Of course, the best Xvid/DivX encoder there is, AutoGK: http://www.autogk.me.uk/
Registry Cleaner that's out of this world, JV16 Powertools (It is worth it to buy this, it's way batter than SystemMechanic, Norton WinDoctor, etc: http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/
If you don't feel like paying for Microsoft Office, you can get OpenOffice, it's free counterpart: http://www.openoffice.org/
Don't have the money for quickbooks? No problem: http://www.turbocashuk.com/accounting-software-download.html
An alternate to Norton Ghost for imaging hard drives, DriveImage XML: http://www.runtime.org/downloads.htm
Alternate to WinRar and WinZIP, ZipGenius: http://www.zipgenius.it/eng/?page_id=12
Awesome free 3D graphics creation tool that is an alternate to Swift3D and Maya:http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/
Someone before me mentioned Darik's Boot and Nuke, and I have posted a link for anyone that wants it: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61951&package_id=58479&release_id=439240
If you have ever wanted to remote control your computer from far away or at work, here is very useful free software alt, TightVNC: http://www.tightvnc.com/
Now here's something interesting: a program that downloads websites so that you can view them offline. I have used it a couple of times and it really has astounded me: http://www.httrack.com/
Best online malware scanner that has ever existed is Jotti's. You can upload any file you have downloaded and his site will scan it with at least 10 different virus scanners: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
This last one does cost money, but it is probably the most worth product here. Of course, it's Stardocks WindowBlinds. It lets you completely customize the Windows Scheme into basically anything you want. I simply love this program, plus there are a ton of cool downloads that you can get: http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/

Imgburn for iso files
ImgBurn is the best burning software. It's small, it's fast and it can do anything except direct DVD/CD copy.

May 7th, 2007, 02:42 PM
yes, imgburn is the best software out there for burning iso images and now with the build function anything onto a ccd or dvd. nero is great when it comes to one to one copies of cds or dvds and burning audio cds as well, although i recommend nero lite which removes all the bloat in nero making it only 10 mb!

My vote is for Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html). If you haven't messed with it yet, it is a really nice open source app for photo editing and image manipulation. It is more user friendly that GIMP, imho, but does require Microsoft's .NET 2.0 to run.

Tired of reaching for your volume knob every time your mp3 player changes to a new song?
MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume.
MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear.
Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

Every once in awhile I like to repost this: Start up monitor http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
Its a must for everyone. If you instal alot of programs you simply have to get this. It will keep your PC running fast. Most all programs like to add themselves to start up so that when you go to click on that program again, it fires right up and you think its a fast, smooth program when actually its running all the damn time, slowing your pc start up down and eating up memory.
Instal this TODAY! It will let you know when a program tries to add itself to start up reg and will ask you if you want it to allow them to do so. Always pick NO!

This is the best thread ever at ZP. Everytime I post in it I have to bring up "start up monitor" as I have all my friends download that. It saves me the trouble of having to come over and "fix" their slow running PC. Why does every single program have to try and run itslef at startup? I know the answer but still....... its such a stupid thing to do.

Sandboxie traps cached browser items into the sandbox as a by-product of normal operation, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well.

