View Full Version : Help! POPUP Attack Every 30seconds! I'm Being Attacked!

Okay the title is a little overexageraded (spelled that wrong)

Anyways, I am having a problem! I get a popupS every minute. Sometimes it's 3/minute. Sometimes it's 5/30seconds! I'm not running any programs that put off popups such as p2p programs. Every program is closed but my browser and maybe windows media 9 playing music.

I have run adaware deleted the stuff it detected and it still doesn't work!

I am running a popup blocker, and everytime it blocks a popup it makes a short noise. And anyways about 8 or 9 popups came like within 1/2 second of each other and I thought I was getting shot at! (I accidently left my speakers on loud after listening to music!)

I need to get help with these popups, I cannot get shot at anymore by my computer (LoL :mellow )

Wait, after I posted I ran a Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and I clicked Processes since I'm on windows xp and there are like 25 IEEXPLORE.EXE open! I'm guessing these must be the popups, but they don't show anywhere on the screen since I closed them.

What in the hell is going on?

I could be wrong, but I bet you its the messenger service in XP

Go to start > run, then type in servics.msc

Find the messenger service, go to properties, and from the drop down list, select "disabled"

I would suggest going in and del all cookies and temp internet files. Also go into Program files and check them all making sure there are no unusual programs that werent there before.

Yes I was viewing warez site, those sites to get full mp3 albums. but no adult ones. And for the servics.msc i tried, but doesn't work.

and for program files and stuff I did that all already.

Thanks for the help.

Ahh, you might have gotten an endless loop because of a java exploit, I got that one time, norton caught it, but I tried it again without norton....it gave me popups till my ram filled up and my computer froze.

Is it still doing it? Just reboot. If it does it after that, do a virus scan, spybot scan, and possibly a good trojan scanner. Also if you have a firewall, watch it, see if something is talking back.

Okay well I ran Window Washer, I haven't run it for about a week and it deleted 455.1MB of junk off my computer. Hopefully some popup crap was included in that deletion.

Cydor - I have a popup blocker! But I can't just use that, because everytime a popup blocker comes it stores it on the ram or something and once it's full my computer will freeze!!!

not-bob how do you do the disable active scripting?

if your using ie turn off active scripting.
you really dont need java scripting on unless your creating web scripts, or are involved in java applet gaming or filling out forms.

sounds like nitrious pop ups.
---------------
i disable active scripting
best friend for life
unless when i need it to do something there is definitely no need to have it on.

How about using Restore to go back a few days before your warez site F'ed your puter? I would guess that it stuck something in there thats keeps coming back. Anybody else have any reason why this wouldn't be a good idea?

I'm fine. I just re-did my computer. I have two hard drives so I just put what I wanted to keep on the 2nd hard drive, it wasn't that big of a deal.

Thanks for all the help!

they're probably messenger popups. Go into Control Panel ---> Administrative Tool ---> Services, and stop and disable the messenger service.

You need a new popup blocker, I'd also recomend the proxomitron, works wonders. I'll get you a good config list if you need it.

you don't need a popup blocker

all you need is a browser like opera or mozilla that blocks popups and you need to be more careful what you click yes to (and don;t allow others to use your computer while you are gone)

popups come from installing shady programs that you really don't need (kazaa, gator, etc.) be careful what you install, and you'll be fine

True, but you can also block banner ads, or remove where they were completely with the proxomitron, I just like how it makes the pages look, very clean.

there are two great pop up blockers I recommend

Pop up stopper by panicware

and Smart pop up Killer

They both are available at www.download.com

with mozilla and a big hosts file you can do the exact same thing

i don't look at red x's or ads

I don't let others touch my precious 3.06ghz computer lol. And btw we all have our own computers/laptops so i know that no one goes on it. I must have clicked something wrong when I was on the music warez site

The only thing that google toolbar blocks is popups when LEAVING a site, so that doesn't do you much good.
