During my 3 days at my cousins house, I downloaded a shit load of movies. One of which I am trying now and it is not playing correctly for some reason.

It seems to play sound alright but past the first frame I am getting no video. I've tried playing it in a few different players to no avail and now I am here asking for some help. With some assistance provided by grab, I have checked to see if I had the proper codecs installed to play the movie and as you will see I do.

Misc info -
File size - 1.52 gigs
File extension - .avi
OS - Win2k

Could it be a badly installed codec or maybe the file is messed up ? Like always, any help would be appreciated.

Moonman, did you try avipreview just to see if the vid part of the movie is intact? http://www.avipreview.com/avipreview.htm

Sorry, I know this isn't the fix your looking for but start with that and see. I have had a rash of movies like this recently that ONLY avipreview can play. But at least you can find out if the movie is complete. You might try the forums at http://www.dvdrhelp.com
also. They get many more of these divx type questions. I remember there was a patch/fix program for divx movies that was listed there but I don't recall what exactly it fixed.

Have you tried DivFix..stripping & rebuilding the Index?

I've just now tried the movie in avipreview with the same outcome. Not a single frame past the first. I'm checking out http://www.dvdrhelp.com as I type this.

I'm interested to know where to get DivFix. Please tell me more lion.

It may be your DirectShow filter Moony, I use the FFDSHOW alpha from Sourceforge.

Im pretty sure that you dont have the right decompresor yet, not a problem with the movie.

I think I know what movie ur trying to play. It works fine for me.

However, I do see a problem with ur render. The subtitle mixer result indicates some kind of conflict with your codecs or possibly a bug in the version of the codec u are using. Also, I noticed u have a divxg400 anti-freeze dll, u should get rid of that, its rather pointless and could be the problem.

I would try uninstalling all ur downloaded codecs, just completely wipe them out. Krell was on the right track. I direct u to the following, a list of all the versions of ffdshow, a filter which is compatible with divx 3/4/5 and xvid as well as legacy mp4. Download the alpha version, as it has the latest fixes, and install it after deleting ur codecs. (Latest alpha is highlighted in pink, the exe binary)

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&release_id=161224

Do this and tell us how it goes.

Krell and neoufo51 I both greatly appreciate your help. Not only did your directions work like a charm, but now my movies take about half as long to load up! (go figure.)

Seriously, thank you. :gj :gj :gj :gj :gj

Thanks for that, I appreciate it. The problem was I couldn't find the right file at sourceforge, so neoufo51's post was just what I needed (since he provided a link).

Its not a codec pack, but rather is sophisticated open source directshow filter that is compatible with divx 3/4/5 and xvid (also, soon to be with mpeg2 and 1) It's a filter, not a codec, so it allows only for playback and not encoding to those formats. However, its 30% faster than using a codec to playback on ur machine, and it includes a variety of postprocessing algorithms and video adjusting filters to help improve the quality of ur video. I LOVE it.

Moonman, if u have a fast PC, go to the configuration settings and turn on "postprocessing" and turn it up to full throttle, and check off "Auto Quality Control" You will get a great image, especially with the Xvid encoded movies out there.

PS. Just out of curiousity, ur movie didnt happen to be the one with Ripley going back to the home planet, was it?
