View Full Version : FEEDBACK: About that Transfers screen...

Recalling back to WinMX 2.6, the transfers window had a feature which would switch focus onto whatever line of the screen that represented a file that was about to start, or had just started, transferring data. I remember that by version 2.6, this feature could be disabled. With the advent of Cable, and guys like me who organize libraries of hundreds of .MP3s, and who may download an entire CD by selecting dozens of possible hits for each song in order to get the best bandwidth, this became annoying, and I disabled it. If I wanted to see which files were moving, and which to delete, I had merely to scroll the window, and point and click.

Now, with multi-threaded downloading, and the "Resume/Find Sources" entry on the context menu, this "Feature" can make working with large screens of downloads, particulaly movies, for which there may be dozens of copies, of the same file, IMPOSSIBLE! When I try to encourage data movement by clicking on an entry and hitting "Retry/Find Sources", I am entreated to 5+ minutes of being bounced around the window, as one file after another is added to the lists, and it is impossible even to navigate to another part of the screen to work on yet another stalled download.

Worse! By directing me uncontrollably to another part of the screen, I have actually LOST valuble bandwdth! When, for example, I've clicked on a dead line with no hope of starting, in order to get rid of one of many hopeless threads, my screen was moved literally right under my mouse, and I clicked "Clear"--on the main line of an actively downloaing file!!! This absolutely will not do!

BUT IT GETS WORSE!!! Not only is WinMX's Auto-Moving annoying, but with the Multi-Threading featuers, it isn't even properly implemented! I am repeatedly moved to an area at the bottom of the screen where nothing is taking place! --AND, wen I try to scroll up the screen to see what files have started to respond, WinMX simply drags the window away from me! And it's WORSE whenever any files are set to AutoComplete, because I never know when it's going to start!

This fact is critical for what I am about to say:

In WinMX 3.x, THE AOTO-MOVE FEATURE CANNOT BE DISABLED!!!

This fact is devastaing.

I find myself in a situation where just working with the current WinMX impleentaion makes my head ache. And my mouse's lifespan has certainly been shortened by this...I have thrown it across the room several times! So, for the designers and engineers who work tirelessly on this project, I must beseach you....nay, I Beg of you....:

In the next incarnation of WinMX, until this feature can be fixed, and until there is an option in the preferences to disable it, the Auto-Move/Auto-Scroll feature of the Transfers Window must be removed from WinMX.

There....I've spoken my piece. I hope it gives the rest of you some peace.

Is that all you have to say?

If my writing style seems particularly articulate, that is something you can blame on a fine English and grammar education.

Of course, if it seems painfully articulate....that is something that must be blamed upon your own lilmited understanding of the English language. (And upon this Internet era, which encourages all manner of abbreviations, emoticons, smileys, and cutesey-phrasology.)

And, no, don't ask me to phrase that in the form of dialogue box.... :blah

I understand what your saying :-) I think you should write a note to the developers of winMX and perhaps they will apreciate your opinion.

sorry but it seems funny also, it reminds me of a thread I read on another forum. Some guy was complaining big time and not as articulate as you I might add. But he complained because he downloaded a 20 cd compilation and found each cd was one big mp3 file, or 20 mp3 files. Man getting 20 cd's in one file is cool for me! But he wanted each cd to be individual files all named and in properly titled. Well that's not to much to ask when it's all free huh? :-)
In case you wonder where you can download things like 20 cd compilations, well....on edonkey. The best place to get high quality downloads, but not always what you want.. :-) but what you find and sometimes you find some very cool thing....

Yeah we can all get what we want, but we are getting something now huh? for free yet! :-)

the attachment contains the screenshot. download it and look at the screenshot i am providing so that you can get an idea how to do this.

in the lastest version of winmx this is a section called file transfers, I believe you should put a check in the box that states

clear incomplete downloads after so many seconds, you should check this box so that if the connection doesnt go through, then a new source can takes it place automatically, as well that you can avoid the pitfalls of connection errors. to avoid this error i believe that you should also make sure in the advance section that you have pending downloads time out after a set amount of time also. This way you wont have a problem. THis not might be the solution but i think it could be.
One more note, this my solve the solution of you having to keep clearing a transfer that is not stable or going through.
good luk.

A cool program to wrap multiple MP3s together is AlbumWrap (http://www.infamus.com/albumwrap/). It satisfies those who just want the whole album and those who want individual songs. I prefer the latter, but it's much easier to download the whole album than search out each individual song or browse hosts. The extractor is free, and the wrapper is $15. Good program.

Aha! Where and/or how do I sed a note to WinMX? Their "Support page" has no links even for simple user feedback....

--Oh, and to that imbacile who asked about my "King's English" and "Queen's Panties".....if I HAPPEN to be getting in my Queen's panties from time to time, that is a subject that is STRICTLY betwee me and her!
