Is the RIAA after people downloading music AND movies or just music? Thanks

The RIAA interest is in ppl sharing music (movie copyrights is the domain of the MPAA). However I would not be surprised if MPAA is watching the RIAA's recent tactics with great deal of interest. They might end up using the same methods in the future if they are successful.

Thanks a LOT. I was scared there for a second. So the MPAA isnt monitoring downloads yet?

I am sure they are monitoring and some ppl have received cease and desist letters from thier ISP for sharing certain movies.
However its not as extensive and organized the RIAA's recent claim that they'll start sueing en mass after they collect enough info on ppl sharing music.

If you have $15 to $20 in your pocket right now to buy one item, which would you think will be better value for your money, DVD or CD?

Personally, I would buy DVD!

Wow, you must have an IQ of 250 for knowing that!

Anyway, I would buy dvd, its better value..

But I recently (yesterday) bought a cd, just because I really like the artist, and he deserves my support. (and it was only 14 $/€)

they already do

that's the BSA (business software alliance), and they send ISP letters too (mostly for Adobe and Macromedia products, no joke!)

Right now, I don't believe they track what you download, only what you share, so get it before people stop sharing it...but past that

BTW, 2800 posts baby YEAH

If I liked the artist a lot, but they were signed with one of the 5 big labels, I would just donate it to them, I'm sure they allow for donations through their website via paypal. If it was an indie label, I'd buy the CD. If I wanted to get the highest quality and was really anal about quality of music, I'd just go on amazon.com or ebay and buy it used from someone that way I'm not supporting the RIAA.

The BSA tracks software (buisness software association, or alliance, can't remember. Its not the Boy Scouts of America though!)

They track quite a lot of software. Some companies even scan on their own.

My neighbor's 17 year old son, downloaded Johnny English, thru Bittorrent. He woke up Friday morning with no internet. He called his ISP tech support, only to be given an 800 number and a reference number.

They told him that the Movie Johnnie English had been downloaded, the date, and the time, the file size and the exact title. The number he called, was a new department the ISP has had to create to handle these situations, a branch of the "Abuse" department. They had told him he needed to do a search on his son's computer, and read the results to him over the phone, then told him he needed to stop the firewall the computer was currently running so they could verify that this file was no longer on that computer.

My neighbor told him the search came up with nothing..... the search box was blank. But he did look in program files and see the Bittorrent program there. The person then told him, he needed to delete the Bittorrent program, before he could restore his internet services. So my neighbor went to add/remove programs and removed the program, and deleted the directory, told the man this, and his service was restored while he was still on the phone with him.

My neighbor found out, that his son did indeed download the movie, but started to watch it and thought it was stupid and deleted it. But I do not think for 1) The ISP had a right to have him search his son's computer and report the results, which could have been incriminating, since he is responsible for his son's actions, 2) To make him stop the firewall so the ISP could port scan him or whatever else they do, and 3) To make him delete Bitttorrent - Having Bittorrent is not illegal, I have never see anything that says it is illegal to have on your computer.

Plain and simple, they bullied someone who was not computer savvy, to do what they wanted, so he could re-start his internet service.

But..... Yes they are notifying people of Movie downloads, and not just from Kaaza. although it seems their most popular target so far.

Bittorent is completely different, when you download, you're uploading. Period.

That is a bit strange though...the ISP asked him to take his firewall down so he could be hacked by them? I'd complain about that.
