Hehe, I love the fact that the OS im running, XP, is available from a good number of programs on this site. Just waiting for the supposebly destructive SP1 to be released, the latest news today says that it may effectively shut down almost all the warez'd XP operations out there using some kind of new algorithm that changes corporate key workings. Never fear, I'm willing to wager that SP1 will be fully patched, harmless, and available on every big file sharing service out there. This is Zeropaid, isnt it?

XP is definitely the best so far, with its advanced options even more so than before. Although at first it can be a system hog with all the glitter that it comes with, but once that's turned off it works fine. Also, I'm not sure but I think XP is the first MS OS to not be built with DOS.

I've had my computer for about a year and a half now, and its got ME and I have had no problems whatsoever, which comes to a relief after having a crap system with some version of 95 that came pre installed with my system. At one point I was reformatting the hard disk roughly every two weeks.

95 and 98 were always problematic. I liked Win2000, ME crashed many times each day, but since installing XP I've had no, repeat NO system crashes. And now that CD burning is built into the OS and Windows Media Player, I haven't even bothered to install Easy CD Creator.

hated 95, found 98SE about as exciting as a white shirt, have ME now and after disabling most of it find it ok. Might upgrade to xp (clean boot only) or just wait for the next level of MS madness to come out. should get my new apple (that is a few years old) any day now.

:cross Yea OK XP I guess but there are certain limitations or at least there is on my machine. Can't update it as my security level in IE6 prevents me from doing this and I've tried everything to override it and 2 some programs don't run (Thief: The dark Project). The new Star Wars game won't run on it although funnily enough will run on windows ME.
Honestly though Peeps One day Microsoft might actually come up with an OS that works and then again pigs fly out my butt.
One other thing I noticed that if you have 128mb of ram it'll crash nine times out of ten which is why I upgraded to 256mb and now no problems:shy
Not bob did you say everything? My modem didn't or should I say it won't install the supplied drivers just the ones XP suggests, although dead impressed when I plugged in a new printer this evening and didn't have to hunt for the cd it just installed it very cool. :devil For my money it's XP....even though there were imcompatibily problems at 1st which were a pain, the software companies have done a pretty good job releasing patches to fix that. Also the Win2000 kernal is very stable as opposed to the Dos kernaled 95, 98, and ME. Now if MS can only get their security features going....LOL

perfectly said, i agree completely
and btw, i have XP Pro, with sp1 (its not that hard, pm me if you need help), and guess how much i paid, 50 cents from a friend
i think the biggest advantage xp has over 98 (other than new hardware is faster than fuck and installs quick without much need for driver disks), is that 98 needed so many hacks and progs to make it slick, and even then, it wasnt all that great, xp has everything built in that i could think about having from 3rd party software, all MS tested and integrated perfectly (ok, i can think of a few things i want, but you know what i mean)
my biggest seller for xp, plug and play hard drives (it was built in 92!!), i installed it, waited for windows to load for a few secs, it recognized it automaticly and installed it without any help from me, it worked seconds after the first boot with it, try that on 98.....

How is this a meaningless poll?
Actually, It is a very helpful poll and it could help many people who are trying to decide which operating system that they will want to install on their computer. Many people gave opinions on this thread as to the 'ups' and 'downs' to each specific operating system and someone who would need that type of information could have been helped.
Oh, I have seen that you have created a poll! Congratulations! How is this poll relevant to the topic?
Well, That is a simple question which deserves a simple answer :
The poll and the thread coincide which each other. At least he didn't put up their :
Who is your favorite mexican? Which, by the way, I do see threads which create those types of polls and have no relevance what-so-ever to the topic.

I prefer windows NT4 service pack 5
It predates MS jamming the guts of IE into the system DLL's so they could claim that IE is an intergrated part of the OS. WIth plenty of RAM NT4 and without IE, NT4 runs smoothly on 200MHZ pentium class hardware.

My Opinion...
XP is a girls OS.
2000 advanced server is by the most stable piece of software ever to come out of redmond.
As for Linux GUI's, it dosen't seem to me it really matters - if you GUI is instable you can just choose another one without destroying your whole operating system.

