Do not call list and proposed anti spam bills: will they work?

With the national do not call list getting lots of requests and more anti-spam legislation heading through congress, does this mean the end to telephone and internet annoyances as we know it, or will the people/companies that do these things find a way around?

first of all i hate spam! it screws up my computer! i was checking my email the other day and my lil cousin walks in! hes only 7 and hes like what is that (nice lolita babes sucking big black d****) and i was embarrased to tell him wut it waz! it would be kew if i could block all the spam i ever get/got in my email!:shy :fire :hole :wings

The "Do Not Call" will only be about 8% effective. Besides, the "annoying" calls are the ones from bill collecters and things you would already be affiliated with. Very few are just random solicitations.

As for SPAM, only SPAM not affiliated with MS, Yahoo, etc will be affected. If these compaines are supplying some $ in one form or another to the big names, they will "magicly" end up in your inbox.

You can block the more obvious ones with a spam blocker for Outlook. Its just the spammers are getting better and more clever at disguising the messages.

I get plenty of random solicitations especially from companies offering services for the home. I also wonder what will fall under the category "charity". I have been called many times by this charity claiming to help widows of firefighters, but are now being investigated by the state. Does anybody know how much the do not call list is going to cost the taxpayers.

if you want real protection, get caller id and a spam filter.

i am on a modem, on the only fone line in our house. so when we get an incoming call, it gets forwarded to this place, www.callwave.com and we use their little app and we can get a message from people. and we paid for caller id, among other things.

you wouldn't imagine how many telemarketers use blocked numbers, or straight 1-800 numbers.

and for spam, spend $30 and get one of those spam filters... mail (osx) has one built-in (free) but you hafta have mac. god forbid.

Yeah they will work. States have had do not call lists but made you pay a fee to register on it(at least the one in FL did).

Those companies are going to "get around" by calling people more who arent on the lists and by sending more junk snail mail.

I hope that something gets done to stop spam mail which has gotten way out of control. That theres nothing that could be done to prevent it all because of people in other countries who would still be sending spam mail but anything to cut it down and make it harder is better than nothing.

hmm... i heard wil speculation on the usps losing like, $6 billion a year... so now that we will have more junk mail, maybe the usps will start bringing in $6 billion a year.

I bought "Ihatespam" for outlook and i'm glad I did, it does a great job, very few false posatives!

Lets see..... we only get the political calls once every four years or so, or when there's a really desperate toss up election for representative or something like that
Charities seem to like my home number. Association for the blind, association for the mentally retarded, they like us alot, they want used cars, they want volunteer time, they want $$$$$$$. even though we don't donate to them (hey, we're not greedy people, we donate every now and then to the salvation army and to various food shelters for drives) they still call us.
Telephone surveys. Don't get them for some reason.
Though the lack of surveys is more than made up for in the insurance comps trying for our cash. may goddamn progressive insurance. my mom got hit by a progressive policy holder and now they want her to join over.

LoL I know what you mean, except the person that walked in wasn't a little kid, and it wasn't like I was looking at it, this was when I was on 56k so it takes sometime to go back, and it was just sitting there hanging....

The spam is a pain in the ass, i get around 10 spam emails per day which is kinda bad. I think it is time to get some spam filters.
