I have winamp associated with just about every type of file on my p.c. but what I want to change is the file descriptions at the side. I've realised I can't tell anymore between an mp3 file and a wav file beacuse they all show up as 'winamp media file'. Anyone know how to change this. I'd want to keep the file associations as they are just change the descriptions back.
thanks

I never tried it cause it seems to be useless to me, but do the following:
- go to registry (start -> run -> regedit)
- hkey_classes_root: there are all files listed. Go down to "avifile" or "wmafile" an change the description, i.e. "videoclip"
Perhaps it works. It won't work using "folder options".
Here another advice: If you want to change the icon for all your media files download "resource hacker" (reshack), open winamp.exe and replace one of those icons with one of your own. You can choose it then from the winamp preferences menu.

Thanks very much. It was the .wav and .mp3 types right at the start of the hkey_classes_root list that I had to alter in the end. I changed these back to what they were and it works superbly.
Much appreciated

Hang on, strangely winamp keeps changing back the file extension relating to .wav files but not mp3's ??? I've done exactly the same for both file types yet mp3 is working fine and .wav is still labelled as Winamp media file even though it says it isn't in the registry !!!
Any ideas ?
I'm using 2000 by the way

uncheck "register types at startup" in Winamp "file types"- preferences.
It should work then.
You must be careful then; other apps might try to register types after that. Always click no!

Another way you can tell is sorting them by type. It sorts alphabetically, so even though they'll share the same icon, .wav files--or even .ogg files--will show up after mp3.
