Hey all,
Its a sad day today for filesharing in Belgium.
A girl was sued for sharing a song on kazaa that she had downloaded legally through drm. Because she had downloaded it through drm, they were able to track her or something. I guess the authorities are too stupid to think of Ip adresses.
What bothers me the most about this lawsuit is that the girl actually downloaded the song legally, and then got sued. Thats just too harsh.
This is the first lawsuit about filesharing in Belgium that I know of.
I hope that not many will follow...

The problem arises where she shared the song. Unfortunately, being a leech is OK, but sharing isn't.

I believe it was for sharing the songs afterwards, not for downloading.

She downloaded through drm? Is that some sort of site? Or do you mean she shared a DRM-protected file, which would not play for anyone else without a valid license.
Got a link to the story?

She first downloaded a song legally through some site.
The song had drm on it.
She shared the song on kazaa
she got sued by the Belgian copyright organisation I guess, dunno what it is.
So instead of sueing people that download 100% illegal, she downloaded legal, but just shared it afterwards...
I don't have a link to a story, it was just on the Belgian news (getting sued for filesharing is still big news here)

Its a 16 year old girl who downloaded a song legally. And then shared it. The record company had put an unique "watermark" in each file that was downloaded. And so they managed to trace the girl.
The record company isn't going to sue the girl.
they only warned her.
here the source (in dutch)

Anyone who 'pays' for copy protected DRM fingerprinted crap and then shares it on Kazaa is an idiot and deserves to get caught.

Thats true...
And we already pay extra taxes on blank cd's. So I figure its ok to download. As far as I'm concerned they made it legal.

Is this the same DRM that you speak of as that one, which I just found in one of those hidden files?

if she lives in belgium you think she still eats belgium waffles? I think that in near future more and more mp3s are going to have a fingerprint of the housenumber of where the file went to. I hate drm... I downloaded a file through a group websight that had it, said my Microsoft player needed to upgrade the drm something of another.. I click no and deleted it.

So is WMP ratting you out, or isn't it?

Yeah, but I mean that most people download and share from p2p. She 'bought' the music and shared. So you could consider her 'less illegal'.

A little something about Media Player.
Its happened to me only 2 times, I think when I set up windows or something for the first time.
There is an option, where Media Player tries to see if you have obtained a license for the song.
Yeah sure, check to see if theres a license for the song so you can then be sued by the RIAA.
Why anyone would ever keep that box checked is beyond me.
I guess they hope people dont notice it.

You know what... It got me thinking...
What if RIAA purchased all of the right to WMplayer. They got money, they could do it. So now, they are using it to spy on people.
Now, this is rather far fetched but... I was wondering, what could motivate someone, that has released this last virus, that was designed to attack "Microsoft".
So now I'm thinking, what if some hacker got all pissed, and said..."Hey microsoft" you wanted to sell us out... heres your "reward""...
it's possible right?
