American Football is for pussies? Heh just ask Dennis Byrd, Mike Sherrard, or Jack Lambert about that. You guys think its so damn easy to play American football then you're full of crap. Try 3-a-day practices in full pads in 100 degree weather and you'll see how easy it is. Plus take into fact that artificial turf can also get you hurt seriously and you'll see that American football has it's share of danger. Guess it all boils down to what you liked to play and watch as a kid.

The way you have practice and what you wear has nothing to do with the topic..
And if it does, would you or anyone else like to run and play a scrimage for 45 min each on a 100 degree day?
hmmm....
Running for 45 min...
Wearing padding for practice

Sure it does in that the person who started this thread inferred that people who play American football were pussies. The thing is I'm not trying to make myself out to be a jackass. I never said American football was better and in fact said that it depends on what sports you grew up with and loved playing as to what you think is better. So you can harp that one is better than the other all you want because at best it's all a matter of opinion and not fact.

Anyone here who things that American Football is for pussies and that they wear pads then please by all means if you want to get tackled by a 300+ linebacker running as hard as he can at you without pads then please be my guest.
The need for helmets is because when you get tackled on the ground other players around you get tackled on the ground also and you wouldnt to get your head smacked by a foot or shoulder pad or anything else. Also you wouldnt want to get accidental smacked in the face while getting tackled by another player. Or smash your head into the ground while getting tackled.
Other than that its tradition which was started a long time ago and eventually evolved to what it is today. Players didnt orginally wear helmets.

I admit I didn't read ALL 9 pages of posts, but I hear the same thing over and over. The better sport is the one where people get hurt more. I suppose if that's the criteria Rugby would be my vote....but it's not.
I like my own American Football because I see more stradegy in it's game play. I am NOT saying soccer/rugby/etc hasn't any but the process of going through each down, devising your stradegy, running the play and if it doesn't work, trying something new is trypically American. Also the fact that if the team does not perform (make their next 1st down) they lose the ball. Perform or move out of the way.
As for pads, it doesn't much matter to me. I would guess that the pads encourage the players to hit eachother harder, but that's my opinion. I haven't been tacked by a footballer, rugby player or a football player, so I couldn't make the comparison.
It does make me chuckle the way we (Americans) play so little attention to soccer yet reached the quarter finals recently. It just burns you all up doesn't it! :devil

We are arguing about which sport is the best not according to toughness or how hard you get your ass whooped..
Just in general...and someone brought up that American Football is for pussies and thats why this thread is still going...

That's why Rugby players have cauliflower ears and various teeth missing, because they are hard bastards. And the "300lb men running at you" is a moot point. Have you seen the size of Rugby players? 6' 6" is considered short by today standards. Jonah Lomu for example. isn't exactly a short arse.
American football players are perceived as pussies with the rest of the sporting world, and with good reason.

Reasons why Australian Football is the Best Football code:
1) Most athletic-AFL players run and jump more. They also play for over 2 hours per match
2)Most dynamic-AFL requires kicking, handballing, tackling, marking, sheparding, jumping. This creates an exciting game of football where players utilize their full athletic ability
3)Most free flowing-AFL does not stop much, the football is always changing sides constantly. The ball can travel 150 metres up the other end of the field in a few seconds
4)Highest scoring-AFL scores typically are above 100 points. More scoring leads to more intense spectator sport.
5)Big crowds- The AFL grand final has more attendance than a world cup final or super bowl.(thanks mainly to the mighty MCG)
6)Its Australian

A 300+ linebacker? Please. You have obviously never seen Jonah Lomu in action or Brad Thorn tackling (cheers Aussie :>), thats something to be scared of.
What American football calls tackling which is basically shoulder barging with big "dont hurt me" pads isn't in the same ballpark as tackling in Union (or League).
And what happens if you "find" yourself on the wrong side of a ruck in Rugby? The opposition often "mistake" your head for the ball and "ruck" it out appropriately :)
Rugby players play this game professionally for 10+ years. They dont need padding. So yes, padding is "for pussies" imo.

Anything that is played mostly by keeping the ball in your hands and running (rugby, american football etc), doesn't qualify as "FOOTBALL" to me...this title belongs (or should belong) only to Soccer (which is called Footbal to the vast majority of the world) which is played by using your feet. Ok, unscientific I admit, BUT a co-worker of mine played American Football first and then Rugby in college. He said that Am football, with all it's "armour" gave him the confidence to hit harder. Between the pads and the fact that both passing and running plays oferred the opportunity to get a running tackle going, he said besides the normal broken fingers/toes he saw more serious injuries (in terms of rehab time) in American Football. When he started playing Rugby, he nearly knocked himself uncouncious hitting like he used to in Am Football because he no longer had a helmet.
So....despite that I still like Am Football for it's structure of gameplay, not the increased likelihood of injury.

