Hmm, lets see. American Football has more padding because...........................THEY'RE SMARTER JACKASS!!!!!
I mean its a full contact sport. Might as well have some proctection. Unless you feel sports are worth dying over....
Remember something else, American football has more diversity as far as body type. You have massive 300 pound guys and then little 180 pound recievers and such. Do you wan't to be tackled by a 300 pound monster with no padding? I could go on forever.

As much as I like gridiron its flaw is this stupid armour they where. As for diversity Australian rules is greater, we need 6 ft tall ruckmans and 5ft. rovers.American footballers would get slaughtered if they played rugby or AFL because they have no helmets or anything. I still like american football we use to play it at high school, except we had no gay ass armour.

Rugby Union is easily the most entertaining spectator sport.
American Football - Should be called Handball instead. Too mechanical, too slow, too boring, too long, too many eye-bulging meatheads with veins about to pop.
Many full-contact sports get by without excessive padding. But I guess al that extra stuff looks good on TV.

My avatar is a photo of Ned kellys armour. He is a famous australian bushranger (outlaw). He had a last stand with the ploice about 150 years ago. He and his gang made metal armour to take on the police, the armour worked but they shot Ned in the knees and he got captured. Even though he was a criminal he is still worshiped as a australian iconic symbol that has yet to be surpassed!

Hmm I dont like your comments on soccer [aka futbol in Europe]. It is a great sport, in my opinion far greater than American Football to watch and play. Rewards for faking an injury?I've got a feeling someone has been hearing and stereotyping a certain sport. More people need watch or experience soccer before blabbing about how boring is. the real deal is that it's a hundred times tougher and more exciting than American Football and loads of other sports. Like my friends, all that they could say before was soccer sucks, its boring as hell. Well I first told them to watch an American Football game, the whole game, Then we played some amateur american football. After that we watched a soccer match up together and played some soccer. Well after it all they changed their minds about soccer and said it was much tougher and better than American Football, and you dont have to stop like a pansy every 20 seconds. Well I dunno I guess I just like to defend my sport a lot.I was born in a country where soccer was king :] Yugoslavia or Serbia and Montenegro now.

I agree soccer has its merits. It is I suppose the most popular footbal in the world. I think that it is the most easiest to teach perhaps that explains soccers success internationally.

Football (Soccer as americans call it) is IMO way better to watch and play than the sports listed, with the expection of Australian Football which i have not had the pleasure to play.
If american football was better then why do only americans play it? I also agree with ManaSmoker in that it is very boring to watch with all of the stop start playing etc.
But i guess the only reason i like football is because i have been playing it since i was three, i also like to watch rugby but not too fond of playing it.
People generally like the sports they are brought up playing or watching.

Rugby Union has to be one of the best to watch IMO, more diversity in terms of players than League. I don't like league the whole thing with a grown man wriggling around on the floor like a worm that's just been stabbed with a tooth pick every time they get tackled is...well funny!
I follow football (soccer < dammit i hate that word soooo much) and quite like watching it, i think it's the most watched/played sport in the world, i might be wrong though.
As for Amercian football; IMO it sucks ass, it takes a whole day to play a game each team has about 60 players and every time someones tackled or falls over with the ball the game stops completely and you have to wait about 10 minutes for it to start again. Oh yeah and then there's the commercials ugggghhhh!
I've tried to watch Australian rules but i can't really get into it.
Nice poll BTW.

Yeah, there are differences.
3 downs instead of four, and a narrower field.
Makes for a faster paced game.

