heres the deal on mp3 viruses--if you play mp3s on realone or wmp, the mp3 can contain links to webpages--these webpages can sock you with a hostile script etc..

the mp3 doesn't have the virus, only a link--if you use winamp, there is no problem at all

If you download an .mp3 file, and it has a VBscript icon, DO NOT CLICK on it!!! Right click on it, and open it in notepad, to see that it is a virus called the plan colombia virus. Delete this file. If you have clicked on it, you must remove linux.vbs and reload.vbs files from your machine, or the virus will reload every time you restart your computer. Also, every .vbs file on your computer contains a copy of the virus, delete them all. It makes copies of all .jpg files with .vbs extensions, and places copies of the virus in them. It is essentially the same as the loveletter virus. I think some record company may have planted this virus to cause problems with file sharing. Beware!!

.vbs files are old news--that was the "I Love You" virus--make sure your computer is set up to show all extensions in control panel/folder options/view/uncheck "hide known file types" box, otherwise this one can get you

from what i understand of the subject, there are no "mp3 viruses" (as in opening a certain mp3 will give you a virus every single time with every single player), there are just flaws in the player. and i quote from zdnet,

"A bug in the code of WinAmp 2.79 allows a specially formed data tag in an MP3 file to cause a buffer overrun in the application, which could be exploited to run any piece of code the attacker wishes"

Be careful in Windows for files that have more than one extension, thats the number one trick of viruses is most people have an option turned off in Windows Explorer to hide extensions. So, when you get a file thats song.mp3 - its actually song.mp3.vbs or song.mp3.exe and you don't see the last part of it, because you have that feature turned off. To turn it on, do this:

Open Windows Explorer, and go to Tools and Folder Options, go to the View tab, and in the radio buttons uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types"

Also, AnalogX makes a program called Script Defender that blocks out bad file types that can be potential viruses. You can download it here:

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/sdefend.htm

Secondly, GET A VIRUS SCANNER

If you're too cheap to buy one, you can download AVG for free at http://www.grisoft.com/
Free updates too!

Cool, thanks for the info guys!!! Up above some of you mentioned that in Windows sometimes all the extensions might not be showing up...(son.mp3.vbs..etc)...Does anyone know how to turn this feature on, on a MAC?? That would be great.

That bug in winamp had to do with it's mini-browser, and they fixed it btw.
