i got a question for all of ya 80's people, did you like the rap music they had back then? i personally think it is better than the rap thats out today, im kind of into the old school stuff, like beastie boys, grand master flash, mc hammer (gotta love the pants lol), mantronix, and all the other old school artists.

if you did like the old school rap, which artists were your favorite?

Yes, back then rap was about having fun. it wasn't violent, it wasn't about "bitches, and ho's", murder, fucking, wanting to tap "dat ass" It wasn't brainless idiocy that it has become now.

It was creative, they mixed styles of music, it had a melody (well, more so then it does today anyway)

Modern rap is terrible.

Yeah I agree. Old School is the way to go these days.

Check out Kool G and DJ Polo. Road to the Riches is a classic.

I like old school rap and I must say it all depends on the artist.
but i liked mc lyte *nicki d*
roxanne
bdp
kurtis blow
eric b and rakem
hmm such a long time and long list. but basically i like the groups
that were real core. hehe
some music can be hardcore as well * and i i like it i like it* but thats just the way it goes. to each there own.
*cough* if you profile me i have a long list of old school rap artists i like, but your search can take awhile.

and i agree with psi about the rap idealogy
back then rap wasnt about guns violence etc
it was about people having a good time
nice beats
beat boxing etc
well from my experience anyways all i have to say that some of the best old school rappers come from out east. *cough* nyc.
but i am sure there are other states they came from too.

rap to me was about hearing music, beats etc and not hearing about mofo*motherfuckers* getting shot up. worse even yes check a lyrical sentence of a basic 2000 rap thing.
i took my glock and shove it up your ass
next thing you do you going 6 feet under
*and other stuff*
i mean i still listen to rap but it has to be according to how i feel about the song etc. if it has flavor *when i say flavor it has taste it has a good beat, instrumental etc*.

basically i like rap music that u can dance to and has some good lyrics but to be honest some rap i like can be more or less with cursing reality etc.
hands down i like tupac *and * eminem* and others.
yeah i surely contradicted myself by saying that the rap i remember or listen to shouldnt contain lyrics or violence but i go with the flow of the music or the tempo etc.

so sure i am a hypocrit and i admit it but to me if the music brings a good spirit to me, calms me down or makes me mellow then i have no problem with it. and being that this topic is about old school rap i will have to say yeah i loved it.
i even will say special ed is old school
then this nice song i liked was self destruction
*it goes something like this*
your headed for self destruction
self destruction
todays topic is self destruction.

anyway that is how i feel about old school rap.
peace and listen to whatever is clever smoothe fella :)
woot woot
and the
whole
shebang.
back to reaLity for me whatever that will be :))

does anyone here remember how much a rap record (not a cd) cost back in the 80's? i am a big fan of mantronix, he can make some funky beats, and good lyrics with his songs, check out bassline, and fresh is the word. kurtis blow also is a good early rap artist, my favorite song he did has to be the breaks.

i do agree that rap music today has gotten to commercial, and all it is about is bitches, ho's, pimpin, etc like what was said above, it be cool to see a new artist come along and make old school sounding rap music like it was in the 80s.

Borgster, you talk about it like you were in your prime in the 80s.

Maybe there's local people doin' 80s-style rap. That'd be neat to see.

Hip-Hop, not rap, had it's Golden Era 86-87 but I'd like to think all of the late eighties was, and still is the best example of this genre of music. Forget the shit that's in the charts right now, it's all plastic and fake.

Big Daddy Kane and the rest of the Juice Crew (Check out The Symphony), BDP aka KRS-ONE (not sure what the rest did). Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, L.L Cool J, Beastie Boys, Ultra Magnetic M.C's (particually Kool Keith), Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Flavor Unit.

And the early 90's was good too.

Jesus, how the hell could I forget Run-DMC?! Better to get the greatest hits album though.

And if you want a wicked track by a DJ from my neck of the woods, try DJ Mink - Hey, Hey, Can you relate. Best UK rap record ever made in my opinion, better than Derek B. And check out Hijack, London Possee, MC Duke and Demon Boyz.

EDIT: I should say there's a whole shit load of mixes of that track (DJ Mink), the original 'Hard Rap' version is the best.

Kind of a misconception. Older Rap DID include lyrics about guns, drugs, money, hoes. But, at the time it was used in a story telling context, not as the meat and potatoes of an album. Rap and/or Hip-Hop has only went to shit in the mainstream. Most of the music people judge it by is like the Nickelback equivelant of Rap. Cookie cutter shit that is pumped out there because it sells. Check out artists like Zion-I, Immortal Technique, and Aesop Rock for actual talent.

Gah, how could I not mention De La Soul. They are still going, too.

"I got the trees in my back yard, and it's hard for them to tell a lie to me
now who's the foot, I'm the foot, but who's steppin
Ain't no half steppin, know we're half steppin
I'm the greatest mc in the world"

I can't beleive that nobody has mentioned Slick Rick! One of THE best MCs ever!

Some others forgotten:

Sir Mix a lot
Biz Markie
Special ED
Too Short
Did you guys forget EPMD...... shame on you!!!!!
Kool Moe Dee
NWA
kool G rap and dj polo

Good call! EPMD=one of my all time favorites. Not many kids these days have ever heard of EPMD. Aldo Kool G Rap is a genius. Rakim is a genius. I wish for a Rakim, Kool G Rap, and Big Daddy Kane supergroup. That'd be so awesome. Kind like Crooklyn Dodgers.

You also forgot about Gangstarr! Guru is one of the most underrated MCs ever. DJ premire is also one of the best DJs.

schooly d was great: nice post matt merch.

There are many other classics. Too many to mention. I feel so old sometimes! This is the music I grew up with.

Ain't that the truth. Aesop Rock is one of my favorite MCs. I can't believe that I actually saw a video by him on MTV2 (when they actually used to play music videos). El-Producto (El-P), formerly of Company Flow is another of my favs. I'm wishing for a Company Flow reunion.

Edit: I didn't see A Tribe Called Quest, either. Or the Fat Boys.

Sir Mix a Lot has some killer bass, I used to be into old school rap alot, like sugarhill gang, run dmc, beastie boys even (some songs were ok)

funkmaster flex was cool, hmm what others...word of mouth, theres others but its been so long

flava flav...lol but when i want bass, you know where i go, cause sometimes this heavy metal just doesnt hit the right bass tones i like, i love hearing my subs rattle my car apart

I'd go with public enemy, geto boys (mainly scarface), run-dmc, LL. But i was a little too young, i had to do a little catching up later. My rap days started with snoop, pac, nas, jay-z, notorious big... to name a few.

I'll have to check, but the whole Company Flow/Rawkus/Definitive Jux thing is still going as far as I know. They just mobbed out off of the Rawkus label and started Def Jux.

Mix was always something of a "hometown hero" as there really was never anyone else to get attention in rap out of the Northwest. And I won't count the bay area as northwest.

When I was younger we got into stereo shit, and had subs around the house (we weren't old enough to drive). We would play a lot of DJ Magic Mike, DJ Fury, Power Supply, Techmaster P.E.B., and Bass Outlaws. It was all basicly bass heavy techno, but cool to get your chest rattling.
