Good evening I am having a little windows trouble. I am attemtping to archive my CDROMs on to DVD-Rs. I am reading my CDs on to the hardrive and that's where my problem is. Some of my discs that I had burned in the past are hanging when I copy them and then it tells me it can't read from the specified device. I can access and play the files on the discs but it won't copy or move itself. I am running WINME and most of the files are setup as read only on the CDs but I don't know if that makes a differance. If anyone has any ideas I would much appreciate it.

Are you trying to create images of the cdroms or just copy the data off onto a dvdr? If you are trying to make an image they have to be pretty clean because it has to read some extended cd info however for you to just read the data they can be pretty dirty.

I've had this problem before, usually because of a scratched disc. I had a CD-R full of mp3s and wanted to copy them to a h/d but I was having problems with some of the tracks, they simply coundn't be read.

Another problem was when copying a Divx file (700MB) to a h/d using an old CR-ROM drive (16X). After about 5mins the CD-ROM drive would stop spinning and the file could no longer be read to copy to the h/d. I tried it on a faster CD drive and it worked.

I tried other drives on some other computers and I'm getting the samething. I'm not trying to image them but then that failed too when I tried in desperation. The CDROMs are in good shape with no scuffs at all. Every drive I tried to copy to hardrive with just sits. I can play the file on the disc and there's no problem. Apparently it copy protected itself and I can't find the little tab to cover up and copy it. Oh well just have to take good care of the copies I have. Anyone elses ideas are welcome though cause I would like to solve this mystery.

If you have 2 drives you can dup all of the cd's so you can put the backups in the closet.
