You need to go to blackviper site to find some services not required for your tasks while on your computer, it will help to reduce heavy load.
Also remember to run defrag once in a while!

I also heard there was a worm virus going around that causes this to happen. And I don't mean the Blaster worm. I think it was called, Welchia, but I'm not certain.

Quote from microsoft "STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1. "
So no I doubt this is it since he said he had SP1 already.
Wanked, most likely you have some spyware or a corupt proggy running that won't shut down and is causing your box to hang. I would recommend that if you have not already done this try running ad-subtract, ad-aware( http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) and see if you have something running below ground. Just google spyware and you'll find these programs or start with the link above. Keep us posted.

Also check out this thread. Look for Greylin's post he incudes a link to Spybot that I forgot to put in. I would try both Spybot and Ad-aware as they sometimes catch different stuff.
