I'd like to convert a song with vocals into a karaoke song. I need some software that is smart enough to be able to remove the lyrics from the song. Anyone know of any software that can handle this?

My cousin's mini system does this, but she lives a whole state away.

there are plenty of winamp plugins that do it, with varying levels of success.

google voice removal plugin or something similar.

Here's a link from Tech TV (http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/howto/story/0,24330,3402280,00.html) that talks about this, and has a link to the Winamp plugin.

AnalogX has a vocal remover program for Winamp. Works fair for a free ap.
www.analogx.com

You have to understand that the vocals are not removed all the ap does is mute the center channels where the vocals are located. Any other sounds, whether it be instruments, effects, background vocals, etc that share the center channel will also be muted. So this ap only works well on a few songs as most modern recordings mix the vocals tracks with the instrumentation. My advice is that if the song is popular then there is probably already a karaoke version of the song out there and you should probably search for it on Kazaa or find a hub on DC++. You could also fool around with Cool Edit but your basicically doing the same thing as you would with Analog X's vocal remover and will have about the same results. Hope that helps.

Yeah, I got it. I installed Winamp, and it works for some songs. But not the one I need it for. Oh well. Hey, anyone know how to install a Winamp skin? I downloaded a couple, and got a *.wal file. I can't figure how to get it to work. I've tried putting it in the skins folder and it just won't find it. Grrrrrr.

Nope, it wants me to open it up with something. Oh yeah, I donwloaded another one that had jpg in folders and an xml document. Wha the? Winamp itself hasn't changed a bit since i used it in the circa Napster era.

Install Winamp Skins
It is very easy to install Winamp Skins. Just follow these steps:

Zip up all the bmp into one meaningful zip file (e.g. if you made a skin of your pet cat, you might like to zip your skin up in 'Meow_Amp.zip')

Next, put your zip file into your skin directory (the default is Winamp\Skins)

Activite Winamp and press Alt-S, or choose Option -> Skin Browser... from the popup menu.

From the opened window, choose the appropiate skin name and then click Close. (e.g. 'Meow_Amp'). Done.

Hmmm....reinstall Winamp3 again....cuz double clicking on wal files worked for me when I tried it...oh as for the XML's that is the skin....Wasabi uses all that stuff to 'make' the skin on the fly....

Winamp2 was just a basic set of 256 color bmp's some basic HTML color codes for vis and sometimes a map of numbers in yet another text file to tell Winamp what to show and what not to (transparent skins).

Matt, he's talkin' bout 3....lol you gave him info on 2 :D