XP is hands down the best. I have been using it for well over a year (since I ditched my Windows ME that came with my computer after a couple days because all of the problems) and haven't had many crashes (I don't think any have been related to the OS, just the 3rd party software) and I haven't come across a single incompatibility issue and like someone said, installing anything is a 10 second procedure I like to call "Next, Next, Next, Finish". My whole family can use the computer because it's colorful and userfriendly. My quicklaunch menu has the
internet,
windows media player,
outlook express (one click email checking)
Kazaalite++ build 5 (with toolbar),
AIM (one click to sign on),
and a shortcut to "My Shared Folder".
It's all there with one click.
I like it because it's packed with options like all the My Documents features, and the media player 9 is an extremely nice piece of work that plays any song, any video, legal and illegal, CDs, DVDs, copies CDs losslessly, has a nice music library setup so that you can arrange them by artist, album, genre, length title or whatever you want, it does the exact same thing with videos, and overall, it's so easy. If have a Pentium 4 processor (which is really what the OS is made for) and get StyleXP, you'll have the jigga comp. That's a tight program because it makes your desktop 3D instead of the lamoness that it comes with.
As always (98-XP) type "msconfig" in the run menu and disable the "load startup items", and you'lll have a really smooth PC that uses all of it's power for the application you want it to. With the newest version of TweakXP, you pimp your comp to the max, I highly recommend it.
Oh yeah, and I have SP1 and I haven't seen it block any Warez sites, not that I go to them. It just fixes compatibility issues and optimizes some stuff.

well, with my experience with computers i find windows 2K pro, the absolute most stable operating system MS has ever put out.
XP is new enough(and has enough changes to the kernel) where software companies are still learning it somewhat,
thus causing the occasional error.

Well, why not just win 2000 - you're still emulating the classic look so everything has to go through the XP interface rendering engine and it's still buggier than 2000. I once had my 2000 advanced server system booted up for 4 months without rebooting.
Theinfamousone

I never turn my comp off. There's too much stuff to be downloaded for any rest, and it runs faster than a whip. XP manages resources better than 2000, that's why it took 2 years extra. Windows XP Pro (NT 5.1), is just an optimized version of 2000, that's why there's supposed compatibility issues (I havne't seen any). I like the XP interface with StyleXP.

Psilaxs
January 29th, 2003, 03:32 PM
Oh yeah, sim city 4 rocks, but it will absolutely eat your system alive, then ask for seconds.
I am not kidding, even on the highest end system with a gig of ddr ram, it wil chug HARD when your population reaches over 60,000, it has some major memory handling issues, and needs patched ASAP,
@Vlet, Turning off all the pretty stuff in XP speeds it up considerably. Though it may go through the rendering engine, it isnt placing nearly the burden on your computer with all the effects turned off.
As for having that many hdd's, it is kind of deceiving, I *only* have 3, a 20 gig, a 40 gig, and an 80 gig. my 20 has 3 partitions,
2 of which are used for operating systems, the remaining 11 gigs, is used for games.

I've tried all of those OS listed.
Windows 95(B), my mom had it on a 486. It had lots of problems with freezing, and I remember her waiting for Scandisk to finish after a re-boot. Most of the freezes seemed to happen when she was using browsing the web with IE 4. No USB support.
Win 98, I started on this, first edition, used it for more than 2 years. I thought it was great, but then it was my first computer experience. Really, it could do everything I wanted at the time, like working woof with a scanner, graphics editing, web, mail, music in player 6.4. Crashed at times, especially on Java apps, but not as unstable as my mom's comp was. Also had second edition for a short time, didn't notice much difference.
WinME, got it on a HP Celeron 3 and liked it a lot. It was said to have a reputation for bugs, but for me it was more stable than 98. One of the things I loved was how fast it would boot. I'd turn the computer on, then turn my back to get a notebook or something, and there was my desktop! When I first saw that I was amazed. USB support not the best though, it would 'lose' my drive at times, and I'd need to re-boot to get the drive back.
Windows 2000 workstation, looks like a Windows 98 interface, nice and clean for the workplace, and the most stable system I'd experienced. I used this for video editing with large capture file masters that would crash Millenium. Negatives are extra long boot times again, and no zip folders support like ME started, even with 4 service packs! Looking it up I found a hack to put zip folders in.
XP SPII, I'm using it mostly now. I'd be happy with Win 2000, but I bought computers with XP in them, and I do like the Media Center 2005 experience, and that's the theme I use also. I didn't like how slow it seemed when I first tried it, but now that I have computers with speeds that can run it properly, slowness is not really an issue. Good things, zip folders are back, Media Center, faster parallel boot process, almost crash proof, and there are almost endless customizations, tweaks, and special editions out there, more than I've seen for any other Windows, period. From tiny editions, gamer versions, to army knife versions with absolutely everything.
I can't vote for a favorite, because every one of them has been good for something.
