I use my Mcaffe firewall to filter my outgoin and incomming. I use Ad-Aware and SpyBot. And i use window washer to cover my tracks every night.
But for some freaken reason i keep getting hit by ads saying iam open to IM attacks that are a part of XP. Then they list a web site where i can go buy some freaken product to stop this.......
I dont want to buy anything _ but why am i getting hit by IMs that advertise this crap ??? anyone else having this problem or atleast how can i stop them ?

Yea, Messenger service is a pain if you are not firewalled, why in the heck did they even include that in XP Home? I can see it's use only on servers and on XP in the enterprise, but home edition?

Yes, I see no reason why Microsoft ever implemented that damn messenger service very annoying if you dont know how to get rid of it.
I mean unless your a administrator and need to send messages over your companies network to someone it is very lame.
I sometimes use it at LAN parties to piss off my friends when they are playing games, funny to watch their games minimize and have one of my false advertisements and joke messages pop up.
Other than that, its lame.

You're exactly right, they had to be smoking crack when they decided to make the Messenger service automatically start by default. In both Pro and Home editions! (I could almost see it being used in the Pro version, but home?!?!)
I've been at friends' houses before and watched them use their computers. I've seen literally 10 Messenger SPAMs within 2 minutes. One guy was seriously ready to throw his computer out the window. I showed him how to remove the service and his ulcers went away! :upside

ok check this out, MSN6 messanger and Messanger Service are to diffrent things,
MSN messanger is a IM ( instant message service) and messanger service is a pro for networked computer to talk to each other.
somone found a way to send adds using this messanger service, how I turned it off was by right click " my computer" / manage/ services and apps/ services, then go down to messanger/ then right click and stop/ then right click messanger again and go to properties& start-up type = disable
no more pop-ups
I had this problem, like 6 mounths ago, guess it only happens once you do a fresh instal of XP, Google.com can take you a long way
also buy shuting off Messanger Service, it can cause problems with AVG anti-virus, so says a page I found using Google, wish I remember the page but tht was 6 mounths ago.
also its not a firewall problem tht can make you get the adds, its a hole that microsoft made (hope by mistake) that once you get on the web your open to these add, even if your hardware & software firewall'd

basiclly XP home and XP professional are the same thing, just that some features were disabled, but the IM service was not deleted. :goodjob :goodjob :goodjob :goodjob

MS probably just didn't predict that when XP was rolled out to consumers that spammers would start bulk advertising with that primitive messenger service. Big surprise there, they didn't think ahead.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't SP1 disable it for you on Home Edition?