Dude..please
When I heard your opinion on soccer on the poll and on your posts...I thought I was going to puke at you
I'm sorry if I'm going to sound a little mean but take no offence.
How the hell can you even compare all these sports as football?
First off, the only FOOTBALL on your list in the poll is soccer and nothing else.
American Football isn't football, and I dont even know who the hell named that sport football when clearly you ALMOST NEVER kick the ball...
Rugby is a cross between soccer and american football so I'll give you that...
Now onto the topic of soccer
You think it's easy to learn eh? It's the toughest sport to play out of all your "football type" sports on that poll
Tell me, in what other sport do you run your ass off for 45 minutes non-stop?
In what sport do you get your ass checked and have a chance to break your leg, hand, or for the fact, ANYTHING
In what sport do you need to learn the skills of handling the ball as well as soccer players do?
In what sport do you need to learn how to fake people out and have a shot strong enough to be able to make it in the top corner of the goal from 30 yards?
Exactly! There is nothing out there that pushes players to that kind of level..NOTHING
People fake injuries? I thought I was going to cry for you when I heard that...
How do you fake injuries and get away with them? Obviously you have no idea on how to play soccer and you probably never did.
You get your ass beat down to the ground by getting hit with the ball in the face at times, and getting checked and doing a 180 in the air while falling to the ground on your head or back..you think thats fun? You think you fake injuries that way? I dont think so..
Soccer is THE MOST POPULAR sport in the world and you ask why?
Because it presents the toughest challenge and brings the most out of a player...that's why!
I could give you 50 thousand more reasons WHY soccer is the most popular sport in the world..but my post is long enough already..so I wont go into detail
Thank you and have a nice day,
Of course, dont get me wrong I just got pissed at your view of the sport of the world..

it takes a whole day to play a game
I suppose if a whole day is 3 hours, then ya sure. Soccer(football) takes longer.......a lot longer than american football.
each team has about 60 players
53 for the whole roster (regular season, playoffs, super bowl), and only eleven are on the feild of play at any given time
American football has so many rolls and so many different angles and objectives. Like I said before, where else do you see such a wide variety of different people (size, ethnic, etc...).

I vote for the NFL, though I am partial, 'cuz I was raised on it, but I don't think the padding makes them pussies, you try getting spearheaded with a helmet and then tell me if that feels good, I've played the game, and let me tell you that when someone gets a good hit on you, it hurts a hell of a lot, especially when you get blindsided, plus when scores get to be too ridiculous, like in the 100's, I just lose interest, let's not have like a million different ways to score a point

First off, who cares how many people come to the games?
Who cares what "seats" the people sit on?
For all I care, I could be sitting on the ground watching a lovely and exciting game rather then sitting on some leather seets watching crap...dont you agree?
I dont care if I'm one of the 50k watching the game..it doesnt matter because there are 200k more watching on tv and breaking their hands by hitting their tables because a player has missed a shot
What matters is what's popular, enjoyable, and fun to watch..not what sport gets more people to come to the games
And btw, Thanks Ken :fire

I'll have to go for football (soccer to others), it's fast and fun and doesn't stop all the time. Someone mentioned that it's barely football because it doesn't have so much contact, well who said that you have to have contact, it's named after a ball and your foot. I might have said Aussie Rules football but to be honest I do not know enough about the game to comment, from the little I've seen though, it looks good.

Um, thats incorrect, have you heard of a little stadium in Spain called "Nou Camp" home to Barcelona. Its stadium holds over 100,000 seats. The new wembly will hold 100,000 thousand seats. Virtually most of the teams in the serie A in Italy house over 80,000 i cant remeber which ones off my head that hold 100,000 but believe me there are plently of them.
Maybe english stadiums are a bit smaller than the massive ones around the world but the quality inside them are among the finset in the world. Players such as Juan Pablo Veron and Thierry Henry have said that inside english stadiums the quality is second to none.
Manchester Uniteds stadium is >70,000, but when you think about it clubs arent all about how many fans they can stick into a stadium, if manchester united thought that im sure they would build a massive one seeing as they are the most supported and richest team in the world.

which one is the one where they just whoop each others asses at random? That's technically called "Carrier" football, you may not recognize the name because while all of us have played it we tended to refer to it as "smear the queer" or "rape the ape" or a dozen other lame rhymes. Someone kicks off or tosses an american football into a crowd and whoever catches it is the "carrier" (or whatever) and everyone piles on them. Great game!

As someone mentioned earlier to whole poll is flawed because only football(soccer) is a type of football and all other forms are just imitators that share a common name.
Soccer came first and i mean like 800 years ago, then rugby in the 19th century and then the american and austrialian versions
i voted football(soccer) as i'm British and thats the game I love, although i also greatly enjoy rugby union and american football.
Don't know enough about aussie rules
rugby league just isn't that interesting here in Britian, i've seen some Austrailian rugby though on TV which is much more high paced and brutal though

ahh, never played it by that name... or any of the others... but i don't remember what we used to call it.
actually, it probably had no name...
the game:
set up like football... quarterback, etc...
get in line, give the ball to the quarterback.
while the teacher isn't looking, tackle somebody.

