Can anyone tell me if the WASTE filesharing app runs on win 98? Im sure were doing all the key generating correctly but we cant connect to the each other. We get the brief connecting flash and then nothing. But the user name and public keys are being displayed properly on the preferences page...

oh...and theres no names in the buddys list.is that right ?...thanks:mellow

I've read statements saying waste should work with firewalls, but in fact it has trouble with firewalls from what I have seen. Try disabling your firewall and see if you can get a connection.

I have connected with and without my firewall and I would say it is a bug in waste as there is no rhyme or reason as far as I can se for connecting with or without firewall.
I mean in other words it sometimes works with my firewall on and sometimes does not.

For two waste nodes to connect they both have to have imprted each others public keys.

At least one end will have to allow incoming connections to the waste port which means configuring your firewall or connection share/NAT router , if you have them.

Nobody in the buddy list means you havn't managed to connect to anyone else to become part of a network.

Thank's for your help but still no joy. Weve got the names and keys in autherized public keys but no names in the buddys list and no connections.....although there jsut being entered by copying and pasting from IM messages. Could this be reformating the keys some how and ruining them?

probably not but its getting irritating now

first yes you both need each others pub key.
you have to import them from a .txt file which you save the keys to.

second you have to connect to the other persons ip.
firewall or no firewall it will connect you, reason being that data is routed by default.

i myself have tested it with 2 passive users and yes it does go through, although i have seen transfers use a bridge between the 2, the bridge being a non-firewalled user. i have not tested it with just 2 passive and no one else.
firewalls such as zonealram or sygate ect. which ask permission for apps to use internet do NOT make you passive so dont worry if you have that kind

just make sure you copy the key properly and save it to a .txt file and import it, connect to the other persons ip
on the connect window enter the persons ip such as
123.456.789:1337
123.456.789 <-- being the ip
1337 <-- being the designated port
have the other person(s) do the same but with your ip and you should be set and ready to go

This is driving me nuts. First my little prob with blubster and piolet (ughhhh) now this.
OK my friend and I hooked everything up right (to my knowledge ) followed all the instructions. We exchanged and imported keyz (thru email by copy and paste, could this be it???). I plugged in my friends IP (we even tried it the other way around). I port forwarded 1337 (thru UPnP as well). I'm running a linksys router and norton internet security , I alowed full access, and he's only running zonealarm, he's setup the prog for server status). still can't connect??????????
If neone can help it would be much appreciated. Or maybe someone can suggest another prog for this kind of p2p? Is foldershare any good it looks like you upload an index of the files you want to share to a server tho and I'm a little uneasy about that (can someone put my mind at ease or is it bad idea).

Always break things down to the least common denominator, and eleminate the middle stuff.

With no firewalls, and I mean NO firewalls, check to see if the Internet Connection Firewall is enabled w/o your knoweldge, try to connect.

If you can get a connection, then add one thing back at a time.

Alright I bypassed my router and both of our firewalls are disabled. After doing this I restarted waste but still it tries to connect for a minute than his rating drops to 0 and no connection. should we just uninstall the firewalls. I figured disabling would be enough. Both of our xp default firewalls are also disabled.

hmm..this is probabably little or no use to you but i fixed that problem by ignoring most of the written guides you'll find out there and just adding the IP (with no port numbers) straight into where you might think the others persons file name should go in the connect screen. Although not using the key name as probably ruined all the security features, after a few hours of that thing I sort of stoped caring. Good luck anyway:;)

That's one of the one fun things with waste. You don't add the IP addy where it clearly says "IP Addresses". You add it through network status.
