i was wondering what version of windows do you guys like the most here, i currently use windows xp professional and i have to say i like it more than previous versions of windows (even with the playskool theme on), i find it to be stable, and compatible with most programs out there, the compatibility tab on programs helps sometimes, allthough i kind of miss the way windows 2000 was.
so what is your favorite windows os, and why?

Windows 2000.
And the SP4 RTP is out now (final). Download links @ www.neowin.net
Update (And I will be writing a larger one later on):
For those old-sk00l gamers who cant live without their dos games, consider using VDMSound to emulate the sound. There is also dosbox, and SoundFX 2000.
But I dont feel like going into details. Search for yourselves.

I used Windows 2000 professional in school. It was good.
Although, regradless of how much better XP and 2000 are, i've had my best experiences in the past with Windows 98SE.
I'm not basing this on which is bettter, just which i've had the best experiences with.

I have 3 computers. A DOS machine, a 98 machine, and a 2000 machine. I mostly use the 98 machine. Why? Because I'm a game player. And microsoft is such a bitch with backwards compatibility when it comes to games.
They've forced me to make a DOS machine just so I can play all those old school games without resorting to a program that slows down my processor speed. Also the DOS program in current windows operating systems is very buggy. IT just doesn't work as well as true DOS did.
Most of the games I play require 98. Half of them won't even install on the 2000 machine because they don't recognize it as windows.
I'm not too impressed with current games today. All story, and cut scenes. Very little actual "gaming." Or the game aspect is so complicated and convoluted that I just can't get into them.
Anyway, I have 3 machines and 1 monitor. So it's always a balancing act on what I'm working on.

i run windows xp home edition, and it beats every other OS that i know. I have 256MB RAm with 40GB Hard drive space. My computer runs very well everyday. Later on, im gonna double my RAM to 512MB, cause im a gamer.

XP no question. admitedly there were a lot of inital problems with the OS but that's why i tend to wait 12months until a new OS sorts itself out. helps if ppl actually read the recommended hardware configurations on products rather than the minumum.

XP Pro without a doubt, supports a lot more crap, hardware and software wise. Also, it is easier on the eyes and you can't beat the policy group accounts that can be made in it. I tend to think that it's a little (actual quite a bit) faster than any of the previous OS's with an exception to maybe Win2K (and yes, i got the SP4 as well, thanks!).

98se all the way. I don't mind trading a bit of stability for a lot more performance. and another thing, every program fits totally to 98, since its so old all the companies had the time to learn how to fit their programs to it

XP Pro, never had a problem with it on any game or any other program.
It needs a little work, but after a few hours of tweaking its the most stable thing I've ever used. You need to dissable services, then it runs on even minmal amounts of ram. I'd love to see a lot of your 98SE boxes go 2 weeks multitasking without a problem at all. You'd BSOD 99% of the time

pffft multitasking who needs it? i do run windows xp professional with 128mb ram, and i can have like 4 or 5 applications running, and with a few of the services enabled by defautl (im just to lazy to turn them off), and cpu usage is still low, which is a good thing.

XP Pro. After a disastrous 18 months with WinMe, I've had a lovely half a year with no problems apart from the OpenGL thing.
I haven't yet tried Longhorn as I don't fancy formatting my parents' computer again. However, when I get (eventually) get my new one, I'll be triple-booting XP Pro, RedHat 9 and either Longhorn or 2000 (depending on my mood ;-)

That's great. I still use XP home upgrade. At first I had a hell of alot of trouble with it. I had to reformat my harddrive several times, so far with all the current updates Now it has been working fine. I hope it stayes that way. When I got my computer, it came with Windows ME (What a disastor that was, More Crashes: Black and Blue screens of death, Kerrennel errors etc.) So I am very glad XP came out. I had some trouble Big time when it came out but now it seems ok, I hope it staays that way.

i got a question, how often do you guys go to windows update, and download the latest hotfixes? i dont do it because there is just way to many to keep up with, even though i do have dsl, its still a hassle with all of the security flaws in microsoft programs that are discovered to want to update it every day.
unless there is a serious flaw that i should patch, i will get the hotfix, but if its not, then forget about it.

I download all the critical updates. Then I do check under windows to see if any of the updates would apply to me. Some do Some don't I use DSL as well. I have noticed that when I do the critical updates I don't have as many problems with my computer.

ok if you are a developer or running a server, but no software, shakey hardware support and a steep learning curve means linux is impractical for most users.

Eh, I used to do every week or so...now, who knows. I mainly visit for the driver updates, and security is allways good.
