ya know, seeing all the kids running around with 500 line long sigs posting 2 word replies, i hafta ask...
should we limit the size of sigs?

It would be nice if some of them would just accept a hint. Setting limits shouldn't be necessary.

if you don't want to see the sigs, you can turn them off.

People dont accept Hints, and some of it is really getting obnoxious.
We have discussed this in the hub, and tried not to legislate it, except for the ones that obviously arent acceptable.
My pick isnt as large as some, but I will gladly lose it if we can knock off some of the nonsense. I think we need to set some standard or generally accepted rule of thumb for lines, pic size, and content.
Turning off sigs may afford some individual control, but it's really just putting a bandaid over the real problem.

From the k-lite.tk forums...
Signatures will be restricted in size and content. Signatures may not excede a 495x150 pixel area, this includes all images and text used. The total file size for all images contained in a signature may not excede 100,000 bytes. Signatures that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.
Granted they allow avatars up to 80x80 pixels (used to be 64), so they do things a little smaller to conserver bandwidth, but all you really see is the post, which is really nice. You can still have multiple images or text links in your sig though. Overall it creates a very clean look.
I'd say these dimensions are reasonable...here is 495x150 pixels if you're curious how big that is. That doesn't have to be a final, but I think we should find something in this size range
EDIT: Forgot about the white background here, I revised it to make it more clear how big that is. Its a pixel off on both sides for you smart asses btw

lol, i dont mind sigs that are pics, like phalkons (in fact, the dilbert strip today is hilarious) or krell's... just all the text, you actually almost wanna read it all. lol. also, i can get past krell's pic with 3 clicks of my scroll wheel. it takes at least 456159451365 clicks to get past romantic guy 50's, for example.

I'd go with a MAX of 200 for height and like 300/400 for width.
I'd prefer all sigs (images) to be around the size of mine as it won't screw anyone up...even if they're browsing ZP at 640x480. And a few lines of text along with your 'banner/signature' image if you want one.
I must agree....Romantic's signature is fucking insane...almost as bad as that one with a shitload of Eminem lyrics....

I would just set limits on picture sizes, and have unlimited text, if that is possible.
Most long signatures are made up of images, not text.
To be honest, while I wouldn't mind change, I'm so used to it that it doesnt bother me anymore.

Long sigs dopn't bother me either, only when it is an entire page that fills up the screen does it annoy me

I think what bothers me the most is when people put dividers in their sigs
--------------------------
like this
--------------------------
that way you can't tell when their post ends and when their sig starts
------------------------------------
Anoyed yet?
-------------------
Remind you of anybody?
Honestly, I think we should have a text limit, and a picture limit.
Ten lines sound fine for text?
----------------------------------------
This is 500x200 pixels, I'd say that would be a good max, what do you guys think?

To me the long (and I mean the really long ones) text sigs are more annoying that pic sigs, but that just me.
However, if there is majority decision to go smaller, I don't mind reducing my sig size on sig pics (not too small though, lol) too much.

If I was the type to get annoyed, some of them could possible get on my nerves just a bit.
I would like to think a bit of consideration and common sense could be used by the members. I don't like to see more rules have to be added. That just makes more work for the people who look after the forums.
Just my opinion.

Ok, how about what the poll says then yes, to 5 (or so) lines
A lot of people list what programs they use...thats why I was thinking more. Maybe make it so if you have more than five lines, you have to make it small text
cpugeniusmv
July 3rd, 2003, 10:43 AM
or if someone could figure out a way to do tables in sigs, then we could use up horizontal space rather than vertical.
The best way to do that now is to make an image, and list the p2p apps you use in rows/columns
It just takes less space.
Krell
July 3rd, 2003, 10:50 AM
Yours is acceptable, but if thats the case, then ONE object and ONE line.
Not ONE object and 5 lines.
This place is starting to look like the billboards along the roadside where car dealerships are.
phalkon30
July 3rd, 2003, 11:09 AM
Ok then krell, what you're suggesting, my sig would be against that right?
I have no problem removing some stuff, like dilbert, in place of a text/banner (I doubt many of you find it funny anyway)
As for dimensions, possibly 500x500? I noticed a lot of people have more vertical space than horizontal, and 500x200 or whatever would outlaw a lot of sigs.
Krell
July 3rd, 2003, 11:24 AM
Your current one isnt using up a ton of space, (well sort of) but if there isnt a maximum that cant be exceeded, we will be right back where we are with this.
Have 3 pictures and 10 fanboy lines is whats obnoxious.
cheapprick
July 3rd, 2003, 11:25 AM
How about the size of about 5 lines of text, 7 if you use this size.
If you want a banner, run that instead. An either/or principle for text and banners would work for me.
phalkon30
July 3rd, 2003, 11:35 AM
Hmm, going on what you said cheapprick, you could have a point system, like hit points in games like D&D.
Pictures are worth 4 points
Normal text is 1 point a line
Small text would be.... 3/4 of a point per line? lol

edit - me too Vipp, I'm thinking of quoting the entire "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix" in my sig.
umm 2nd edit- You know that actually sounds pretty good Phalkon, everyone start with "4 points" and go with it?
Any comments?

I hate it when people have huge sigs.....you can't tell anything apart from anything....sigs should only contain a graphic and a line or two of text.

I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. And CJ used to do it, I can handle one or two dividers, but it gets insane after that
Personally, I'd say 5 points to start with

Are we forgetting Krell Moon with the little Japanese school girl skirt? I'm sure that Krell enjoyed the lesbo action with the other 'moons' or whatever they're called.
I'm also content with my signature...it doesn't fuck up formatting with users who STILL (lol) use 640x480 and it's obviously a signature. Dilbert isn't even that bad...except people @ 800x600 have to scroll over a tad to see Phalkon's full post.

okay, no doubt some can be quite long, but seriously guys, what is all the fuss about, if you don't like them and they bother you, just turn them off. How is that a temporary fix? Ignoring them is the simplest fix there will ever be.

I hear ya phalk, I really do, and I agree, but that's wishful thinking, if people get turned off only because of how gay some sigs are, then they don't need to be posting here anyway, because I don't want to hear their shallow insights

A lenghty sig would be ok if its content were funny or interesting
I take more offence to a sig which contains something dumb like a US flag, an inane quotation or a "cool list" than to a sig which is too long. It just so happens that people who are into dumb sigs also like long sigs, so i guess it makes sense to ban them.
