How long is it before someone gains veterans rights

well, since most noobs lately are flaming noobs, or redundant news noobs, who go away after less than 30 posts, I'd have to say that after 40 posts and no threats of getting banned, you're not a noob.
(not to offend any noobs who haven't been annoying, its just that with the influx of RIAA action, you know, all sorts of geniuses are attracted to the forums.......)
and I have the pleasure to say that since you've been neither flaming, nor spitting out the same news, and you've been making decent posts, you deserve the rights.
firstly, start by changing your status. Surely you can think of something more creative than "Advanced BBS Member" :wings

I second that.
However there are some morons who NEVER get it and occasionally drop by to ask dumb questions. The RIAA stuff, wow, seen lots of characters in here thinking they can rile us up, but they're not "noobs" they're just Aholes who are too dumb to say anything interesting, so they just say something radical or inflammatory to exude the illusion of being intelligent. And then, well, you have the losers that get off on saying something bad in a forum, then watching the result, expecting to be banned. Those are the worst cuz you KNOW they have no lifes. Yes, more so than the 2000+ posters who arent mods :)

When they explore google before opening there mouths, that's usually good enough for me!
Other than that it depends on the knowledge aquired on a specific program/community/etc. so I'd say the duration of time someone is a n00b depends on their speed of learning and the complexity of what they're wanting to de-n00b themselves over. :;)

Just because someone posts 10 times a day for 10 days, doesnt make them NOT a n00b.
When it becomes obvious that you understand how the site works, and have gotten a feel for the people here, then you on your way. It doesnt hurt to make some positive contributions either.

noobs are noobs for a couple of months (at least) post numbers dont matter too much I'd say, as long as your logging in and rooting about often enough. I hate when noobs de-noob themselves by posting nonsense then bugger off, its kinda of a strange thing to do.
Yes I am a noob, and proud of it. :blah

As far as noobs go everyone here is a noob. Does not matter how many post you have under your belt. As long as their are lessons to learn your still a noob bottom line!.
So stop replying people ask stupid Questions with in reality there is no such thing as a stupid Question. Treat people the way you want to be treated.

It doesn't matter how many posts you have, it matters on your thinking capability on the subject of file sharing and the ideas that revolve around it. If you think KaZaA is the only good application for downloading, that is one way to tell if you are a noob (I hate using that term though).

When somebody just comes in to the forums and starts a thread for other reasons than just to introduce themselves or ask for help on something, that's usually not a good sign.
First spend alot of time reading, and respond to threads so people will begin to know you, and then you will know what an appropriate thread to start would be.

This is utter rubbish.
There is a definitive destinction regarding whether people are newbies or not, and YES, there really is such a thing as a stupid question. They run on the same level as your post.
When you spout off without knowing what your talking about YES, you definately have a few things to learn. If you jump in the middle of things without surveying your surroundings, you a n00b.
As notbob . . who is NOT a n00b pointed out, some people have 1,000 posts and still cant quite get the hang of it. Do they have "veterans rights"? Well, more than you people with 16 posts under your belt.
I dont care how long you say youve been lurking, or signed up, if you just show up once and a while to smart off, or make your statement, then you dont carry much weight here. Sorry, but the people who make intellegent posts and try to bring something to the table, supercede the lamers who have nothing more than "Down with the RIIA" or fart jokes. Really, if thats all you have to say, just dont say anything.
If you think that "everyone is equal", then be in for a rude awakening.

I just think it's a little sad that some people are so obsessed with status, hierarchy, and their own individual position within it. Surely it's possible to feel satisfied and emotionally secure without having to dump on someone who walked in the door 30 seconds after you did.
Some people have an acknowledged expertise and hence authority and are regular reliable advisors, mentors etc, it doesn't take too long to work out who they are or also that they are human too and not infallible.
Also worth bearing in mind is that although this is the filesharing forum and site in every way that matters, there are only a miniscule proportion of the worlds sharers here, a few thousand out of many millions. So you might feel like your'e some kind of God because your post count hits 10 or 100 or 1000 and you threw your newly acquired weight around or someone kissed up to you a little or you learnt all the jargon or whatever but actually there is a whole p2p world of filesharers that haven't heard of anyone here and somehow they still get by. Perspective.
You can be a filesharer a long time and still be a noob on a forum. It doesn't mean anything.

Well yeah it's kind what i mean, theres no such thing as veterans rights. But like it's some serious bullshit when you see a 1 post n00b trying to tell of a mod. Or if someone starts a new thread cussing out a mod, after he closes their previous thread. That's what i mean

In my opinion you are 100% correct, as it is not just the post count that makes someone not a noob, but being helpful when you can, friendly when you want to flame, and not posting just to see your name, but becoming a real member by reading, and trying to learn, and help. Although just having a bit of fun is not all bad.

Noob is a classification of someone who is new to something or in training for a better understanding about something...
In all technical aspects we are all noobs in some area's untill we understand the basic concepts of how stuff works on a certain subject.

I think that n00bs arre not made... they are born. Some people may have some initial uncertainty with the proper things to do, but they are not n00bs. There are also people that will always be n00bs.

You're a n00b as long as you think you're not. Once you realize that you aren't the best, that there is always someone who knows more, and that its best for you to just shut up and listen to those people, then you're not a n00b.

I think a n00b is anyone who joined after I did. Like wingnut2600 for example, who joined exactly 17 days after me. What a gormless n00b.

Hmmm, guess I'll have to ask CPU

I bet CJ was running either 98 or 98SE windows XP has got to be the most easiest OS to handle hands down...
But it is quite a bit differnt from 98 imho in quite a few ways.
But as I said easier to run and less errors and issues.

In my opinion, a noob is a noob until they learn how to search for an answer for their question before asking it. And if they have to ask the question, they ask it intelligently--providing details, and what they've thought/done about the problem.

Hmmm.... I think that is stupid... any thread that is started without searching is invaluable. I think that if it pops into some n00bs head to start a thread, there hasn't been one recently enough.
Or maybe I just like duplicated threads with the heckling and the obligatory linked dupe thread... great fun.

I agree all noob's never like to use the search function on the forum I dunno what it is but they dont understand that the answer to there question is sitting there and can be found way before it is answered and if not theres google.
But we have all had our days when we get lazy and dont feel like searching for jack crap and posting sounds soo much easier.
So... Not exactly the best definition I think ducttapebigsexy did a fine job at explaining the word noob and referencing. But if you were to say one did such a thing and was repetative in nature that person is in fact either a noob or is very lazy.
We are all new to something and there is always someone who will know a little bit more then the next guy. Thinking you know it all is quite a way to have that lable placed upon you.
cpugeniusmv by my classifaction is no noob and the proof can be found scattered throught the forums in many instances. Wingnut's demeaner and the way he speaks as wise though he dont get as technical as cpu may get I can pretty much safely say he is not a noob.
Now if we were to put these folks into some other thing like maybe playing some game or sales and marketing they may be new to it or a noob in that field. (Which may not be the case just for example purposes.)

LOL thats some funny shit man. You've been socking it to that little punk notbob real good lately.
Looks to me like you've got him on the run. Don't let him get one over on you...the loser probabaly thinks hes winning. Every time he sticks his beak in where its not wanted make sure the little bitch feels the cut of your gib.
