I think I've found the solution to piracy, treat music like we treat TV. Would you pay $1 to rent music a music CD or would you continue to use P2P?

Treat music like films not TV, you can not rent or sell tv programmes.

Actually yes you can, I rent Anime all the time.
TV programs you dont have to rent because its already paid for by advertisements. Not saying advertisements couldnt pay for alot of P2P.
The RIAA just doesnt want to profit, they want to starve the artists so the artists will complain they arent getting money because the RIAA knows if they switch to this model its the RIAA who will get less money and not the artist.
I heard the RIAA actually is starting to try to take artists tour money.

I dont know many people who only watch their favorite movie once. I know people who watched the matrix 3-4 times, I know people who watch shows in a series one after another, waiting each week for the show to come on tv, and I know people who will go see Terminator 3, buy the DVD, and then watch it on cable/directtv.
So whats your point? Most music is only worth listening to once unless you are a fan, and if you are a fan you'll go to concerts and buy CD, you wont rent it.

i wouldn't rent a cd.
the reason?
think about how easy it would be to just rip the cd, and return it.
has ANY music exec liked pirated music?
no.
they would pull the dumbass maneuver, smack as much copyright protection as they could on it, and then rent it to us.
and cd with copy protection, no matter how big or small, is not worth any price.
besides, thats when you hook up your discman to your line in and record.

July 14th, 2003, 04:06 AM
yeah why would anyone rent more than one time when they could rip and have their own copy

Anime make cartoon films and just normal short cartoons which may be a series but as they are not part of any TV company they own all the rights to there films and cartoons themselfs so they may allow people like Blockbuster to rent those out to people. We are saying TV programmes owned by TV companys such as 24 is made by a company who is owned by BBC same with the Simpsons FOX own that series and lease it to BBC and to SKY.

About as easy as it is to rip a DVD or VHS tape. Your point?
yeah why would anyone rent more than one time when they could rip and have their own copy
Thats the whole point. But you paid for it so its legal, if you rip it, dont get caught.
Its not like people havent been ripping VHS tapes and DVDs all this time. How do you think they get online half the time?
they would pull the dumbass maneuver, smack as much copyright protection as they could on it, and then rent it to us.
And thats exactly why the Music division is dying while the Movie division is thriving.
I rent a DVD, I dont see all these goofy copy protections. In fact I dont see any. I rent a VHS tape once again no copy protections. I buy a book and I dont see anything to keep me from putting it in a copying machine.
Its impossible to stop people from copying and ripping stuff. Period. The Movie industry has accepted this fact and learned to profit off of this via Blockbuster.
They get paid even when you pirate their DVDs, they know you'll copy it, but you paid for it so its OKAY.

Fox is free TV though, just copy it with your TIVO.
Why would you need to rent it?
Oh and the day they start putting copy protections on DVDs is the day I stop renting DVDs and going to movies.

Maybe i'll stop using p2p in that case, but only if it will be allowed to copy CD's.
The real problem is that i doubt that CD rent will ever come to US. Its very doubtful that record labels will allow that, since they're always afraid to loose money.
Anyway, its a great idea. But like i said - it will never happen in some countries.

I'm from the UK my local video store also rents out Cd's.
Whats the point of renting when you can get what you want for free.

Renting CDs is NOT the same as renting VHS or DVD. CDs can be ripped to formats that are very small (mp3, wma, ogg) easily and quickly. Also, CD burners are cheap now as well as CDs being as low as 25 cents per disk. You cannot say the same thing for ripping DVDs as it will be a giant file, even in the formats that use much smaller sizes (avi, mpeg, etc). Not only that but it does take some practice to rip one as well as money to afford a DVD burner if you want to create copies. Blank DVD's aren't cheap either and you also have to know which ones to buy for your burner. A VHS is a bit different as well. Sure with 2 VCRs you can copy a tape, anyone can do that.. but even then VHS tapes are being used less and less. There is always a way to rip it to your computer, but then you run into that problem of having to get the right shit to do it and probably need to know a little bit of what you are doing.
In short, any dumbass can rip a CD and beat the system. You can't say the same thing for DVD's (and perhaps VHS). (Remember I am talking your average KaZaA Media Desktop user who thinks Bonzi Buddy is a cool program.)

Oh i forgot to post too, that you can go to my local library and take out CDs for free. You don't even have to rent them, just take out your library card, take it, go home burn it, and return it.

and has been for a very long time.
I don't know about USA but here in England I can get pretty much any music I like by renting a CD from the public lending library. They have an excellent collection and anything they dont have they can usually get for me.
It costs £0.70 to rent the CD for a week, I think thats slightly over a dollar US. Of course you only rent once, rip and burn or compress.
I get most of my music this way, maybe 80%, and the rest is downloaded. I still use p2p a lot (24/7) but mostly for movies, iso, games etc.
I won't stop sharing music because there are a few unusual things its easier to get online, as not every CD gets released in every country.
$1 to have a perfect (EAC LAME VBR) mp3 copy of a CD, and a hard copy if I want, seems a good price to me especially when I look at the legal alternative of Apple's $1 per track ! I get guaranteed quality, no shitty rips or low bitrates or corrupt files. And of course the music gets shared out from my hard drive.

guess what?
i rent CD's for free, rip them and use them in P2P, go to your library, there might be a cd you may like in there. I have 2 library cd's with me now and have already rip them. i have gained abot 50 songs in about an hour without d/l OR buying/renting(paying) them!, lol, maybe i am smarter then me thinx?

why rent or download, most family and friends will lend, give or sell you most of their old or recent cd's. most people only listen to them a few times anyway.

July 16th, 2003, 11:04 AM
no...i would never rent.
i want to own it. and since that will never happen.....i will continue to download.
if i can do what i please with everything else i purchase, then i expect to be able to do the same with a cd.
they can go fuck themselves for now.

this was a dumb post, if you rent cds, people will just copy and send them back, but i would not stop using p2p because renting requires money, and p2p is free

Are you kidding me?? DVD's have several copy protection measures put in them. You just have some program that cracks all the security. The security on a dvd is MUCH more than on a cd. Wait, let me think. Oh yeah, a CD has NO protection. That's why there is so much fuss from the RIAA. They are trying to come up with a way to protect their precious cds.

No way will I pay money to rent a CD just to hear the music and find out if i like it. Thats what downloading music on the internet is for. I don't seriously believe that most P2P users will pay money for music as long as they are able to continue to download it for free. If that situtation changes, I might have to reconsider , but I don't think that is very likely.

LoL sorry, but where have you been? As long as you have a DVD rom then your set. Get the program DVDxCopy, and rip and burn away onto regular CD-Rs! DVDxCopy will copy the movie right onto your computer, and if you would like you can take two cd-r's and burn it as a vcd to watch in your dvd player if it supports vcd.
Also some cds do have protection on them also. but it's very easy to crack.
