Hi! I've got a pretty fast internet connection where I work (at a University), and was thinking about doing some p2p downloading from there, as I don't have access to a fast connection at home. Don't know if this is a stupid question or not, but I wondering if anyone at the university would be able to see what and when I download stuff, etc. Basically just wondering who could see if I was downloading and what info they'd get. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Yes I do believe they can see what your downloading. But I think they only care about the copyrighted stuff such as music,/new movies and such. I know my interent can see what I download, I got an e-mail warning one time not to share copyrighted stuff.

But anyways give it a shot I would say, and see if you get talked to about it. Or maybe even talk to someone you can trust at the university and see what they say. But I'm almost + they can see what you download. LoL and if it's other stuff besides music/new released videos, I'm sure they not going to care and look for naughty stuff people are downloading. LoL just kidding

ES5 has SSL encryption so they wouldn't see what you were downloading. Unfortunately it's a piece of shit so theres probably not much you can do as most of the good P2P programs don't have SSL.

You didn't get a message from your ISP because you were DOWNLOADING stuff. To see what you are downloading, they have to sniff the packets, which is a very time-consuming (read: expensive) process to do on any scale, and they have zero financial motivation to do so. It would cost them money and would never produce any -- a total loss.

Now, SHARING stuff, that's completely different. To see what you're letting others get FROM you all they have to do is be on the same file-sharing network and take a look.

So, you are probably totally safe downloading from your school, but don't let anyone download from YOU -- that is where you'd be likely to get in trouble.

they may not see what you are d/l but they will see you taking bandwith straight away and then the admin will be onto that straight away so be careful and check the terms of internet use as a lot of places are paranoid about getting sued

I don't have broadband at home either. It's not even avaiable where I live. But I d/l and share just fine. It just takes a little longer. All that it takes is patience. Try setting up your downloads at bedtime. They should be done when you get up in the morning.:wings

No offense to 56k users, but I think they should have an efficient file sharing program that only allows Broaband and high speed connections. On a network like Kazaa there may be 100 users, and when you leave your comp idle it won't search for the faster user, it will just download from the slower one.

Well that's not fair, I like the idea, but 56Kers contribute to p2p too. I found a rare song, only 1 user had it, and he had 56K. Most 56k people don't dare to share. I think anetwork for only broadband would be tight, but can they configure the programs to detect your speed, what if your collection is slow that day/

I have 1 meg broadband and I'm on DC++ at the moment, there was a rare new album I was after, the only person I could find with it was on 56k.

I appreciate the fact he is sharing. Its been downloading for 2 hours now. This also gives others the chance to max out my upload.