Wow, being an IT consultant, my recommendations are vast. To start, either ImgBurn or CDBurnerXP to burn cds/dvds etc. Both are free, and actually come close to beating older versions of Nero in functionality etc. As far as the newest version of Nero (ver 8), they definitely beat that bloated POS. MWSnap for screen caotures. CutePDF Writer for instant printing to PDF format. Foxit PDF reader for reading PDFs (it's 2MB vs. Acrobat Reader's bloated 28MB, opens instantly vs waiting forever for Acrobat, it's portable and the list goes on and on ...), 7zip or IZArc for compression/decompression, Unlocker to battle those annoying "can't delete this file 'cause it's in use" etc., BulkRename Utility to quickly rename lots of files at once, Comodo firewall, which actually beats alot of purchased firewalls in performance, Avira or ClamWin for Anti-Virus, Foobar 2000 or VLC for playing ALL types of media files, uTorrent or Azureus for torrents.... more later ... Auslogics BoostSpeed v4
Start programs faster. Speed up computer start time. Increase Internet speed,
optimize your Internet Explorer, Firefox and E-mail programs.
Boost Speed will clean up disks and the Registry to speed up your computer and
tweak Windows to its peak performance.
The Remedy For a Slow Computer
This is so typical. We buy a new PC and soon it slows down to a crawl. Sometimes
we just expect too much perhaps. But all too often, the computer is really running
slow.
Why? Remnants of programs you once installed are now clogging the memory and disks.
The Windows Registry is filled with junk and rarely defragmented. To top it all,
Windows runs services you don't need.
Luckily for us, computer owners, most of these problems can be reversed. Auslogics
BoostSpeed can speed up your computer by cleaning up and defragmenting disks and
the Registry, removing bloated software, and applying performance tweaks.
So, How Much Faster Can A Slow Computer Become?
We tested BoostSpeed on a 2-year old notebook to see how the program can speed up a
laptop. Tests with WinBench software show 10%-100% improvement to overall laptop
performance after all the clean up has been done (click on the picture to see the
results).
As you can see, Internet speed was greatly increased using several techniques. Memory
usage, computer start up and shutdown speed, opening a Word document - all went
noticeably faster than before optimization. Results vary on different computers and
some people report "unbelievable results", while others simply use the program for
daily computer maintenance.
Is It Worth The Money?
It's simple. To get a technician to look at your computer will easily cost you some
where in the neighbourhood of $50 to $100 per hour or more. And that’s before any repairs.
Now, when you optimize your computer you save approximately 10 to 30 minutes a day.
This means that, in just a few days, the program will have saved you more money than
what you had spent on the purchase of the program.
To top it all off, it's a one-stop program to keep your computer healthy and error-free,
plus get rid of most annoyances.
FEATURES SHORT VIEW
BoostSpeed Integrator
BoostSpeed Integrator provides you with computer optimization and security summary,
prompting you to take actions when needed. Use Tasks menu on the left to launch
various BoostSpeed tools to clean-up, optimize and secure your computer.
Disk Defrag
A new and improved version of Disk Defrag is now part of Auslogics BoostSpeed. You
don't need to have Disk Defrag installed as a separate program anymore. Simply
download and install new Auslogics BoostSpeed 4 and enjoy an integrated version of
Disk Defrag on your computer.
Speed Up Internet
Internet Optimization wizard is now easier to use, provides more information and is
more powerful than before. Unlike other similar programs, Auslogics Internet
Optimizer will first test your connection settings before applying any changes.
One-Button Checkup
If you don't have time to go through many tools in Auslogics BoostSpeed, but need a
quick fix of major problems, use One-Button Checkup instead. This safe and fast
program will clean and optimize your disk and the registry, as well as protect your
computer.
Disk Cleaner
Disk Cleaner, Registry Cleaner and Track Eraser are all built to scan and clean your
computer, removing junk files, broken registry keys and sensitive information. Novice
users will find them easy to use, and power users will be delighted by the amount of
customization available.
Uninstall Manager
The new version features greatly improved Uninstall and Startup Managers. Both can be
used to improve your computer performance. Both have an edge over standard Windows
tools and competitors by rating your software and giving you a Vista-style quick search.
Tweak Manager
You can speed up, optimize and customize your computer, web browser, e-mail client and
IM software using our award-winning Auslogics Tweak Manager. It allows you to search for
tweaks, to see tweak rating (telling you how much effect a tweak has on your computer
performance).

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Free and flexible music editing program. Works with the lame encoder to export sound files as mp3, wav, or Ogg Vorbis. Very useful to edit long uninterrupted internet radio streams ripped using the following app -
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Streamripper: http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/
Used in conjunction with Winamp allows any user to record a net radio stream to an mp3 file.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
DFX plugin: http://www.fxsound.com/dfx/pages/download/index.php
I use it with Winamp, the quality difference is huge assuming you have a decent sound card. No reason to pay for this program...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Irfanview: http://www.irfanview.com/
"IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista."
Used in conjunction with http://www.software.com/irfanview-plugin allows any user to view and edit just about any image format there is including even playing audio files such as Ogg Vorbis.
Includes a slide-show plug-in linked to your picture folders which can be used in place of a screensaver, which is cool.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
K-Lite Codec Pack: http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm
Got a bizarre movie file that doesn't want to play? Then get this, uses Media Player Classic with a gazillion codecs to play w/e movies you might find floating around in the dark waters.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
VLC Media PLayer: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
THE player you need for anything video, also plays lossless FLAC audio. So many options I'm not going into it; check out the site. Anything this won't play then K-Lite Codec Pack will.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Using Itunes 7.5.0 or below?
Then get myfairtunes: http://www.majorgeeks.com/myFairTunes_d5812.html
Which removes DRM protection and converts all those paid for songs to freely distributable Mp3 files :)

Startup Monitor does what SystemSafetyMonitor does. It's Startup Control Panel which is like msconfig. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml But even that program is useful because you can drag and drop shortcuts into the startup- eg defragging next time you boot.
I always like to bump Napho posts for the new peeps here.
Startupmonitor is a must for people who install lots of programs and are concerned about their PC's performance
Startup Control Panel also makes it easy to get rid of all those programs that are slowing down your PC. Get em both!

