Moonman has a FAQ for IRC. I'm sure it's stickied or something. But make no mistake, IRC isn't as simple as search and download like Kazaa. Although there are some clients that try to make it that way, I haven't really used them too much.
IRC is a totally different world. I seriously wonder if half the people in there are human.

irc is a bit more complex takes about 2 hours or so to grasp the basic concepts but its well worth sticking with i have tried a few progs bittorent emule dcc winmx etc but nothing seems to come near irc for speed of transfer , content tends to be newer stuff but there are plenty of specialist channels hey if its not online u may even find someone who will serve it just for u irc is a big resource and well worth adding to your resources
as to a guide www.slyck.com has a nice guide to get you going
i have yet to d/l a fake file on IRC

IRC is a gold mine if you know where to look. Go read the Slyck Guide to IRC here. (http://www.slyck.com/irc.php)
Also, check out IRCSpy's Guides aswell here. (http://www.ircspy.com/guides.asp)
Use www.ircspy.com with your IRC client because IRCSpy lets you search and tells you the location of the file/s you want.

IRC is really the only source needed sometimes, especially if you consider that the vast majority of those 192Kbps CBR files come straight from it (or even "indirectly"). Stick with it and you'll be rewarded sooner or later.
