Jimi Hendrix wins cos if you watch Woodstock you have to believe this is the coolest man who ever played guitar (or smoked a big spliff in front of a crowd of zillions).

Ken's Top Te.......er.......Eleven List (I like to be difficult)

1.) Led Zeppelin (I could never dream of a better band)

2.) The Rolling Stones

3.) The Beatles (I guess by some's standards they should be 1 or 2, but I don't particularly like them; so yes there is somewhat of a bias).

4.) The Doors

5.) Nirvana

6.) Metallica

7.) Tool (Probably wouldn't make anyone's top 30 list. On VH1's stupid best hard rock bands, it came in somewhere in the high 80's I believe.)

8.) Pearl Jam

9.) Lynyrd Skynyrd

10.) Pink Floyd

11.) Guns n' Roses (believe it or not)

And "The Who" get no honorary mention because of a personal bias on my part (again). I don't really care for them that much.

Hmmm

1. The Doors-Duh
2. Led Zepplin-A band that evolved itself and music.
3. Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention-You either got Frank or you didn't but you couldn't deny his genius.
4. Pink Floyd--My 1st concert so I have to include them.
5. Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble-You only had to watch Steve play to see how amazing he was and you only had to talk to him to find out what an amazing human being he was.
6. Lynyrd Skynyrd-The band that defied tragedy to rise from the ashes not once or twice but three times now
7. Black Sabbath--Great band, great tunes, great live
8. Bob Marley & The Wailers-Introduced a whole new style of music to the world
9. The Jimmy Hendrix Experience- So far ahead of his time and gone from us way too damn soon
10. Big Brother & The Holding Company- Nobody sang the blues like Janis Joplin. Never before and never since.

There ya go my top 10 today. If you ask me tommorrow it might be different though....

Shadow, Thief of the Sun
July 17th, 2003, 09:34 PM
"Traditional" Rock:
Pixies
Faith no More
Slowdive
Sonic Youth
Pungent Stench

Oddball bands and just curious/great ones:

Legendary Pink Dots
Zoviet-France
Windy and Carl
Coil
Hafler Trio
Maeror Tri
A Small Good Thing
Zoar
Muslimgauze

And i can probably call some more names, but i doubt that its worth it since not so many people here heard anything about them.

I don't like so-called "classic rock" for the most part. Of course its just my opinion, so i decided to choose somewhat different bands than mentioned by others.

Had Ken done a top 14 list, he would have included Sabbath, AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne (just his solo career which in my opinion outshines Sabbath) next (not in that order).

I like the Beatles' work, but I do think they're overrated, at least I don't think Revolver deserves to be #1 on many critics' best album lists. Haven't listened to the Stones much (except for Exile On Main Street), and not enough of the Doors (I know mojo-ris-in, I know), so I won't put them on my list. Solo artists and non-rock musicians are excluded.

1. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention
2. The Velvet Underground
3. The Pixies
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
5. The Clash
6. My Bloody Valentine (surprise!-- would be higher if they released more than two excellent albums)
7. Led Zeppelin
8. Yo La Tengo
9. Sonic Youth
10. Radiohead
11. Pink Floyd
12. Hüsker Dü
13. The Smiths
14. Joy Division
15. The Talking Heads
16. Pavement
17. The Smashing Pumpkins
18. Rage Against The Machine
19. Nirvana
20. Fugazi

The numbers aren't the most important thing... these are all bands that I highly respect.

EDIT: made this a top-20 list...

I'm too tired to make a list but some others I like White Stripes, Deftones, Iron Maiden, NIN, KoRn, Tool, and 3EB.

Listen to Portishead. it's brilliant, dark music. Portishead even has a girl in it singing!

Although it's actually spy-soundtrack-with-hip-hop-beats-style music, it's much better than Evanescence (or Linkin Park) will ever be. At least Portishead isn't a Linkin Park (an unoriginal band themselves) knock-off.

yes. especially the material on thier selftitled disc. I find it more devastating than the material on the first disc, Dummy, though new listeners may find Dummy easier to get into. Especially if you listen to Linkin + evanescence.

recommended songs: Numb, Half Day Closing, Sour Times, Elysium, Glory Box. Beth Gibbons has also done really fine solo work, though not in that vein.

the allman brothers is something that doesn't get old and has survived the test of time for me.
The beatles are up there....
recently, the fall of troy and coheed and cambria are my ALL TIME favorites.
RUSH is friggin awesome. moving pictures is a badass CD.
pink floyd has Dark side of the moon.. 9.5/10 sorta CD. there's like one mediocre track and one track with no actual vocals... so yeah
The mars volta is just absolutely crazy
Radiohead and I will give this last one to protest the hero... I haven't heard anything else like them.

The best rock band evah! has to be Vaginal Discharge (http://www.beowolfproductions.com/VaginalDischarge-Froth.html).
Acoustic 2 man folk punk duo with songs like Crack Whores Rule, Give Me A Rimjob, and Lesbian Date Rape, theres something for everyone to enjoy.

What is wrong with you people. Just blurting out names of known bands because you like some of their songs. I have all of Metallica's albums from Kill em' All to Garage Inc. and there is not even one little song that I didnt think was amazing. Metallica would be THE number one on a list formed by someone who knows their shit. It's not the difficulty of the song itself, but the soul that I can totally feel from the music. Kirk isn't playing a bunch of stuff he worked out and finally decided to put in. He felt that shit, then just played it and James and Lars probably just looked at him like " o_o... hell ya, put that in there, that sounded like it fit perfectly with the song" Don't judge them unless you have listened to them without thinking "this is gonna suck" because it will suck. We as humans are all (even me) stupid enough that we trick ourselves on a day to day bases. We'll believe whatever we tell ourselves (don't take that to literally).
