RIAA To Sue Radio Listeners For Copyright Infringement

NewsHax wire -- In a hastily organized press conference this afternoon, the Recording Industry Association of America announced plans to issue 500,000 subpoenas to combat what it calls "the largest group of copyright infringers in the world": radio listeners.

A spokesperson for the RIAA said that it could no longer overlook the sheer numbers of people who listen to music without paying for it, and that the first round of subpoenas would target "the most egregious offenders". Experts call this one of the largest legal actions ever undertaken by one entity in this country. (more...)

The Association's legal strategy is to subpoena two or three persons who have witnessed the defendants engaged in the act of listening to the radio, and to use their depositions to attempt to recover some of the billions of dollars that the RIAA says is lost every year when these "scofflaws", as the Association calls them, blatantly steal music.

The president of the RIAA, I. Screwem, recently said in an interview with Rolling Stone, "If you look at it, the cost is staggering. Look at how many times some songs are played on Top 40 radio during one average day. Each time one of these people steals a listen, it costs us something like $3.00 in lost revenue from CD sales. This has to stop." The first cases could come to trial this winter, barring any unforeseen legal challeges.

Well, I guess I'm safe from that one. There aren't very many radio stations here anyway. The stations that there are play mostly country music. Which I can't stand. One reason why I d/l music. btw Funny story.

Update:

The Queen of England has had enough of people using the English language in vain and using it in conjunction with stupidity such as the link above, and has included clauses of the Crown Act 2003 where people can now be sent to prison for infringing on the English language, irrespective of their residence. She plans to put the RIAA behind bars in England with all the burglars and anyone else :p

*intended as a joke*

I think a lot of people miss the point when it comes to why the RIAA is so terrified of file sharing, when studies (some on this site) show that record sales are going up. Why spend all this money to combat p2p when it's not even making a huge impact on profits?

They're not upset that people are downloading songs from their cash cows Brittney and Eminem, it's because we're NOT downloading their songs. p2p evens the playing field. They control radio, MTV, distribution at retail outlets, and advertising and publicity. They music we used to hear were the ones they wanted us to hear. And who's gonna spend $15 (at the time) on a CD from a band they've never heard of?

But now there's no risk to try new things, and explore what's really out there. AudioGalaxy was the first time you could really find anything you wanted. I've got a modest 10 gigs of music on my system, and none of them are from bands I ever would have heard of or payed attention to before file sharing. And I still buy stuff that I think is worthy of buying -- but usually not from mainstream labels or artists. And that's the problem -- the RIAA is losing their control and the money's getting redistributed to the smaller and indie labels.

Meanwhile if I actually heard half the stuff I listen to -on the radio-, I'd prolly lose control of my car and hit a phone pole in shock.

We hear you, BooYaKaSha113. That's what I used AG for except for metal artists like Gamma Ray, Nightwish and Freedom Call etc.

Excellent link, Pebbles100.This was a great and very funny article. As ridiculous as this seems, you never know.Someone in the RIAA may already be preparing the subpoenas. Everyone watch out . They will be after our VCR's Next . i don't care what anyone says though. They take my collection of Buffy the Vampire tapes over my dead body.Death to the RIAA. Terminate them.

Yup, we're all criminals now... I guess all people in etire world should be locked up. They should turn our homes into prison cells so they can put us all somewhere. Hmmm maybe they gonna damge our ears so we'll be deaff, hence we won't be able to listen to any music...
Yup... it looks like that what their plans are...:bk

I say "KILL THEM ALL, LET GOD SORT THEM OUT"

mmm good bump ajm :þ

p2p is like radio in that Elvis really lost out on all that money he would have made if we had never heard him. Don't let this happen again! Keep people from hearing Eminem and Britney, so they can make as much money as they really deserve.

:mellow

Considering that after we pay for a CD they can tell us what we can and can't do, what's to stop them from going forward with this in the future except a PR nighmare. Legally there is nothing holding them back from going forward with a claim like this and all of you would be guilty of illegal acts. It's really isn't a joke when you think about it.

The RIAA & the MPAA are going to turn the music and movie world against them. Well I won't buy any CD's. They screw you over that way too.

First they will release all murderrers, rapists and child molesters to make some room in prisons to lock up all of those "terrible, bad filesharers"...

Don't worry though... it's just a begining... IT WILL GET WORSE!!!:cross
