and then they recorded the names of all the people that logged in to request files. From there, the RIAA could have your ip address (right?) and if so, they could track you down.
Maybe I'm paranoid, but who's to say it couldn't happen? Who knows, maybe its happenning right now? I don't know, but I need something to calm my mind. Well, later folks.

Anyone can get your IP address in IRC by simply /whois . Unless the network youre ate is super cool and has vhosts or you run on a proxy.

From what I've seen so far they seem to be going after the easy targets. But yeah there is a good chance they might start trolling the IRCs because there are large numbers of files traded there. Any type of public hub or gathering place faces more potential danger than say a locked private DC hub or Waste hub. It may be something to look into eventually but at this time IMO you're ok as it's more trouble for them to do it when they have plenty of easy pickings on Kazaa and similar networks. Of course that could change tommorrow.......

I think it's alot less likely on IRC really, but it is very possible. Alot of networks mask your true ip and host, but it is still VERY easy to get that information in a transfer. Then again, if you are downloading something you still are NOT at risk as of yet. It is the uploading that they are watching.. so leeching is still safe on IRC.
If you want true security you will only download and upload to trusted people, which can easily be accomplished by putting a key (+k) on your room, making it private as in only people on an op list can enter (+p i think), or using an app like DC or Waste to enter secure areas.

If the RIAA is snooping around IRC, I doubt you'll ever hear about it.
From what I hear there are some serious bad boys on IRC. The RIAA has enough trouble trying to keep a website up. I don't think the RIAA wants to pick the IRC fight.
It's like the previous poster said, the RIAA is only interested in easy targets.

Many people here confess about, self proclaimed, illegal behavior. I do not believe that most of this behavior is legally "illegal" yet. But it will be if everyone continues to proclaim that it is. However, as many people seemed to be concerned about ways that your behavior can be exposed to the RIAA, have you ever considered that little link a the bottom right of each post.

Is anyone doing anything to protect themselves from a subpoena or an exploit of ZeroPaid? It seems a simple way to prove "willfull" infringement, when someone publicly delares it to be true.
Anyone?

By following the forum rules and not self incrimidating yourself.
Other than that your whole arguement is based on the sterotype that all p2p users are doing illegal things which is not completely true. Also this is a p2p portal/information site and is not a warez.

Actually, I think you miss read my post. It does say, "self proclaimed, illegal behavior."
If you search my posts, you will find that I am advancing the argument that, NO p2p users are doing anything illegal. They only think they are.
I do agree that following the forum rules is a good, sensible thing to do.

I got the peerguardian and i did a search for home pages regarding ip's to block, There is irc spy bots ip it gave me to block as well as BAYTSp which on their websight claims to search mirc channels and servers for copywritten files.. Mostly software i can imagine. But the movies seem to appear on MIRC, so they may be searching there. ALl i can suggest is to download from a CHANNEL MODERATOR with the @ symbol, and a + symbol.. And if your using a script that i have, you can set to only share to moderators and voiced people.

irc is an unlikely target simply because its damn hard to prove who's really doing the sharing. even if you get the ip address of someone supposedly uploading files, there is a good chance that the computer owner has no idea, because their computer is infected with a trojan that turns them into an fserv without their knowledge. this is not only possible, but common.
its also not reasonable to go after the network owners, since they are not responsible for what their users do and would have a hell of a time stopping them if they wanted to.

There is more than one person in the house, which is true of most people, so whatever I say, they'd have a damn hard time proving that *I* said it. Even trying would be a waste of time and money for them, not to mention yet additional really really bad press.
I suspect they may, in fact, actually LIKE ZeroPaid. This is a pretty decent place to have a rational discussion (at least some times), and a person doesn't get too heavily griefed if they post a dissenting message compared to the norm here. ZeroPaid gives them, and their advocates, a place to discuss things with those who disagree. (No, I'm not one of them, although I have enough empathy to see the p2p situation from a variety of perspectives.)
As for IRC - they are almost definitely there. I know for sure the MPAA is, and has been for quite a while, since I got a cease-and-desist letter from them for sharing some movies. Later I switched ISPs and decided that since *I* could personally program some information harvesting bots that would bust tons of people, then they have probably hired others just as capable and probably moreso - so I'm deep underground now. No public sharing for Jonny, Jonny is one paranoid mofo now. ;)

Does anyone know the standard notice displayed on every IRC server right before you browse thru contents of it?
It goes something like this... "This is a private server.... If you in any way associateted with RIAA , law enforcement etc. I do not give you permition to enter my server, ( and there is some privacy law given signed by Clinton."
Now as you see... if anyone will enter and get some kind of evidence of distributing "copyrighted material", acording to law... Any evidence obtained illegaly and braking the law, is not submissible in a caurt of law... hence... no proof, no case...
(but i could be wrong....)

you could have it on Fserve and scripts where their is a dcc session, if some time goes by it disconnects you and the info is gone. But i dont know about logging and such. I do know their is a phrase before saying that you have no legal right to access this server and gives the clause and where it can be found on the dmca.

atleast he's trying? not really he was banned from zeropaid from being a gay troll. It's important to be careful when you comment on something, when not knowing the history. Psixalis is right, this guy needs to give it a break.

Maybe you are right.
But what I had in mind was he does something, and all we do is talk, So if everyone will just sit back and watch, eventually they will knock on your doors too, and cut your dick off...
