Hi everyone, I need some help in deleting the index.dat. I'm running windows2000 professional edition. Does anyone know of a good freeware program for deleting the index.dat file, I used to use PurgeIE, but my trial is up, and I dont want to pay the $30.00.

I have a simple script that will do it, and delete other temp files where you provide the past.

When I'm on that machine I can PM it to you.

As I said, I'm not advertising linux here. I'm just giving you a free way to get rid of those index.dat files.

If you use a Knoppix cd to boot into a linux desktop from just the cd, you can just mount your windows partition. From there you can just browse over to the directories and delete the index.dat files. It's only windows explorer that can't display them because of another fancy file in the same directory that makes explorer notice it.

In fact, inside knoppix you can just do a file search and it will show you where all your index.dat files are located.

Once you're done, you can just reboot and take out the knoppix cd.

Now, I suppose I can't promise that windows is gonna like this. But it will get rid of the index.dat files. Also, you'll need to mount that windows partition with write access to be able to delete those files. Shouldn't be too rough if you just browse around on google. Or in a terminal inside of knoppix just type "man mount" and read all the options.

I'm sure the script might be a bit easier though. If you boot into knoppix though you can actually read the index.dat files and see that they really do track your history.

Truthfully, the index.dat files were what finally pushed me over the edge and made me give up windows.

I just open the index.dat with notepad, deleted it's contents then save it (overwrote) the previous one.

Worked for me.

There are actally more than one of those index.dat files, but I don't really remember where they're all at...

I just did a search for index.dat from FreeBSD, and I found 27 instances of it on one WinXP install.

I'd say there were about 8 copies in each of 2 user accounts.

That still left 11 system copies of it, including maybe five in the actual Windows directory.

Note: not all these hold all the url's you've visited, but more than one does I believe. For those that don't know what this file is, go look around on:

In XP and forward, the index.dat is not visible, the only way to view, ever, is to copy the contents of that folder to My Documants.

However, just because you cant view or access it doesnt mean its not there. If you know the path, and open a CMD prompt, then terminate Explorer.exe, you can delete it from there.

Guess what? It's gets replaced, so the best you can hope for is having a fresh one with less history in it.

lol , try replicating it.........
and its not visible? lol

lame

the best way to get rid of enteries simply put ur clock ahead by 5-10 yrs and reboot.........turn out microsoft wants to be uptodate with ur personal information.

Lets keep things simple sometimes

You calling ME lame? boy from india

"Index.dat files can be very hard to find. If you are in Windows, even with "Show hidden files and folders" enabled, index.dat files are not visible and cannot be found if you do a search for index.dat files. The reason that these files are so invisible is that they are not just hidden, they have been designated as "system" files. System files and folders are treated differently in DOS and Windows and are effectively cloaked from casual searches."

"index.dat can not be erased manually. Even if you clean up your cache, cookies, and history from within the Internet Explorer browser regularly, the index.dat files can not be erased and will continue to store information about what web sites you have visited and what cookies have been saved"

http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread/t-3349.html

"the problem is, when you delete whats in the index.dat or if you even remove the file, windows notices that and recreates it on reboot....here is what you can do instead going into index.dat every so often, you can create a purge script "

http://www.exits.ro/index-dat-files.html

"They keep basically a copy of whatever there is in that folder and they continue keeping those records even after you have deleted the contents of those folders. These files can be very hard to find and erase. If you are in Windows, even with "Show hidden files and folders" enabled, these files are not visible and cannot be found if you do a search for these files. The reason that these files are so invisible is that they are not just hidden, they have been designated as "system" files. System files and folders are treated differently in DOS and Windows and are effectively cloaked from casual searches. "

lol
invisible is not the same as hard to find....u get scripts that can read what shyte is written inside,,,,,,,,u can delete it by creating another administrator account........you can clock ur comp by 5yrs ahead to delete enteries........

1 more this u proved ur lame.......if u ever open windows credits.......ull see how many people from india are there in it. (my sister is a programmer in microsoft)

25% programmers at microsoft are indian programers........
when ur cia could not crack afgani codes, they contacted a 15yr old hacker from india......

ur a lame kid, a wannabe.

The issue isnt that it cant be found, or see it, the issue was eradicating the data. Most users do not have the means to simply view or edit the data, so your arguement regarding simplicity is as lame as you are.

I was the one that said a simple script can do it, YOU were the one who crashed your system so bad you had to reinstall your O/S ! Then you used a 3rd party software to do it.

i deleted index.dat on xp, system crashed had to format.......

if you want to clear its enteries , then use window washer 4.8 or higher......

Not to overstate the obvious in a thing, but you dont work for microsoft, your sister does, your a system crasher.

As far as Ankit Fadia is concerned, I seriously doubt you can walk in his shadow.

it wasnt invisible thats - A

then if u delete index.dat in xp. the gui gets fucked up, copy may be replicated but the structure o index, dat is lost,

i take pride in crashing sustems, crashed xp with index.dat, and loginui.exe and some other similar shyte

1 more thing it takes a lot to READ........

i said . lets keep things simple, either i can put some scripts ( which again would be third party for me as i am not a programmer) in my start up, or just simple click "wash now"........

i chose wash now......

ur a rascist when you called me an Indian boy, yes i am an indian , and damn fuckin proud of it,

cha ching............har har har......... ya must know what this means

perspective is a funny thing, thats why some wear glasses, they just cant see too well.

If you want to think you "got it" please, by all means, look in the mirror, pat your self on the head, and say it to yourself over and over.

It's time for you to go play somewhere else for a while.

Windows Washer definetly cleans index.dat

Topique
July 28th, 2003, 09:56 AM
ok, tnx for all your help guys.

I did dl window washer but I didnt like it that much. So I got another "version" of PurgeIE and it did take care of my index.dat. You actually have the option of deleting or overwriting 3 of the index.dat files on your PC. For some reason I have four index.dat. So I open it with notepad, and deleted it and saved it again. I think it did work.