Not sure if these have been mentioned already, but here goes:
DVD Decrypter - after all these years, I find it still the fastest, most convenient, and most reliable DVD ripper and burner. Can only burn image files, though.
AutoGK - a package for encoding ripped DVD's into avi's using xvid (or maybe others codecs as well, not sure.. never tried others)
Unlocker - unlocks a file from whatever windows process is using it, so now you can delete or move the file/folder
foobar2000 - a very low-overhead, yet extremely customizable audio player for windows
KMPlayer - a great alternative to VLC. Another honorable mention is GomPlayer.
IceChat - excellent alternative to mIRC
CDex - a 'minimalist-interface' CD ripper with freedb support. Much friendlier than EAC and others..
Pop Peeper - logs into your e-mail accounts, like yahoomail, gmail, hotmail, or even Pop3 and let's you read/delete/etc your e-mails.
FastStone Image viewer - has a verrrry slick interface and great performance. A great alternative to Irfanview, especially if you want to browse many directories at once
Mp3Tag - amazingly useful app for managing your mp3 files

FTP Rush, the best FTP app out there. Great for people like me who use FTP sites as their main source of warez. Lot's of custom commands, can have the interface customized to whatever you want, and has no rivals when it comes to multi-thread transfers. Seriously, it fooking rules!

I like Net Meter. It's a freeware Bandwidth monitoring app. It's lightweight, and it just plain old works. I use it so I never go over my 250gb Comcast cap.
You can get it here:

Need to quickly add up a few numbers and don't want to go hunting for your desk calculator (which, for some reason, never actually IS on your desk)? Windows comes with a calculator tool that can satisfy most peoples' needs. Here are two ways to start the calculator tool:
1. Click on the "Start" button, choose "All Programs", "Accessories", then "Calculator".
2. Press WINDOWS+R, type in "calc" (without quotes), and press ENTER.
From here you can perform basic math functions just by typing them into the calculator window. You can click on buttons to perform actions, or just press the '+' key on your keyboard to add, the '=' key to get the results, etc.
BTW: Some modern keyboards come built-in with a special button to start this tool! If you are in the market for a new keyboard, check for this feature.

Every since Napho turned me on to KMPlayer its almost all I use. It comes with its own codecs like VLC. It uses little resources, has some options that are really neat that other players don't have (it also has a few missing as well) and makes playing High Definitions videos possible even on old computers. I know I rave too much about this player but I think its highly under rated so I took it under my wing to fanboi it. Download Link (http://download.cnet.com/The-KMPlayer/3000-13632_4-10659939.html)
I like how it tells you what codec its using for video and sound right under the vid box.
http://www.sizzledcore.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/kmplayer_894.jpg
Skins available too.
*** I have also talked much about a feature this player has that allows the watcher to speed up the video to watch the movie faster and has a tone synthesizer built in that keeps the voices sounding normal no matter how fast you watch the movie. Once you get really fast it starts sounding all computer generated but there is no way you could watch a movie that fast anywho. Its easy to cut 10 to 15 minutes off a movie without even noticing its been sped up. Love that feature!

Sometimes the KMPlayer's default internal codecs/filters leave a little to be desired. You can easily change to a different codec -eg the Gabest filter plays all flv files, the KMP one doesn't. I don't want Mels to promote this player and have it mess up and draw him derision and vindictive from bitter, heartless internet tough guys. :devil2

I don't know if there was some setting I didn't have right, but the fast-play option didn't work very well at all for me. It WORKED, but compared to the PSP's ability to do the same thing, it was a pale comparison.

Not sure if this has been already discussed but if there was an issue in deciphering a codec of a multimedia file, GSpot is one great utility.

Did you check the "TONE" control button? If you do not have that option checked it will not work right. Other than that I don't see what could go wrong.

Wow, month late.
I can't remember, but I remember fiddling around with it a bit, and I do remember messing with some tone options. People weren't talking high-pitched, but it was really quiet. It was one of those background volume<->foreground volume reversal issues. I was trying to watch the 70's show, and I couldn't hear a damn thing.
