Maybe... but it will never return to it's former popularity.
I won't use it because I like the fast track network too much, especially being able to serach for videos and software...
But there are people who would return to it, just not many.

honestly no. I don't think after all it's been through it could survive in any incarnation. I haven't even heard much on it coming back in a while.

I don't think it will have a chance. If it comes back, you will only be able to share .nap files, and only non-copyrighted material.

Napster is a brandname and trademark in search of a marketing plan.
As a trademark it has value.
Like Xerox ..Kleenex.. Coke...etc.. it is recognizable and represents something to almost everyone , just by saying the name.
Will Napster ever go back to what it was? ..NO!
...but I'm sure bright marketing types are working the VCs day and night with plans to keep the Napster brand name alive. Napster could market music like a Starbucks markets coffee or partner with a variety of retailers to have a docking station/cafe...area ...for point of purchase downloadable music.
Some phone booth size area to look up what you want ...plug in your handheld musical transport unit...pay( like 3/1.00)...and leave...just like dropping off film ...or buying ice cream.
And that cute little cat logo watches over it all.
Heh .Heh

:devil Yup gotta admit with you Mike that the napster name will continue somewhere but the napster network is dead. What I'm wondering is where does this leave Shaun Fanning? Anyone have any idea what he's up to these days. I haven't heard much about him lately and was just kinda curious. I would kinda like to see hime get together with some of the original napster team and maybe develop a new network. I know it's not very damn likely to happen but hey with what he learned from napster he definitely has insight on how to keep such network from facing the same problems as napster. Oh well I guess I can dream huh?

If by "come back" you mean "pay service", no way. If it comes back as a P2P client owned by someone overseas or something and the RIAA can't shut them down which is very unlikely, they have a lot of catching up to do with other clients(decentralization, multisource, etc...). Chances for Napster come back are slim. Looks like RIP napster.

Do you think that there could ever be a napster lite witch would allow the sharing of MP3's or is it the server which would control the file types?

I couldn't give more then two shits about napster now...
I mean seriously.. WHO DOES CARE?
We know its not coming back as what it was before so there is no point in even discussing this...

Napster is dead.
Roxio bought it, but even they cannot bring it back to life. They will probably (and most likely ) turn into a *failed* pay service.
Peer to peer networking was all about basicly one service when Napster was in it's prime. There was no Kazaa, Piolet, Morpheus, and any other really popular P2P programs at the time.
It was a beautiful thing then. Napster has spawned an unstoppable age of public P2P file sharing networks.
Napster is dead. Let it's legacy rest in peace. :wings

Hey, Napster still has a chance! You can still use napigator and the old client to download off of openNap clients (without resume of course). NAPSTER WILL ALWAYS LIVE!
That doesn't mean that Napster sucks in comparison to new progs...
If something should live, it is Audiogalaxy... now that was sweet!

Actually, some of the older versions of Napster (that can still be used with Napigator) support resume.

well, with the way things r going, none of the present p2p apps will ever be the same.
if and when downloading music becomes the norm (i guess in a legitimate way...meaning paying)........Napster could then hop into the game.
i mean if were going to pay...why not pay with them as well?
hmm.
i understand that we have all gotten used to our fav apps, but when it comes down to it.......when we're all paying.....it will be the best app who will win and maybe Napster will have something to go with.
just a dream, i suppose.
and just looking at that screenshot makes me a bit nostalgic.
oh, well.

Well, it's currently owned by Roxio. Sooner or later, it'll be sold to a record-label, who will develop a program called "Napster" that allows users to download music from that label (or others at a price to said labels) for either a subscription fee with a limited number of tracks, or a "Pay-as-you-Download" service.

It'll live on in our hearts forever, I know I'll never forget it. For the first time in my life I started to enjoy music. Before that, I thought that listening to music was just some cliche. I was 14 at the time.
