The Orlando Weekly had a contest recently which had readers submit their best essay on the topic of 'Why does Metallica Suck?'.
I missed the contest. (I really have to start reading O.W. more often!), but the results are in. And some of them are pretty damn funny. :cross

All this "Metallica sucks" stuff makes me laugh.

Arguably, they´re albums do suck NOWADAYS, but once upon a time, they were the greatest metal band since Black Sabbath.

So maybe some of these acne-faced teenies who think you´re well´ard should learn to appreciate music a little more and realize that, if it weren´t for Metallica, all these wusses wouldn´t be listening to fucking Linkin Park and Evanescence on the radio.

Like it or hate it, their "Black Album" preceeded by a few months the explosion of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the radio, thus paving the way for heavy music on mainstream radio.
You may argue that most of that music is crap, but it sure as hell beats the pants out of the teenie-bopper crap we´re fed most of the time.

Listen to the "Ride The Lightning" or "Master of Puppets" albums and then come tell me about "the band that never was".

Also, I was fortunate enough to see Metallica live three weeks ago in Spain, and their current show matches the intensity of, say, a Deftones show. You may hate "St.Anger", but live, they still deliver the goods like few others.

End of rant.

metallica sucks.

they killed napster. that's the most important.

then, they go on to refuse to allow singles to be dl'ed from the iTMS, bc they want the albums to be bought.

why? bc they think you need to listen to the whole thing.

maybe someone should clue them in that:
a: they suck (100%) and
b: even bands that don't suck 100% still release cd's that have shitty songs.

In their new video, St. Anger, Metallica performs in various parts of the infamous San Quentin prison. But this choice begs the question: Metallica is at the forefront of the anti-file sharing movement, doing everything in their power to shut down what they consider to be an illegal enterprise. So in their video, they give minutes of camera time to murderers, rapists and hard core gang bangers. There is even a statement at the end of the video saying something to the effect of: all those whose souls have been changed by San Quentin will forever be apart of Metallica.

(Unless they downloaded St. Anger from Kazaa I'm guessing).

Anyone who still likes Metallica cannot possibly like them for the same reasons as when they were GREAT, because they are not the same band, I mean does anyone know the whereabouts of Kirk Hammett, because that guy has totally disappeared from their music, no solos, WTF? they suck now and that's that, I really do hate to say that, it's SAD BUT TRUE

I would like Metallica except for the fact that thier music sucks now and I have a rule about not liking bands whose music sucks. Plus they were arrogant assholes to J. Newsted and I have another rule about not patronizing arrogant assholes if I can possibly avoid doing so. Finally, they are against filesharing, and as a deadhead who whose fave band freely encouraged bootlegged recordings and sharing music, and as a musician who has music composed by myself free to share to the world, and a former Napster user, I say that Metallica can fucking blow me. What a couple of idiotic clowns they are.

All of metallica's music up until reload (this includes reload) was great.

Now, sadly, the metallica we once knew, is no more.

I love Metallica...easily my favorite band. The old stuff and the new, it's all good (yes, even the Loads). St. Anger has some great tracks on it, but not their best effort...looking forward to seeing their new bassist Rob Trujillo record with them on the next one (their producer Bob Rock played bass on St. Anger). The whole Napster issue is so tired...Lars stood up for what he thought was right concerning his music, but he's essentially washed his hands of it and moved on, but it seems like most filesharers never will as they are still bitter about it...which is fine, but if you were once a fan and stopped listening to Metallica because of Napster's demise, that's pretty sad.

Mandatory Metallica!! :devil

I got into Metallica back in the mid-80's and saw them at their first "Big Gig," the Monsters of Rock Tour where they opened for Dokken, Scopions and Van Hagar. I did not stop listening to Metallica because of Napster--I stopped listening to them because the last original album they put out was And Justice For All. They were truly onto something at one time, but dropped the ball to get on the radio. True metal bands like Slayer or Kreator never "sold their soul" like Metallica did in search of the almighty buck. The Napster debacle was just a clearcut picture of how money-grubbing they had become. Now they are just pathetic caricatures of rock stars. It's too bad.

In case you don't know (which I'm sure you do), Linkin Park and Evanescence are two of the biggest bands in the world ATM.

Personally, I liked Load and Reload. They moved away from the 80s, into a different style. Then, people thought it sucked. Now, many like it. It is possible that the same will happen with the current change.

I never really liked metallica, I sorta got into thier music back in 96, but once again lost interest.

When they killed napster, That pissed me off.
And after hearing the Ja Rule + Metallica track, and St Anger, they are total corporate sellouts/

They went from heavy metal, to just another rock band using overplayed sound.

And linkin park blows. Thier new CD was pathetic.
and its sad when Evanescence is out there trying to clone Linkin park.

