Some of you might have read this before, but it is easily one of the best reads I have had in a while. (And the worst)

Good article wow that's pretty messed up though. But i guess unfortunately that is the reality of some up and coming Bands. If there are any musicians on the Zp forums i'd like to see what they think.

good article,
Can anyone say indentured servant?
This is why the big labels are fighting so hard to stop internet music and music sharing in all forms, a lot of new bands are using todays technology to create and produce their own albums. They can then distribute them at local gigs and the internet, this makes the major labels very nervous. If the band sells the amount that was used in the article (250 k ) they stand to make a LOT more than if they sign with a label. In this day and age if a band is really good enough they can make it with out a major label signing, there are still costs involved but it is much easier to take out a loan, and get started than to have the labels own your a$$ for years to come.

Another great example of the record industry robbing artists blind.
True it's a really good article to read, but it's sucks too. Artists need more of the profit from their music, and less profit to the record labels!!

reasons to sign to a smaller label that cares about its bands.
Sure, you'll get the pretty videos etc, but you're an idiot if you sign to a major label.
Maybe if you're big and can negotiate, but for a newish band, it makes no sense at all.

It is an excellent article. Negativland has a lot of good stuff on their site. www.negativland.com
The albini link has been posted here a few times, but deserves the attention.
"Independant labels" & "artist control" are both phrases that the RIAA likes about as much as "file sharing".

yes, i've found up here in the Great White North, there r some awesome bands who have never signed with big labels, but r doing just fine.
some have had life-long careers, and i'll bet most of u haven't even heard of them.
deep down, i'm sure they would have loved to sign with some major label, but as psychotronic said, with the way things r going on the net.......they stand to make a lot more money, have a lot more fans,( with the loyalty they long for), if they continue venturing on their own.
i hope they do.
now it's just a matter of the mtvs, muchmusics and radio stations taking them seriously, without the "big label" name behind them.
and as i can see, lots of radio stations and video channels r taking and giving the time to these indie artists.
this i like seeing.
and i have found a lot of artist that i really like, whilst watching/listening to these shows.
