I just grabbed my usual smattering of mp3s off the net, and noticed offhand i was getting sick transfer rates from this one user. I dl'd a bunch o musik, threw it in a playlist and got in the shower. 20 seconds later, the track freaked out... like a wierd screeching like the mp3 wasnt formatted right. I checked and all the tracks I downloaded behave like this. One of the tracks was off a new release, so I went and downloaded it again, from someone else. Same wierdness, and definitely not the same file. Any ideas?

Probably got hold of some of those bogus files the RIAA has had posted out there. If you got the file from a different user, it may still be the same file internally ie: same size or they may be getting wise and flooding thousands of files of different sizes and under different names. I have seen some talk about how the RIAA finds those users who have large share files and this may be the way they do it . Offer the latest songs in bogus format and when you are DLing from them, they run a bot to check your share list as in "find more from same user", and boom you're f*&cked. My advice is find a website that lists verified files. Or search the forums for which programs do the best for music but also best for weeding out shit files.

Another way to avoid fakes is to search for higher bit rates, [not 192kbps, over that]
if you are using kazaa, k++ or whatever, heres instructions: [I'm bored]
1. Type in whatever you want, and click on audio.
2. Click on more search options.
3. Check the check box that says quality.
I think you might have to scroll down, so that the pull down's are on screen for the bit rates and stuff, not sure though, I just guess where I am in the box, lol.
4. Set the bit rate to at least 224 and you won't find a riaa fake, right now, get away from my genius!

happened to me once on kazaa...

just dl better quality mp3's, or ones with more sources... i hope that more people share files with at least full music, and not silence... lol.

but don't shoot for the moon with 192+ kbps mp3's... 128-192 is pretty much the norm. not many people are that concerned with their music to encode at 256 or 320kbps. you hafta find a better, less known network for high-quality mp3's... i hear piolet/blubster is good for high-quality mp3's.

This is gonna be similar to my post in the other thread but I have had the same problem in the last few weeks. Every single song I have download recently had the same problem as dubstylee's and I alwasy download the song with the most users. So the songs I have been downloading had way more users then the other songs. Like the one i download has 100+ users and the others have like under 20. Plus it has always been at least 192 kbps. That blows my whole method of staying away from fake files out of the water. Now I am gonna have to find the song with the least users (lol) and still good quality. (maybe not the least users but definitely not the most users). I have downloaded at least 50 songs in the last few weeks, all of them fairly new and popular, and they have all had pretty much the same problem.

Wow this is happening more and more. I am seeing more posts about this. The only thing is when I got my first fake file I never read about it, I just knew what was going on.

But it has begun. millions of fake files being downloaded each day and getting shared more as some users don't delete them. Why? they probably just forget.

Is there more then one codec for mp3s or do they all use the exact same algorithm?

And if there are different mp3 codecs then does the mp3 contain the location of the codec to download?

My solution is like something other than the crap played on the radio cause that's what is getting flooded

... I downloaded a bunch of stuff by nightwish a while ago... I liked it alot, and today i ordered 3 CD's off of Amazon.com ... so much for hurting CD sales.. P2P only hurts sales of CD's that suck

most files you find on kazaa will have loops, long pauses in the middle, Beeps, some screeching, or madonna asking you what the F#%k you doing?... I use kazaa for hit songs on the radio, its hard but filtering through you sometimes can get the full album, but if you wait to release dates, on MIRC, people would list it as RETAIl and have the copy with coverart and 192 quality for all the songs. THE COpywrite cd's are getting ripped and have distortion or static in the first two songs, happend to Jennifer lopez remixes, and Kelly Clarkson thankful, first track sounds bad, but gets better.

RIAA must be paying a fortune for all of this bandwidth. Oh well, just go about your life. Kazaa is a huge target for the RIAA, just let the newbies have it. Use it as a last resort for music, that's all I gotta say. Tell everyone you meet with fakes to delete them and make sure you delete your own, especially movies, there's nothing worse than spending 2 days downloading a fake movie...just because someone was too lazy to delete it or tell you it was a fake with IM.

Yeah kazaa is fine, you just got to look at the file name. For 50 cent most fakes say RNS. Look for more common names. And files the average Joe would make. For instance ones made my Simplemp3.com or Real Jukebox. Those are made my normal users also the file type .WMA isn't RIAA. I had a lot of trouble too. But rather than download 15 files at a time, i just checked the files carefully it probably took a minute, just to find it. It's mainly on music copyrighted 2003 and anything new. 50 cent, and David Banner songs are worst right now. good point, its important you delete fakes, that's how we keep networks full of people by making the number of fakes not seem so overwhelming.

If you find one of those superfast guys sharing crapped out stuff, and you're not using your bandwidth for anything else, keep downloading off him like mad, delete the files, and do it again. Think about it, maybe they have 1000 people seeding crap. But there are 60 MILLION of us. That comes out to 60,000 people per one of them. If enough people do this, they will end up paying ENORMOUS amounts for that quantity of bandwidth. I mean, truly HUGE amounts.

I do that all the time, just saturate my bandwidth with their crap, delete it, and do it again. If they wanna waste 130kps, and I'm not using my bandwidth, hey, no problemo, I am willing to waste it for em! In fact, I have one of them guys going right now, chewing up his bandwidth. Kinda fun to know I am doing something constructive, and he isn't. ;)

1. Always check what you download before putting it into your shares folder
2. Only share complete files that you have screened.
3. Older files will not sound as good as newer versions.
4. Only share high quality mp3's. Anyhing you download that sounds bad, delete.
5. I have come accross more bad files, this may be due to lack of understanding in making a good quality mp3, transfer errors, or something else.
6. Some movies do not play if you do not have the right codec's installed.
7. Windows media player does not play mp3's well on my one computer, but winamp plays the mp3s perfectily.
8. Only share from users who validate there files before sharing.
9. Aways use a disclaimer.
10. Expect some bad downloads. If all you get is blank files, then rethink who you get from where.

Yeah really, there are a lot of posts about bogus files. Just turn on the block bogus files in the filter list of kazaalite. I never got a bogus file yet.

For anyone who still has Kazaa Lite i would not use it. Not because of the prying eyes of the RIAA, and not because there is a chance of getting sued. But as discussed the bogus files are out of control. I for 1 have switched over to DC++, but still have Kazaa,Imesh, and Bear share for software, and videos.