Well, see, that's what I thought. But, I was watching MTV2 a while ago and saw a recording of them playing at Germany's Rock AM Ring festival. The first song they played was For Whom the Bell Tolls, so I was jumping around pretending to be Kirk, and that really rocked. Then, they played Frantic, the first song on the new album. I was just about to switch over but decided to listen anyway. And, I'll be honest, it was brilliant! Hetfield just put so much more energy into it than he did on the studio version, it was amazing. The guitar was better, the vocals were better, everything was how it should be.

Up until then, I'd hated St. Anger. Now, it's beginning to grow on me.

St.Anger on CD is, well crap! I saw some bits of their show(s?) in Spain and it sounds a lot better live, the drums are not as 'Tinny' and Hetfields voice seems to have improves. I think he sounds awful on the album, i can't remember who said it on a different thread but they said he sounded like he swallowed a big cock.

Well, look what the cat dragged in..

1st of all, I said "the greatest metal band SINCE Black Sabbath". Read it right...and I stand by it.

2nd, I think Nas answered your question about Evanescence and Linkin Park.

3rd, I was talking about "mainstream" radio"...I´ve been listening to metal on "god-forsaken-2a.m.-radioshows" ever since I was 15 years old. So go patronize someone else.

I saw Metallica live for the 3rd time in 10 years, in Spain, and THEY ROCKED! They are now playing the old stuff like "Hit The Lights" and "Fight Fire With Fire" with the same power as in 1984 or 85. So shut it...I know what I saw.

Either way, discussing musical taste is stupid. I love heavy rock and even old-school metal, while at the same time I´m DJíng and producing electronic tracks in Ableton Live, Reason and Project5. What´s the fuss all about?

John W. Lindh

Metallica did make one or two heavy metal albums, but they never really were a great metal band. Their greatest achievement was inventing metal pop and bands like Linkin Park are their worthy successors.

Calling them the greatest metal band since Black Sabbath is just plain stupid and leaves out many other important bands, like Judas Priest, ACDC, Iron Maiden to name a few of the more popular ones who might not have reached the mainstream to the degree Metallica did but whose music was at least as original.

WhitePony
July 13th, 2003, 06:27 PM
"just plain stupid"...ok....

Listen, dude, thats your opinion and I´ll stick with mine.
I was really happy that Judas Priest decided to reunite, this week..."Painkiller" and "Breaking The Law" are still 2 of the greatest metal songs ever written.
And Iron Maiden played here on the 5th of July, I saw them, and they SUCKED!
As for AC/DC, great band, but really, all they can do is variations on 2 or 3 basic songs...which are great, by the way...

Listen, we can sit here all day and night discussing METAL, but it´s of no use...I´ve been a metal fan since 13 years old (1985), so it´s useless to think that you are teaching me something.
My final opinion is that every Metallica album since the Black Album sucks, but they still can cut it live and they are the most important metal band since Sabbath...with Maiden a close 3rd.

Good evening...

Music like so many things is subjective and you really cannot argue with a persons taste or apreciation or non-apreciation.

What a person likes is not something you can argue or discuss them out of and insulting them for their tastes is nonsense.

So suck threads are stupid!

I feel like closing but won't as for the most part everyone is behaving lol

It's funny how people have said that Metallica have sold out with each CD they made.

First, they 'sold out' when they made Kill 'em all, because 'real underground' bands don't come out with a 'real' CD, just demos and promotionals.

Then, they 'sold out' with Ride the Lightning because they wrote a ballad, known as 'Fade to Black.' (One of my personal favorites, I might add.)

With Master of Puppets, no one really bickered. Thank God.

Then came ...And Justice for All. They made a video for 'One.' Damn sell-outs.

Next? The Black Album. With 'Nothing Else Matters.' Sell-outs.

Load and Reload? Cut their hair. Sell-outs.

Garage, Inc. Just covers and no original music? Sell-outs.

S&M. A whole album played with a symphony? Sell-outs.

St. Anger? A bunch of out of tune instruments? Sell-outs.

You see how this goes? They have been called sell-outs with just about every album. Funny thing is, a few years after everything is settled, people always say, wow that album was fucking awesome!

Why all the push on Metallica? Ozzy for the love of fuck has his own tv show??? On MTV? Why isn't he a sell-out? His music has changed. But for some reason he isn't a sell-out. People can be so stupid sometimes. Just because a band changes, doesn't mean they are sell-outs. If they hadn't changed and kept creating the same old music, it would have gotten old. Where are all the bands of the 70s and 80s that haven't changed their style?? They are LONG GONE. Because you have to change. Master of Puppets is what it is, because it is unique. If every album they made was a Master of Puppets, people would say that they suck because they don't change and are stuck on only one sound.

unless you are humping one of the band members or you came from the same womb as one of them, do us all a favor and STFU about selling out, I love to hear people judging other people for stuff that they know absolutely nothing about, quite simply if you don't like it, pick up an instrument and make something yourself
