I am known amoung my freinds to be a very paranoid person, which is why I am posting here. :) I got online this afternoon to download a video from Kazaa Lite and I wasn't on very long, but when I came back to the computer I noticed someone had uploaded a song from me. I am afraid that the person could have been tied in with the RIAA.

The only kind of songs I have downloaded or had in my shared folder were songs that were live, either from concerts or tv, none were from actual cds, and most of them were videos. I only had 19 files in there.

So I just need someone to tell me I am safe :) Also, is there a log that you can access somewhere within Kazaa Lite that records what your download and who has downloaded from you?

Thanks,
Emma

You're safe. I've shared well over a hundred gigs of videos and music for quite some time and never been caught. They don't care about 19 songs, especially live recordings. They have bigger fish to fry.

I don't mean to sound "awful", but why do you think the person is tied in with the RIAA?

As TFO said, they have bigger fish to fry.

but....notbob....he's ok! Yes, I guess he is. But he would scare somebody as nervous as that girl seems to be! You kind of have to get used to his brand of humor.

This is a bad time for someone to just be getting started in file-sharing. Those of us tha thave been at it for a while have seen the various threats come and go. And I think that this one will blow over too. But it is a scary climate for someone who has not seen any of this before. It will be all right eventually.

it tells me you think all will be ok....but....not for a long time!

DO you really think it will be that long? ES5's technology sounds promicing and Freenet is moving along. I don't think the major threat is here for very long, maybe 6 months, when there will be more backlash against the RIAA.

you'll be fine. live recordings i dont think are copyrighted (unless there is a cd from the artist called "hey, listen to these LIVE songs!")... so don't worry about it.

oh lordy, looks like we have another es5 fanboy (aaron73153)... at least, he's getting there.

It's alright, the RIAA would look ridiculous trying to bust someone with 19 files, and yes don't be scraed I have been sharing since the summer of 1999 and I have never got caught or have gotten any letter/warning.

that word you used "eventually" is a "trigger" word to me.... Sorry, it wasn't meant to be. Just my way of saying sooner or later. I don't personally believe it's going to be a long time. These RIAA goons will see the futility of this. Probably after the first round of suits. If there is ever any in the first place. This all may just be a scare tactic. It's been said before in these forums, sueing(sp?) your target customers is not a good way to stay in business. So excuse my French, but :finger 'em!!!

thanks guys :) You've all made me feel a lot better about it. I was just so paranoid about it and I wanted to hear that I had nothing to worry about from people that were better informed about it than myself.

I really appreciate everyone's replies :)

well now you understand what i mean by "trigger" words :) Well sure I do! We all have them to some degree. One of mine is somebody starting a conversation by saying "Why didn't you.............". Way to negative for me.

rainbowdemon
July 5th, 2003, 07:03 PM
the words i usually here is "well can't ya just........". Same thing, pretty much. It's the negativity that gets irritating. I try to be as positive as I can. Does not always work, however. But mostly.

rainbowdemon..... That is the title of a song by a band from the early 70's. They were called Uriah Heep. In highschool they were my favorite band. I still like them a lot.

rainbowdemon
July 5th, 2003, 07:28 PM
we are makeing this thread the new spam thread lol And I'm enjoying every minute of it! You should d/l some Heep. They were very good. The album this song is from is called "Demons And Wizards". But bear in mind that I saw your real picture in the family album thread. I think that the early 70's was just a little before your time!! LOL

rainbowdemon

thats a different story....but...lets just say...i know alot about the 60's...but...i also know alot about wwII germany....but...i wasnt there LOL Good point! I graduated in '74, so the music of the '70's is basically my favorite. But I'm not totally stuck in the past. A lot of the new music is good too.

I share about 250 audio files on WinMX - how worried should I be?

Also, a relative of mine uses kazaalite, shares about 100 files, and got a warning message. Should he disable sharing?

cheapprick
July 6th, 2003, 10:14 PM
Was the warning message from a fellow user or from his ISP?

If it was another user, I'd just disable messages in KL.
If it was from his ISP, then he has some thinking to do.

MVDU
July 6th, 2003, 10:18 PM
It seemed to be one of those RIAA ones that they're sending out. I'm surprised he got one, only sharing 100 files.

cheapprick
July 6th, 2003, 10:23 PM
Yeah, but for all I know it's a hundred album wraps. If it's individual files it's not that surprising, those are sent by a bot, which is searching out specific files. Your relative would probably be fine just disabling messages.

However, you should consider that legal advice about as much as you should propose to Mariah Carey. It looks okay, but there is a time and place to decide where you stand.

MVDU
July 6th, 2003, 10:53 PM
Yes, it's individual files that sometimes make up an album collectively. The bad thing is that now the RIAA has taken note of him if they want to send a message by going after a few smaller people. Chances are still slim, though, don't you think?

Crashdowngurl

When the RIAA people are catching people on Kazaa are they sending warning messages or any kind of way to let you know that you have been noticed sharing files?

I dont know, the major case of people getting caught was the college kids on DC running their hub.

But if you get the usual bot message from Kazaa, dont worry about it, those are common.

If you get a diff message threatening legal action, look it over to make sure its real, then consider your options.

Real means they give you contact information on how to talk and then maybe in a few hours, days, weeks, or months, your ISP will ask you about it.

Crashdowngurl
July 9th, 2003, 06:56 PM
so they are warning you before they actually go forward with any legal action? So you would have a chance to clear you system off or whatnot?

I almost cant believe you asked that. First of all if you get this paranoid, DISABLE SHARING and secondly its one friggin song

As far as I know, to date, the warning messages and the cases the RIAA are supposedly preparing have nothing to do with each other. The warning messages are a tactic they started about two months ago to scare people from using Kazzaa. They were randomly sent to users specifically looking for certain files. The cases they are preparing, to the best of my knowledge, have to do with big sharers of mp3s meaning if you share gigs and gigs, then you may or may not have something to worry about.

you are perfectly fine! a few weeks ago i was sharing over 273 gigs until i reinstall my linux os! i neva got caught doin anything! also if you wanna be even more protected and have ur ip bounced around, go to http://www.methlabs.org/ and download peerguardian! it will bounce ur ip address around so that the fuckin government forces won't be able to catch you!

Those four college kids are crazy, who would download from school? I know school is boring and all, but i mean that's what home sweet home is for.

In my cisco networking class, if you download kazaa and the teach sees it, you better have a computer that hauls ass to uninstall it quick, lol.
