I just installed the new version today. It runs great for a while and then I get the classic windows error popup telling me emule needs to shut down. What the heck is wrong?

Every new version isn't always so great.
I hold back on upgrading till I know a version is stable. Also keep a stable version around in case like what just happened to you happens. Then you just downgrade.
Get a older version of emule. Probably the one prior should work.

Yeah, I'm using the brand new 29.c version. So you think I should go back to b?

Crap! I'm kinda new to all things emule. Where can I find the previous version? They don't have it listed on the website.

what OS are you on?

Yes, I've found some versions are stable, some are just not.
I've tried both eMule and the eMule Plus mod. I simply use the newest version of either or that will stay stable on my machine.
If you're running 98/ME, I would expect an increased chance of instability.

I'm running eMule Plus version 1e and its stable (for the most part). I'm running Windows 98SE.
I suggest trying a different version, perhaps even eMule Plus as long as its stable.
Make sure you uninstall previous versions first (completely).

If you go to the emule forum you will see their are many modified emule versions. Emule is open source and many programmers have been working and adding more and more features. But the trend has mad emule bloated and now are actually making lite versions, taking out features.
It's a crazy scene but some Modified versions are quite nice and better than the original versions.
Emule plus is one of the more popular Mods.
There are others that are good and depending on a persons OS, sometimes the cut down versions save on your system resources and run better. Emule plus is not a lite version but has a reputation for being stable and a good client.
You will need a fan of emule plus to tell you the specific differances.
I gave up on emule plus a few versions ago when I saw how big it was getting.
I am using a custom version of emule 29a, stormit a member of the emule forum posted a few fixes and I grabbed them and 29a has been working great for me now.

I installed version 29b and it's working great so far. Much better than c
Thanks for all your help. I've been using Kazaa lite while avoiding all ather P2P apps. But so far I like what I see with emule. Should solve the corupted file problem I get with games over Kazaa as well.

As I stated in another trend, try turning off the power mangament in Windows (Monitor and Hard Drive Shut Off = Never).
This might help prevent emule from crashing.

I installed 29c yesterday and it did a weird thing. In the status column it identified 3 d/l as "erroneous". I hadn't seen this before, only "waiting" or "downloading". The Speed column showed a d/l speed rating which didn't change and actually nothing was happening. I restarted the mule and everything was ok, it rehashed the files it suspected of being "erroneous" and decided actually they were OK and now all is normal again. no more weird stuff.
mules are bad tempered. though they work hard sometimes they like to kick you. if you see the ears move back get out of the way. never walk around the back of a mule. feed your mule with nice tasty carrots, sugar lumps, and lots of verified dvd rips and he will try to please you. usually.
