Sygate is the firewall for all, there is no dealing with opening ports and shit like that just allow or deny connection from a client.

Sygate, I personally found, is too hard to figure out. I've found that ZoneAlarm is much more user-friendly. But that's just me. That's just me...Oh, and I'm sure that this is true for any of them, but one of the main reasons I like like ZA...I "borrowed" it...for FREE!

its got that built in ad blocker and all that... but I remember reading that it does not block nonwinsock packets and was demonstratably vulnerable to this type of attack, it was shut down and made to appear to be still running.... I do not know if this has been remedied in the latest version and dont remember where I found the exploit.... It is 3 in the morning now so I will look for it tomorrow and post if I find it.
So, right now I run kerio, it seems like a pretty damn good firewall to me, though it is a little more difficult. Ive head sygate is real good too

but this is an interesting little proggie too. it doesnt use non winsock packets to bypass the firewall, instead its a program that runs from within the memory space allocated to the firewall and does not show up as a seperate process. so be careful who has access to your machine!

I prefer Sygate Personal Firewall PRO. Tried before the following programs:

Norton Internet Security - reccomended only for internet morons that can't set up the rules by themselves. Setting it up as YOU want would take a lot of effort to avoid smashing the computer into the wall.

Tiny Personal Firewall - had issueas when I changed a network card in my box (no more protection for ya). Other then that, version 2 was good. Version 3 merged with Trojan Trap, antivirus and other crap. The mutant that appeared can't do any of these tsks well.

Outpost - not bad really, but had stability issues, too. I also like Sygate's rules a bit more (don't tell me about ad blocking or script filtering, the firs thing is done better with specialized software and the second would be accomplished if you drop IE and switch to alternative browser.

BlackICE - thinks it is very smart, while in fact is dumb. No normal configuration for what you allow/don't allow.

ZoneAlarm - another lamer firewall.

Anyway, real men use iptables.

ZONE ALARM IS GAY!!! It actually slows down your internet connection and cause severe lag in online gaming.
BlackICE Defender is the best by far if ur not a newb.
If ur a newb who knows nothing about networking then ZoneAlarm is for you.
BlackICE is very easy to get also...... he he (file sharing)

I use the firewall on my NetGear Router.
That seems cover me better than a software one
It has cool little features like Port Scan and DOS Protection and it Disables Response to Ping on Internet WAN Port.
Fun stuff :)

I also use an IP filter (Proto Wall) to keep out unfriendlys. ;)
