commodore 64 coming back?

i heard on techtv that the commodore 64 was coming back, why would anyone want to do this? i never did use a commodore 64 (even though its still in our closet), but i heard it was the top of the line back then, 64 kilobytes of ram is how much it had i think. the games on the c64 did look kind of cool, but they kind of look like the atari games.

i also heard that the company who is bringing back the c64 will sue programmers who use the commodore 64 in there emulator packages like mame etc, which i think is dumb.

Comming back from WHERE???? The STONE AGE??? Mabye it is a COMMUNIST PLOT! (Oh, wait! I forgot....The russians are our friends now! Oh well....) Seriously though, are you sure you heard what they were saying right?? Why would somebody want a system slower than a 386 computer and be dependant on floppy discs that are as big as pancakes and disc drives that are even bigger? If they are planning on any kind of comeback, it will only be one for enthuesiasts! I just can't see this going mainstream.....because.... A. the technology is so old it is practically USELESS unless you just like playing those good old pixelated games! and B. you can buy a whole commodore 64 system on ebay for 40 or 50 bucks! NOT very profitable! Why would somebody buy a brand new system when you can get a used system for next to nothing....which is about what that system is worth! Next to nothing!

Ahh the good old commodore 64 days........my first computer

I remember hopefully waiting/wishing that the each game would load up correctly and then after 20 minutes finding the game hadn't loaded, readjust the tape heads and try again..

Anyway about the c64 making a comeback, well there is an emulator for the PC named COMEBACK so perhaps this is what you heard about.

From what I was able to gather from the article was that the current owner of the Commodore 64 name, a Dutch company called Tulip, is partnering with another company to develop devices and software that will work with the current emulators as opposed to rereleasing the machine. They also state that as long as developers are not making money off c-64 emus, they have no worries as they are not interested in killing their fanbase. I doubt very seriously that Tulip is serious about this as this is not the 1st time they have said the C-64 is rising from the dead. Back in 1998, they were developing a set top web box similar to Webtv that promised to have a built in emu for c-64 game playing and basic internet surfing capabilities. The Webbit (They were really gonna call it this lol) was shown at a large Dutch trade show but was never released to the general public and quickly faded away.

Well to me......in the days of 3.02 gigabyte processor chips, over 100 gig hard drives and gigs of RAM along with LCDs, video and sound cards, etc. whats the point??? I mean...really!?? Does someone have that much a sense of... de ja vu?? It just seems silly to talk of reviving a system 20 years old! Sure, I had a c64 myself and really did enjoy it....but..... that was then....this is now! You have to hook it up to a TV set for crying out loud! Back in those days, you didn't even dream of the things I posted about, much less thought they would EVER become affordable or even reality! I mean, I am talking about days when the 386 was not even out yet!! And owning a computer was very rare indeed!, That is why all this talk of reviving a c64 seems a bit redundant!

Again they are not releasing the C64 again. They are releasing new software and peripherals for existing PC emulators. And while I do agree that it is a niche market, apparently they feel that with 6,000,000 people worldwide that have C64 emulators installed on their PCs there is a way to make money. Let's face it, this is NOT Commodore Business Machines. Tulip basically bought the name Commodore 64 and are now trying to find a way to make money off the name.

This sounds crazy I remember my first computer was a VIC20 and it had a cassette tap drive. The first game I got was omega race. I think the C64 came out after the vic20 Ah! gotta love the good ol memories.

Weather or not they are making the HARDWARE for it is irrevelant! My point WAS and still IS that I doubt very seriously that they will be able to make money off a computer system over 20 years old! period! Weather or not they upgrade the software and introduce new ways to use it. with exsisting emulators or not!! I guess I can see those people who are interested in the c64 for old times sake USING this new software.....but PAYING for it??? I doubt it very seriously! You are gonna be trying to get a group of people who is used to getting everything free, because the c64 system is so old that now you can get almost any game and emulator for the c64 free of charge! I know, there was a simon and schuster star trek game they no longer make anymore that I wanted to play again. So I just downloaded an emulator, found the game and played it! All FREE OF CHARGE! My point is, that this group of people might actually be worse than convincing p2p users to stop sharing....why?? Because you would be trying to convince them to pay for something you can now get LEGALLY whereas most p2p users know that the stuff they download is illegal. Good luck to them....but I doubt it will work!
