View Full Version : Where can I buy used CDs?

I've decided I will never buy another RIAA CD.

So the question is, where can boycotter like myself legally purchase used CDs?

I'd like the RIAA to not get a penny from me, or at least give them the least amount possible.

Does anyone know of some sites where I can buy used CDs instead of new? Ebay? Amazon? What?

Perhaps if we all buy used CDs, and then sell them back to the community, we can share music without breaking the law.

Another good source of used CDs is yard sales. Scan the list of yard sales in your local paper to see if any mention CDs......I've found some great bargains that way.

Can I be sure that the RIAA doesnt get a cut in these used CD sales? or as small of a cut as possible?

Most music stores have a great selection of used CD's for sale in which the RIAA will not see a dime of, except for the initial purchase of course. As Shawners pointed out Wherehouse, Virgin, or Tower Records are all good bets.

Of course you could spend $7.00 and up for a used CD or you could do the sensible thing and buy a CD burner for $35 and some CD-R's. Oh and that wasn't a typo.. Good old FRY's Electronics.... $35 CD-R drive.

I don't know of a record store around here that doesn't carry used CD's. Price range 5-9 bucks; not too bad. It's a better deal than buying online used, because by the time you get done paying for shipping the price is up there again like a brand new RIAA CD.

Of course, I would rather give my money to UPS or FedEx than those duplicitous liars at the RIAA, though the money staying in my pocket is even better.

someone neeeds to make a P2P service which allows users to sell used cds to each other, if I could buy from people in the same state as me and I could find those people online, there would be no problem.

Ebay and Amazon seem to be decent so far at selling used products.

I hope everyone starts buying used CDs, we need to spread the word so the RIAA doesnt get a dime. Everyone who sells their used CD can just make a copy on a CD-R and keep that.

This is as close as I can get to renting CDs.

They don't get any cut at this time. I spoke in length to the manager of the local Wherehouse and he said "no way" they get dick. The RIAA bitched big time and even boycotted a few stores when they started selling used, but they gave up. Interesting thing though he said depending on where the store is located the % of total sales vs % of used sales ranges from 6-25%. So this might help account for some signifcant % of those lost sales. I for one haven't bought new for over a year.

The wherehouse's used section is alright, you might be able to find rarities. I got the Stone Roses single for Love Spreads really cheap too. Not bad for a single not released commercially here. But its a chancey thing, some days you might find something you really like and other days nothing.

If you have a Half Price Books (west coast chain) near you check out thier disc collection. To my knowledge, they carry no new discs, other than box sets (well the store where I live anyway) and the selection, though small, is worth going through. They also carry used vinyls and casettes I think.

If you live near a university, look up record stores in a phonebook. most likely they'll carry used.

Or try your local library. Check out CD's, burn them and return them! And its all free!
