Could the RIAA & MPAA destroy America's tech edge?

I came across this article (http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030716.gttechjuly16/BNStory/Technology/) stating while America may have the edge in technology now, it may lose it several years from now.

I wonder if all these copyright laws and the DCMA could limit the innovation in American technology.

Other countries don't have to put up with all these laws.

When there is long unemployment lineup of American programmers do you think the RIAA and the MPAA would take the blame for this?

It is not just laws that will stifle American innovation, it is the whole short term profit attitude that western companies hold so dear. Shareholders and shareprices is what dominates business in the west, no where more so than the UK, but still extremely strong in America.
The japanesse companies work together, not to increase profit, but to share ideas to create something better for society. They work for the consumer. Their companies don't have patents or other copyright, as other companies may be able to improve on what they have done. This is the exact reason FOR copyright in America. A company with a copyright has a stronger shareprice, but a company with lower profits because of R+D cost have a weaker shareprice.

I agree. I mean come on technology is oinly going to expand and not go down. Look at from way back when the world started, it has only increased and will continue. And like you said were America the most advance country in the world.

I think that in these next couple of years we will see more innovation in technology because it will be challenging. The MPAA and RIAA will contribute to an advancement in technology at a faster rate. We should thank them.. They will lose yes, but not before we have more encryption, security, and overall more power to the consumer.. us...

I'd say if the RIAA & MPAA are examples of American business practice. We are losing the edge in business that's for damn sure.
A bunch of greedy, incompetant ,nincompoops trying to sell music and not knowing a damn thing about music, other than how to try and squeeze another buck out of some lame crap they think is music.

russia makes big missile, usa makes bigger missile, etc etc.

in this case, the riaa is making "a big missile" by sending every third guy they find on kazaa sharing something, to court.

p2p people will step back, and say "hey im greedy, i want my network to be more popular so i can then throw in spyware and make lots of money", so they will step up to the plate and make sure the riaa can't identify who is sharing what.

but, in the end of this cold war, the riaa will end up realizing how stupid they were to have wasted all their money on trying to stop the unstoppable, and they will simply close shop.

p.s.: tech won't be destroyed by the riaa... it'll be pushed forward...

I agree with Isus .It looks more and more like technology could be going through a huge boom in the next few years due to numerous developments that force constant upgrades and improvements in existing software :

1. The ongoing battle with the RIAA and their cronies that seek to limit the availability of movies, tv and music from the average consumer to protect their their respective money-grubbing monopolies . Their actions have actually led to a constant search for new and improved technology designed to thwart the RIAA and their allies and allow access to cable tv, satellite tv, downloading music and movies, copying games, programs, cd's movies etc.

2. The increase in spyware and adware has led to a boom in programs designed to detect and delete the various trojans, cookies and registry entires placed by these programs on a users computer.

3. The constant threat of viruses has led to a development of many new virus protection programs and constant upgrades of those on the market.

4. The threat of your computer being hacked has resulted in a huge boom in firewall and security related programs to make your data as safe as possible.

5. The flood of spam directed to all E-Mail accounts has resulted in a huge increase in programs and applications designed to detect and delete such junk mail .Some estimate that up to 50 % of the mail on the internet is now spam.
Most people agree some action has to be taken to combat this invasion of privacy and misuse of the internet resources. Its also a proven fact that many viruses, spyware and adware come from much spam.

I would fully expect for all the reasons stated above, there is no reason to fear that technology will lag behind the rest of the world.