With a good ref (not a northern hemisphere one) rugby is my fav game (obviously im from New Zealand :p).
I find American football more fun to play than watch, its like rugby with the set pieces but nothing else except a whole lot of padding which is stupid, it only serves to slow players down.
Dont understand Aussie Rules but it looks more like water polo to me than anything else.
Any Soccer frustrates me. There is zero tolernace for any kind of physical aggression (part of the reason I like rugby). Players are pussies, someone gets their triple reinforced shin scraped gently and they lie on the ground crying. And the "Hollywoods" which fake injuries for a penalty piss me off the most.
Rugby League is good but can be a bit boring unless its a big game imo.

Wow..seems you never played it
Would you like to get kicked with kleets (however you spell it lol) right in your leg? You know how powerful a dude must kick in order to kick the ball far? What if he missed and smacked the kick straight in your leg? Would that be fun? You would be crying in pain and wouldn't walk for 5 days if it wasnt for shin guards
So please dont say they are pussies
As for faking sometimes when getting hurt in the penalty box..I would too
As long as it gets my team a free shot on goal :P

Definatly American Football, the reason for all the padding is because we are playing against 300 lb people and and try running full force into a 300 lb person with your head down and taking hits from the side while going throught the line, without pads, it wont happen. Also the pads just add to the dificulty of the game, think about it if you have about 20 pounds more than your normal body wieght of pads on, its gonna seem i little harder. Also about all the stop and go action, it makes it more stressful and even more tiring, just because you are thinking reacting, running to your huddle running to the line running the ball or you pattern, then running back to a huddle. Garunteed soccer players couldnt play american football just because they wont get the concept. American football is a game of brains and skill, to fake out a corner, you need to study how he reacts on the snap and how he will react in all situations so that you are prepaired to counter-react, to defeat a stuf quaterback, you need to study his pocket protection and they way he looks, you also need to get in his head and see what he is seeing and judge were he will throw, to beat a stud running back, you need to know his weak spot and think of what he will do. So in order to play the game of football it isnt just a game of hitting senslessly or running around like chickens with ur heads cut off like other sports, it is a game of knowing how the other 11 will react and reading all of thier minds at the same time.

American Football entertains me the best, and I enjoy them all. When you've played this game against 300 lb. men you will know exactly why padding is required. Trust me, its not for looks.

American Football? I hope we are on the same page here.
American Football has comercial breaks every so often and yes some during halftime as well.

All in all, the reported time is not how long a game lasts OBVIOUSLY.
P.S. I believe the halftime is about 15 minutes long.
There are no commerical breaks during a game of football (soccer), only at half time. Stoppage of play for throw ins, corner kicks etc is not added on, only time for injurys - and that is rarely more than five minutes.
I often watch soccer on a saturday afternoon, the game kicks off at 3 and is always finished by 4.50.
Aussie rules? Dont make me laugh. Only an aussie would classify a bunch of baboons jumping on each others head as a sport.

Just wanted to clear up a few things about the NFL
1. Each period is 15 minutes
2. There is a two minute intermission between periods
3. There are four periods in a game
4. Halftime is 12 minutes
5. All games are the same length playoff or Superbowl
As for my feeling towards professional sports,
NFL,Futbol,AFL,Soccer etc., (I love them all). Too hard to vote on it.
I would just love to be one of the players making the large chucks of $$. I feel all Pro sports figures make a huge impact on all of us and our children as mentors and role models.
Peace Out:gj

So please dont say they are pussies
I said "someone gets their triple reinforced shin scraped gently". Not if he got hit hard. Im not saying some hits to the shins dont hurt its just that the majority of players make a big deal out of nothing alot of the time.
My main point was the pain aspect players have to put up with is in general far higher in Rugby Union and Rugby League (imo) and players dont sit on the ground crying. If they did it would be a pretty boring game.

The official name of Rugby Union is Rugby Football Union. It's just that people don't call it by it's full name.
And also many 'poor' countries have large football followings because you can play football with practically anything, cans, rolled up t-shirts etc etc. That's all you need you don't need to buy a special ball, pads, helmets or anything.

