Intriguing Linux study

Siemens Business Systems recently conduced a study about desktop Linux use. The results are quite astonishing. It was estimated that by 2008, Linux will have a desktop share of 20%.

And they're going to quit taxing us too. why the sarcasm? i personally dont find it that unbeleivable. consider where linux was 5 years ago. 1998. how many people can actually say they used linux as their every day OS back then??? very few other than a few far and few between enthusiasts. now look at it. its popularity, and ease of use have grown exponentially. so whats to stop that from happening in the next 5 years?

microsoft will create a proprietary version of unix that essentially IS linux, only with some bells and whistles and a new version of the user application error / general protection fault / illegal activity detected system currently referred to as "Sussex" but to be eventually titled unauthorized activity failed (or similar) this will run inside windows / os and essentially serve as a multitasking tool, with an extra interface modeled after popular memory-management packages

also the ice age and global warming are cancelling each other out, isn't it splendid how things fall together, nature is a mother

I think it really could happen. At the hospital I work at we're looking at switching over to linux clients at nursing stations. The main reasons are security and cost. The cost of an enterprise version of the OS is alot lower and we won't have to upgrade the PCs we have that are <200 MHZ to get the system to run well. Linux also provides greater options to lock-down the workstations, and that will save money in licenses for the lockdown program we use. Linux has grown immensely considering how new it is and that it doesn't have the marketing forces behind it that windows has.

microsoft will stop at all to stop linux, its a threat and they will close it.. I believe they will lobby all the software companies to keep them to make programs for their windows.. LINUX big thing their suffering from is lack of third party.. BUt i say why cant they make a windows platform into linux to run games through or apps..

I believe Linux will definately take a big upswing in usage. The united Linux effort is coming along nicely and in 5 years, there will be most businesses running Linux atleast because of reasons in previous posts. Also WINE is coming along nicely and frankly Longhorn doesn't look that impressive, it's pretty much like XP is now. So, being that Linux is so stable and stuff...
