Windows Messenger

The only annoyance I've found in my time using XP is the Windows Messenger. I've recently set up my email through Outlook Express, and now every time I open it, Windows Messenger opens to and I see it in the task bar. I know Microsoft doesn't want you to get rid of it, as there are no options to uninstall it. (even though it's a completely USELESS feature) However, I know there has to be someone out there that knows how to take it out completely, I've heard people talking about how they got rid of theirs in other forums. So, anybody know~?

I use xp-Antispy. It allows you to disable messenger from loading when you use outlook. It also allows you to permanently remove it. I use Trillian in its place.

You can disable the Windows Messenger...........if you wan't.


Start>Run>services.msc

Right Click on the messanger entry in the "Name" column.

Choose properties>Startup Type (box).

Select "Disabled" then hit "apply" then "Ok".

It won't run the next time you boot, but for now, you'll still have to exit/close messenger.

If you do not use Windows Messenger then why not uninstall it. Every time you start up your computer, Messenger also starts up which can slow everything down and use up more system resources. To uninstall it:

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

in the text box and click OK. You will see a progress bar appear shortly as it deletes its files and it will then ask you to reboot. After the reboot the program will be gone.

That's a completely different type of messenger. Hence, it says, "This service is not related to Windows Messenger" in the description.

best way I found to stop it is to go into its options and disable "load windows messenger when windows starts" is one thing. then when in outlook express you can untick the box that says "load windows messenger or msn messenger." Another is a roundabout way in which you make AIM your default instant messenger and make sure that's not ticked in OE and then remove it from being your default instant messenger (AIM preferences)

The best way I've seen to disable windows messenger is to rename the folder. c:\program files\messenger to something like: c:\program files\messenger sucks

It will never fire back up after that.

Oh, and that service that ken mentioned: true, it's not related to windows messenger, but its a good one to disable anyway. Spammers have found a way to use this to carry out their nefarious biddings. Also it serves no purpose for the home user. So kill it.

I dont' use OE, but there is an option somewhere to not start MSN messenger with it.

In outlook go to Tools > Options, then the Other tab. The bottom option says "enable instant messaging in Microsoft Outlook", maybe its similar in OE