July 18th, 2003, 10:25 AM
You're not meant to use your head like that in Rugby! You're meant to tackle, not barge and you can't block for a team mate that has the ball. I agree that the armour may be confidence but if you watch some rugby internationals with 2 players charging at each other you can almost hear the crowd go "oooooooooo" when they hit.
It is truly impressive to watch, and there is always the dreaded (and illegal, i think) spearhead tackle.

Football = soccer in American
Football is played entirely with kicking the ball...except for the goalies, so soccer in american owns the word football

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but even if you take it statistically the *real* Football (aka Soccer) deserves the title far more than anything else, if you consider that 20 players (I'm not taking into account the goalkeepers, although they kick as well) continually kick a ball for 90 minutes. We are talking about more than one thousand kicks for sure...
I still wonder who was that genius who gave the title Football to all the others (rugby, american football etc).

Aussies don't need padding because they are bred from prisoners and desperadoes. They are so grateful to be running around with no leg irons and no nice kind English person shooting their arse that they never stopped to think about protection. Also have a look at some of these Aussie Rules players. If you don't have a brain you don't need a helmet.
I don't think American Football sucks because of the padding, It sucks because it is not a great game to watch. Too much stopping and starting (like rugby league), too much obsession with statistics (if you need statistics then watch test cricket) and not enough flow to the games.OK a bad football (when I say football you can read soccer) match is as bad a but a good one floooows, it is a thing of power, finesse, timing, creativity, joy, arrogance, co operation, intimidation, humiliation, celebration, beauty and victory. It is so fluid, it looks choreographed though everything is spontaneous and improvised. A game can turn on an individuals outrageous talent or misfortune or on a teams discipline and effort. Synergy! The experts are always proved wrong, nothing is predictable. The smallest amateur team sometimes beats the millionaire superstars and no one quite knows how. It is such a simple game, it lets the magic in.

I'm amazed that you took such deep offence to a crap joke but the amazingly funny bit is that you got so wound up about the comment about prisoners and desperadoes while all the time your avatar is Ned Kelly who is.....Australia's most famous and celebrated escaped prisoner and desperado!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
Good one.
Or is it just your sense of humour? Anyhow the present is the present and the past is unchangeable and I was just having a dig at the image and at Aussie rules not the country or the general people. BTW in the new multicultural Australia how many of the Rules players are not English Scottish or Irish origin. Are there many Greek /Japanese/ Vietnamese/Serbian players?
I'm glad to hear your econmony is good and that you speak better.
Anyhow there is such an intense rivalry between Oz and UK in every field of sport there is no point in getting so personally offended by it, it comes from close family like ties not from hatred and taking the piss has always been a part of Engish and Oz life , so calm down, get your sense of humour back on track and just take the piss back.
I appreciate that a lot of Americans and other English speakers totally misunderstand the English and England and I am not too bothered if they get the wrong end of the stick or come to some half arsed opinion about racism or aggression or whatever, it would just take too long to explain it usually, but Aussies laugh at the same stuff so sorry I upset you but some things will never change.
That's all.

"....not a convict" I stand corrected about him being an escapee but as we're into hair splitting pedantic mode I do know he was convicted before being hung. OK so he didn't escape from custody but he was certainly a fugitive from justice and spent 2 years as an outlaw robbing banks etc.

soccer is the best sport. im tired of people saying the soccer is pussy. anyone who has played the sport knows that it causes more injuries than football. ive seen a kid get his femur broken with a shot. also, i think that it requires people to be in incredible shape, more than the others. if the others are so good, how come the whole world does like em? also, faking an injury is a caution.

American Football is the best. Soccer is for pussies. Rugby is pretty interesting. And I would like to see Induna run 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds w/out pads while being chased down by one of those so called "padded pussies".

interesting thread this.
stats reflect not popolarity of the respective games, but where the largest popluations are... UK/europe (soccer poofs) and the US/Canade (American football pussies).
Considering Rugby Union is a 2nd tier sport in the UK to soccer and probably relatively unheard of in the US, and League & Aussie Rules is only played at the arse end of the earth (yes folks, thats exactly where australia is)... i am quite suprised by the votes attributed to these football codes.

there was also alot of cheap talk about who's code has the biggest hits. doesn't matter where or how you get tackled or hit... it hurts. padding or none. but ya'll should note one concerning fact about rugby union....
it's pretty much legal (and encouraged) to kick the shit out of someone lying on or near the ball. this is usuall done by a 6'6 120kg meat head wearing size 13 football boots with about 8 or so 1/2 inch long steel tags in the sole. now, that can take it out of you....
also aussie rules.... it's one of the few sports in the world where you still get a point if you miss.... figure that one out?

I used to play rugby in a club here, now in my university. But I have to admit soccer is the most popular sport of the world.
