This might be a dumb question, but who knows. I am now running Windows 2000 Pro. I am thinking about changing to XP. Would XP fuction properly on a 28k dial-up?

Should work perfect without any issues. But why are you using a 28.8modem? No faster connection avalable?

Youll be fine, heres an idea :]

grab 2 cell phones and add a phone line to each one, buy 2 telephone lines and use both cell phones and split the connection (guessing cell phones are at least 28k) this would probably create your own 56k :black

you know you want it.

If your PC Processor have less than 500Mhz with 64MB memory and 10MB disk scace then stick with Windows 2000. Modem 56k are very cheap. Why don't you change your modem card instead. :sw

This site has a pretty good XP readyness test, but I have never used it with dial up, so it might take hella long.

I had the same thing when a few years back. I ended up getting a IDSL account from Speakeasy.net. it worked untill broadband came about there.

. xp home edition with 256mb of ram, a fast cpu unit and a good 56k modem with a tested and cleaned separate phone line is very cool.

The best advice I can give when going to XP is making sure you have the correct drivers available.

No. But you can run a pre-install "test" (from the XP CD) to find out which things are going to be problems, and then search Google to get the drivers.

Btw, answer that question I asked in the PM. Maybe you need my help with that part. ;)

One thing to keep in mind is the updates and drivers size. Xp ships with drivers that are up to 2 years old. Yes they work but they aren't complete or current.

Sp1 is like 130 megs x 28.8 = Hella long time!

ATI Cats or NVidia DET drivers= 15 megs x 28.8 = still a long time

DX9, WMP, etc.

Anything else I may have forgotten = still takes time.

Before you launch this effort you may want to work with one of us on DSL to get and burn you a cd of the latest stuff we can find for your system, BEFORE you jump into it! Last time I did an Xp install it took a more than an hour at DSL speeds to update, mainly from the installations of MS security updates that require a restart in between each install.

HA! I know exactly what you mean. I seem to recall you saying at some point that your ISP was meer.net which is also the ISP that I use. I too have a 56k modem, and am currenty logged onto meer at a blazing 24k. That's about as good as it gets, and many times it is less than that. I may have to break down and get satellite eventually. I also lose my connection almost immediately if there is any lightning in the area. It doesn't have to even be close. If it close enough to be visible at all, the connection is as good as gone. Do you get this as well?

Do you get this as well? No, lightning is not a problem. The connection is very stable, just real slow. If it's not to much to ask, where do you live? I thought meer.net was local. Is your phone co. Frontier Communications? It's a pretty shabby outfit.

Well, if you look around on meer's homepage, it says they service the San Francisco Bay area, and Elkins, WV which strikes me as somewhat odd, but, like you, I am in WV. I'll be as specific as southern Randolph County. I do pass through Durbin every now and then. I live well off of any paved road, and the phone lines are buried down the road I live. The phones go out at least once every six months because the Department of Highways has cut the line while doing road work. It's hard to tell how many times it's been spliced. I think that is a big part of the problem, and, yes, our phone company is Frontier.

I am originally from Pittsburgh, but it is so much nicer here. I'll never go back. Moved here about 3 years ago. I plan to be here for the rest of my life. WV is a beautiful state!

Yea, it's great here. I've been here my whole life, and don't intent to ever move away. I've visited many places, but never had a desire to move to any of them.