Listen...
People DONT FAKE penalties in soccer man...they used to and they still try to AT TIMES but they NEVER win..
Do you know why?
Because refs aren't stupid anymore..they know whether the fall was severe and the team deserves a penalty kick or if it was an accident or small scratch...where nothing is awarded
You get a penalty kick in soccer not really from getting hurt in the penalty box but because a player HAD THE CHANCE to score a goal yet a player from the other team denied him the chance by purposely tripping, or checking the player in the box
Who the hell needs tackling?
How is that all exciting?
You see in American Football all they do is tackle and take 10 minute breaks to line back up again..how is that exciting?
In soccer there are low scores because there is a goalie on the freaking team...do you see 15 goals in hockey? No

1)off side rule
This is related to your 4th point, and it is there for a reason: it makes the game more special when a goal is scored, and leads to a game with more skill, and a more studied build up. It also means attacking players have to show more skill in timing runs and positioning themselves.
Games have been played without the offside rule many times, and they just end up kinda boring with high balls being pumped upfield and the midfield being bypassed. They typically have 10 to 15 goals per game. The status of a goal is lowered and the game becomes dull.
2)Dudes faking penalties
That is called gamesmanship and you will find it in ANY sport.
3)No real tackling
Thats not really true, leg breaks are common in football, and the rules against tackling the man instead of the ball are there for a reason: to stop players getting more serious injuries and to give the finesse of more skillful players a chance to flourish.
4)Low scoring!
I would call this a strong point of football. Who wants to watch a game which ends 105-96?
When a goal is scored in football it is something special, not like basketball where they score a basket every 10 seconds.

There is nothing wrong with basketball where you score all the time but I just dont get the point in that..although I like BB...

So your saying that to make soccer a "better" game it should become more aggresive? Yeah right, how in hell would that make it better?
Back in the old days players were allowed to charge down the goalkeepers, but it was eventually banned. Oh yeah and whats so bad about having the offside rule? If there was not one the would be players literally standing on the line of the oppositions goal wating for a tap in. It adds more techinicality to the game.

yeah that was Rivaldo. I have to say i have watched football from a lot of different countries and i think one of the best to watch is the English game. It tends to be a lot stronger and the refs now seem to be playing advantage a lot more often. I think they have learnt this from Rugby Union where i think that the refs have really got it together in terms of playing advantage.
As for the diving, i think this happens in all sports and may eventually lead to a video referee in football. I'm still unsure whether a video ref. would benefit the game or not.

There's no cause for worry, American Football isn't popular outside America.
Reading the pitiful comments in this thread to suggest American Football is better that Football made great reading. If you want to see 300lb men stand in the way of other men trying to get past them, and at the same time call it a sport? Then fine, you keep watching that shit, whilst calling you 'buds' over the phone and shouting ,What's uppppppp?"
Leave the rest of the world to enjoy a real sport, where it takes skill to control the ball, to caress the ball, it's almost like an artform watching a wonderfully crafted goal being scored. Seeing several large padded men, run into other several large padded men is not sport,or entertaining.
Please, I urge you people, for the sake of sport, keep American Football firmly in America. Keep it unpopular with the rest of the world.

Football will always be called football or the official association wouldn't be named FIFA. In the Americans eyes any other countries is third world countries...well at least theirs government think so. Thats why they have world series which that no other parts of the world participates. American football is just more intense and barbaric rugby rip-off. I wonder why its called football when the game is almost as same as rugby...should be called American Rugby instead.
Please remember sports is real so is not about injured or killing someone if you want that just watch WWE...just love that funny chairman.
Conclusion, football is the most popular sports in the world.

Can't say I agree about your comments on "Soccer". "Soccer" is the only ball game listed in which the feet are used for primary ball control. The rest use hands, therefore they should not be classed as Football. What do you think FIFA stands for?!
And wearing padding in "American Football" is just pathetic. People say it's because anyone can dive on anyone, well that's not sport, that's cheating! Now Rugby or Australian "Football", they're PROPER sports.

That's because I speak... The Truth!
American Sport is a typical example of the insular attitude of Americans. That the rest of the world is wrong and they are right.
