I have just started using emule and 99% of my downloads never start up.
I am connecting with a high ID and sharing files.
I have tried to download files from filedonkey (http://www.filedonkey.com/), but the file never starts downloading when I copy the link into emule.
And when a file starts downloading, the speed is at 1.0 Kb/s!
Does it matter to which server I connect to?
What am I doing wrong?
I am baffled as to how users are saying emule is great when I can't get squat from the program.

Patience is the key to emule. sometimes it takes hours for downloads to start! downloads tend to go very slow in eMule so that is normal. Don't worry this is common! The download will always eventually start. Sleep on it, you will see.

is it just me or does there seem to be some sorta of mystizim that surrounds emule. i mean in todays age everybody wants stuff as fast as possible so they use the programs that will given them that. but for some reason with the emule even if the DL starts late it will most likely be done with in a day or so. i dont know atleast i would like to think thats theres magic going on.

On an average how long do I have to wait for the download to start? One hour? Fours hours? A day?
Does the start download time decrease the more I use emule?
So far I'm getting 1.0 Kb/s. Does the speeds improve the more I use emule?
What speeds do you get on emule?
What are your guys experience?

I have used emule since it appeared , one question are you sharing any files at all? emule has a credit system that (sofar) has never been cracked unlike that pile o kak kazaa , the more you upload to other users the more downloads will start, go to statistics and see what your ul/dl ratio is, you ideally want more uploads than downloads, also do you have a firewall on the system and is it set correctly? emule hates zonealarm as it cannot handle the high speed connections , i ditched zonealarm a long time ago using sygate now which runs beautifully with emule as long as you set your advanced connections up correctly.
Finally (breaths in) what are you downloading, you want to download stuff with high amounts of sources , if you try and bag stuff with only 1 or 2 sources the chances are it will take ages to come it . Go to http://www.emule-project.net/ for some good emule faqs :)

P.s the forums there have loads of useful tips for emule newbies, I moderate on a few of them - go to http://www.emule-project.net/board/index.php

All right, how do I configure sygate personal firewall to use emule properly?

In Sygate go to advanced rules, click on make new rule (call it what you want)
Edit rule -
Set allow traffic - all network interface cards
Hosts - apply rule to all addresses
Protocol - All
Applications - emule(obviously) , generic host processor for windows,tcp/ip service application (allow all)
Set mode to normal (right click on system tray icon)
Next go to emule preferences/connection - capacity's download 96, upload 60 (same on limits) max connections 800 hard limit 400.
Make sure you update your server list from http://ed2k.2x4u.de/index.html
And finally go to extended settings and make sure max connections/5 secs is 20 (any more and it will have a fit!)
File buffer size 240000,que size 5000
Then shut down yer machine , reboot and leave emule running for as long as poss, it will build up speed over a few hours usually,
oh and finally make sure (if you are using xp) that you are NOT using the built in firewall as it is crap and emule hates it with a vengence.
