I know everybody will say that thet use Ad-Aware which almost becoming the standard. But I just wanted to see what other programs people use to remove spyware/adware from their computers. Also tell me what programs/ways you use to prevent it like a host file for example.

adaware is good. suggestion, use a firewall, and make sure you set it up, so if any type of program wants to access the net, you set the proper permissions for it. *adaware* along with a good firewall, can prevent, some tracking also.

The latest PC World compared the popular programs and AD-Aware came out on top. Its an excellent program, a must have!

ok here is a weird one. i use adaware and have for over a year. I had a crash about 8 months ago and rebuilt my system from a fresh boot. I did not have a copy of adaware saved so I d/l and installed it fresh. After about two months I went to do my normal run to see if anything unwanted was on my system and adawair had morphed into it's german version. Same program and runs well but everything is in german. I have yet to change it back but have no idea how this happened.
I also use a little program called internet cleanup to clear history, catch and cookies. It has found some active X programs that adaware has not found. It costs about $20 and does not do much that you can not do through internet properties settings but it is easier to use. I also use zonealarm that seems to keep most of the nasty stuff out.

For protection I have that cexx.org dummy DLL, the latest Ad-Aware, the latest Norton AntiVirus, and I also restrict certain cookies with IE's built-in P3P cookie protection. I don't have a firewall although I use Windows' internal firewall whenever I need to.

i recently uninstalled ad-aware, its not that the program is bad in any way, but its slower for me than spybot
spybot also clears tracking cookies (porn sites keep getting my yahoo sn, so i get porn messages constantly, this stopped new ones...), i run it every night, i also like the registry fixer, worked wonders, and its updated more than ad aware
so why do you guys like adaware so much more, have you even tried spybot?
get it at http:\\security.kolla.de and try it, if you still hate it, pm me and tell me why, i dont see a single prob with it
also, evilmegaman, spybot only deletes files YOU SELECT!! so dont select those files, its that easy, it also gives you a warning, telling you that some files may be needed by other programs, wich adaware doesnt, it just asks to delete them
SPYBOT ALL THE WAY BABY!!

I TESTED AN UPDATED AD-AWARE VS. AN UPDATED SPYBOT. I RAN AD-AWARE AND FOUND 14 ENTRIES(12 COOKIES AND 2 TEMP INTERNET FILES); I DID NOT REMOVE THEM BECAUSE I WANTED TO SEE IF SPYBOT WOULD ALSO FIND THOSE ENTRIES. TO MY SURPRISE, I FOUND 97 ENTRIES USING SPYBOT, WHICH IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT BEING THAT SOME OF THE SPYBOT ENTRIES WERE FOR MULTIPLE FILES. I REMOVED AD-AWARE, AFTER USING IT FOR OVER A YEAR, AND WILL USE SPYBOT INSTEAD

THAT IS REALLY COOL AND ALL BUT I THINK YOU REALLY NEED TO CUT DOWN ON THE CAPITALS AND USE MORE PERIODS BECAUSE IT REALLY MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT AND STUFF AND OH YEAH AD-AWARE KICKS ASS AND SO DOES SPYBOT.
Thank you and good night.
