This is the third AVI to VCD thread in the top ten right now, LOL. Umm, I've never tried Nero, if it works, go for it.

I wouldn't recommend it. Use Tmpgenc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main2.html) to convert the video file to a vcd compliant mpeg. Then use Nero to author a vcd using the mpeg.

having been using it for the past few days, i can only recommend canopus pro coder. it's the baws! :)
amazingly easy to use, and excellent results.

PiRaNeTuS is right.
Tmpenc is by far the better of the two and its free.
Does a great job on vcd. If you want svcd, its free for the first 30 days, but I hear that can be extended.
