Hi
If you are an experienced dial up surfer, can u aid with my maximum tweaking aim of my internet connection over Windows XP ??? - The shot below is taken from that program which i use (System Mehanic)
Kindly i 'd like to know the best value for the " Specify Support for TCP large windows" in the first parameter in the top of the page and also 'd like to know if 3 or 10 is better than the other in the second parameter "Fast retransmission and recovery support" - THANK U

The broad answer is . . . you shouldnt be messing with the setting is XP at all. 56K is 56K . . . and your not going to get gold from a turnip.
Now, alledging that . . . under certain conditions, you may be able to optimise a slight bit more . . . which I doubt, no one knows WHAT 1 or 3 or 10 IS in that software? Did you read the instructions . . . that little HELP icon ?
Now pretend that there are a lot of people that claim to be tcp/ip experts around here, which there are, even their opinions will vary. ALL of these so called tweak softwares can change your TTL = Time To Live, and your MTU, and "possibly" make ever so slight improvements, or can just mess you up worse than you already were.
XP doesnt really need you help. But if you want to try to compare apples to apples, then run some tests at dslreports.com, and at speedguide.net > Broadband > Broadband Tools > TCP\IP Analyzer.
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
http://www.speedguide.net
As you make changes and reboot, retry your download tests and reanalyze, see if you can determine real improvements.
Oh . . . and since I have no idea what the transmit\retransmit expiration value is . . . Im pretty sure most others here dont either, so click repetitiously thru these pages and see if you can make sense of it.

I agree with you on that one. I tried a similar prog a while back. I saw no noticable change. 56k is 56k. These type of progs advertise 300% improvement. This is pure B.S.

the only thing you can really tweak that has any effect that i have noticed is the MTU.
Now i don't know about XP but in 98 you have to do it through the registry.

As Krell says, messing with these options is likly to be unproductive.
Surfing will usually be limited by the amount of data you can get
down a 56K. A programs that prevents adverts being downloaded would
proabably have more effect.
The dslreport or speedguide test may not excercise these options
at all.
The top option is only likly to be used when you are
receiving data from a host on the other side of the world.
(Long transmission latency)
>i 'd like to know the best value for the "Specify Support for

For 56K I'd say large window support turned off but thats a
just a guess.
I suspect the second option will only have an effect when you are
sending data to another host and packets are getting lost
on the way.
XP sets an inital TTL value of 128 by default so packets will
fall off the edge of the internet long before it's exceeded.
95/98/ME uses 32. I'v seen a website be inacessable with
95/98/ME because it was more than 32 hops away but it was just
because the ISP had lost a backbone and the traffic was going
through about ten more hops than normal.

I am so glad that i am off dial-up internet. my suggestion that if you want faster internet, high-speed is the only way to go. and if it's not in your area, like me, then get satellite, and you can get it for as low as $49/month and it's 3x faster than dsl they claim
