Yes....I know...It's a sad shame that I still use dial-up. Fear not, however, I recently ordered DSL, but the service will take 2 weeks to turn on according to my provider. Until then, I'm hoping someone can help me with my little problem.
Recently I had to buy a new US Robotics 56k Faxmodem to replace a dying Smart Link modem.
I use Soulseek, and with the Smart Link modem I was able to get a steady download speed of 5.0k (The modem would usually connect to 45.2k). This new US Robotics modem I have connects at the same 45.2k, but when I try to download something off of Soulseek, the download speed flexes bad. It'll go from 4.5k to 3.9k to 1.8k to 0.9k, and it's fairly annoying.
I have tried getting the new drivers for the USR modem, but with those, no matter what settings I would change, I wouldn't connect to anything higher than 14.4k. So I rolled back to the Microsoft drivers (I have e-mailed the USR tech support about this, but still have heard nothing back).
Can anyone possibly explain why one modem would get a steady connection, while the other flexes like crazy (a lot of the time causing the transfers to fail)?
My OS is XP home.
