I'd like to hear opinions on which codec pack is better and why?

Why ask Why?

Get both of them, look at what they have, try installing them and see what success you have.

You dont need 1/2 of either of them

If there shoudl be a codec discussion, it should be about WHAT you do need in each of them, and what NOT to install.

i.e. use the direct show filters, or, use the FFDShow Alpha instead?

I haven't seen the Nimo codec pack in a while, but from I remember, it had a lot more comprehensive collection, which means that it had a lot more codecs you wouldn't need, as Krell pointed out. For the average user, Kazaalite codec pack is plenty.
