Hacking week on "The Screen Savers" has made me a paranoid woman. But I've found a lovely little piece of free software that helps me relax. It's called WinPatrol.

WinPatrol sniffs out worms, adware, spyware, cookies, trojan horses, and other yucky crap that might make its way into your system without your knowledge or consent. Here are its best features:

Approve/Deny programs set to AutoRun in Startup
Display additional info about programs you don't automatically recognize
Manage cookies, kill cookies, read more about your cookies, and automatically reject cookies
Get ownership info on domain names and all available Whois servers
Customize WinPatrol's Scottie Dog to check your system every day
And a bonus for those of you who saw what happened to Madonna: Detect when your homepage is hijacked (OK, so it's for your browser, but you get the picture.)

This program rules. If you're paranoid about unwanted, malicious programs on your system, WinPatrol keeps things in check for you.

Oh, and Scottie the dog barks when you launch WinPatrol. I like that.

Now sleep soundly, my darlings.

Sarah
