After using Kazaa Lite , when I try to shutdown my PC(Windows 98 SE),
I get the following message:FATAL EXCEPTION 0D has occurred at
0000:00010000.My PC hangs there and I have to push the reset button. I have zone alarm and AVG anti-virus.I have SBC Dsl.
I really don't want to stop using kazaa lite .
The same thing happens with Winmx.
Please anybody knows the answer to this problem?
Thanks.

How about a little more info.
OS,ram, processor speed, hard drive space. That kind of thing.
Cause if your using windows 95 or 98. Theres your problem.
Just kidding, but many things could be the problem. For example, have you had your OS installed for 2 years, installing, uninstalling something every other day to see if you like an app?
Have you had a virus even though its been cleaned, if you do use win9x, does your system do a scandisk everytime you boot?
This kind of thing could be a hint its time to do a backup of files and do a clean install.
Now, Im NOT saying this is what you have to do, only that a little more info on your problem so as to properly determine what the issue could be.:fire

What OS?
In any event. I'd first before anything else.
A. Run scandisk (or eqivelent utitlity) to check for errors.
B. Reboot.
If problem persists, i'd try a clean uninstall, registry entries included. And then install again.

Raises hand!!
Anyway, to highlight what you found, here's what the main part said:
"
A Fatal Exception 0D is an error message that is most commonly found, but not limited to, out dated or damaged video display adapter drivers and out dated multimedia software; however, this error message has also been know to occur when the Hsflop.pdr file is missing or damaged. If you are looking for updated drivers, view the following Microsoft Web site for additional assistance:

To be more precise, x86 CPU exception 0Dh is the #GP (General Purpose) exception. It can occur when a company hires a stupid ass programmer who accesses NULL pointers.

Now, tell this young person what they need to do to resolve this problem.
So it's a fault, they know that.
Who came close so far? cpugeniusmv did.
Why? Because he posted a link to a KB article? Yah kinda.
What did the article say? It says that it may be caused by a driver, and used video as an example.
SO what are the facts?
1) a tattered W98 O/S
2) a problem when W98 goes to shut down
3) they use DSL, which means broadband and Network Card
4) they run zone alarm and AVG anti-virus in conjunction with Kazaa or Winmx
What may we postulate from the above?
W98 does not reallocate memory (RAM) properly, and is subject to the term "resources" which is a small memory range that Windows uses to control apps and hardware.
When running apps that tax RAM, and a combination of hardware drivers that access memory ranges, and a NIC that needs a buffer, and an AGP aperture, and the memory for display drivers, audio, printers, etc, Windows will buckle when asked to shut down apps and processes in the background in order to close and save Windows.
I leave you with this. Now where does one go from here to correct this error?
What are other appropriate questions to ask in order to better make a diagnosis?
What can the user do or use to help with this determination?

does this happen every time you use kazaa lite?
if so, i would recommend a reinstallation.

try running either kazaa or winmx without anything else running in the background and see if you get the same error.

I am also interested in how much ram is installed, and how long 98 has been running since the last install. Also how much is running in the background?

Well good old AIDA32 is always a good choice for system info, and also running msconfig is a good basic starting point. Another thing is if it hasnt already been done, I would run either Ad-Aware, or spybot search and destroy to clean up any spyware that could be running.

Yea! good one
Also, Upon a clean start
Go to Start > Programs > Access > System Tools > System Information
On the right side 2/3 the way down, look for % System Resources Free, this is the ticket.
Now on the left side, look under Software, at Running . . and it will tell you what is running, Toooo much! There should only be about 8 - 10 things there, this guy will have 20 or more.
Now go up to Tools > System Configuration
Go to the Startup Tab, and begin to deselect everything that is not 100% essential for windows to boot. ONLY keep a firewall, or driver path. (and the registry one)
Right Click My Computer > Properties > Performance Tab > Typical Role Of This Computer > Network Server.
NOW Reboot,
and then go back to System Information, and try to get around 95% System Resources Free.
Now look on the left at the Hardware > IRQ and Problem Devices, see if there are IRQ conflicts, or excessive sharing on any one IRQ.
.................................................. .................................................. .............
Now use the Aida32 util, and examine the report. Look for any instances where it indicates performance problems, and use the URLs embedded to update all drivers, starting with the Chipset Drivers for the MotherBoard. Then procede to video, audio, printer etc.
Go to Start > Programs > System Monitor
Then Edit > Memory > Unused Physical Memory
Select View > Always on Top
Select 123 so you get a numeric display.
Launch on Start up, WATCH THIS as you run your apps and shut down, notice what it tells you about CPU usage and Memory.
Once you have your envirnment cleaned up,(and Spybot) and you are running lean and clean, (not antivirus) then try Kazaa for a while, then shut down. If the problem persists, then uninstalling the app, and reinstalling to a new location other than program files may be in order.
Disclaimer: I do not run W98, I am doing this from sheer memory, so if it isnt exactly where I described, sue me.

Also the resource meter will give a quick and dirty idea of how bad the situation is. Usually very scary. Also Krell does not mean a fast reboot, but shut things down, and wait about 5 min, then fire it up again. PS good luck.

Ok bud save yourself a lot of testing, just ask him how long it was running the present install of windows. It could very messed up if it was a long time, and he did a lot of installs, and deletes. You dont have a lot of ram to play with either, and as 98 is a memory hog a first priorty would be if it was me would be more ram. That is as money permits.
