ok, its been a whole long time since the last version of winmx came out 3.31, and now its getting very old. I would like to know if anyone can tell me when the next winmx is coming out. That would be awesome.... Thank you in advanced.. Also, i was wondering if there were any napster clones, that act and look exactly like napster.

First Danny, change your signature... go to User control panel (the button at the top that says "User CP") and go to the button that says "Update Profile"... scroll down to the section that says "signature" and
ERASE YOUR PROPER NAME FROM YOUR SIG!!!

This is not a place for your actual name. People will not take you seriously if they see yoour name in the signature box. It is a place for a quote or a thought, not your actual name. You have a user name, Grimdevil69, refer to yourself as this and put it into the box if you need a name as a signature (plus, everyone knows that you are homeya13 if they see the sig.).

No one knows when the next WinMX is coming out. This has been the subject of at least two threads that I know of. On the front page, there is a search box... enter your query as "WinMX new" or just "WinMX" and you should find one of these threads, but there is no information contained within, so it is a futile endeavour.

If you want to know when the next release is coming out, find the programmers and ask them. I am sure that they can be searched down somehow through Google.com or one of the online FAQs that i often see posted on this site. Just ask them. They will most likely say that they don't know either though so this is still a waste of time.

I would just check back and someday, if the Gods are smiling on us, there will be a new version of WinMX shown in the new releases area of the site.

If you want something that looks exactly like Napster, go to oldversion.com and download an older version of Napster from the site. Then, search down a program called "Napigator" through Google or some other search engine to allow yourself to navigate through OpenNap servers. It will be just like 1999, with incomplete downloads and inconsistent reliability.

Good Luck Danny!

hmm... i dont think you can even do that... bc napster would need to register an sn. i tried awhile ago. since the server wasnt there, it forced an exit... the only way i got around this was exporting a shitload of registry keys and values, and copying some dat files.

well, while we are on the napster topic, how do i register??? i tried a few weeks ago, and i couldn't even connect to a server. If anyone could tell me that would be great.

I used napigator after Napster was shut down. It just opens Napster, if it is on your computer, and connects it to an openNap server. It does not connect to Napster servers, it just uses the program to DL from OpenNap.

I would try, but this is an old program and I know that Napigator has ad-ware bundled with it.

The program is still available at Napigator.com.

Edit: By the way Danny, Napster was shut down about 2 years ago. You can't really register there and why would you want to? Just use a new program such as WinMX... it can connect to OpenNap servers, so it is very similar to Napster if you think about it, yet is much more powerful!

thanks, but i tried, and i have to connect to a server on my own, because napigator is crapped up.

that's open nap for you, just use win mx at
www.winmx.com
It has all the features of open nap, and its own network, and then some!

Hey, I thought you had lin x, what happend with that?

What more do you want added to it? Does it seem like theres anything wrong with it right now? If they're not adding any new features, and theres nothing wrong with it, how can they release a new version? Not that I mean to sound like an ass or anything, but thats just what I think.

When Monkey's fly out of my butt! Oh wait that happened last thursday. I really dont know. Me thinks frontcode may have changed winmx to much if its taken this this long to release, or maybe they changed their mind and arent going to make the radical changes they said the were, or maybe ES5 was their new release and we didnt know it. Did i mention monkeys flew out of my butt?

How about dealing with 100+ queue situation? I was big supporter of winmx before the it begin to resemble the line to see the mall Santa on Christmas Eve.

Don't get me wrong. When you get to the downloading part its a great program (the multi-source downloading is awesome) but the problem is how long you have stay in line to get to the downloading part.

Alright, I will admit, this does tend to be a problem, but only when searching for a file that not many people have. In this case, I'm afraid the only thing you can do is wait. One thing I would like to see added, is separate queues for users on slow and fast connections. Also, test the connection speed of each user, just to be sure that someone that says they have a cable connection isn't just some moron on 56k and thinks that by selecting cable his connection will be faster (I've seen it). But as for the more popular songs on there, generally there is no waiting, because THE MOST POPULAR version of a song, the one the most people have, theres usually AT LEAST 60 or 70 people that have it, and theres other ones there too.

ya i guess you are right... winmx does have a ton of queu's and also doesn't need that much improving. i will just wait till it comes out with the next version

Well, I'm a big Winmx fan and have been following its progress for a while now.

WinMX 4 will be the next release. Thankfully, Frontcode has been looking into the queue situation since its been the biggest complaint from its users thus far. Therefore, Frontcode's goal for V4 is to completely erase the queue problem starting with making a queue hierarchy much like Shareaza's (which actually works well) They say that V4 will be out for beta testing sometime this SUMMER, so look out for it.

Other things I hear on the grapevine:
1. New Skinning system and/or GUI. Yes, the look WILL be greatly enhanced. I think its gonna follow the same layout somewhat, but in a more logical manner.
2. Faster performance. I hear 4 is going to be a major overall of the V3 network, possibly another rewrite. Goal seems to be to surpass Kazaa in terms of performance as Kazaa is #1 and Winmx is #2, so the best way is to make file sharing as easy and powerful and fast as possible.
3. File linking. Have no idea how they're gonna do this, but I'm guessing its gonna be like ed2k, due to WinMX's not so advanced hashing format.

they f*cked up the interface and PLUS the network. I have to admit that the network in WinMX 2.6 was WAY better and WAY Faster the only thing wrong was it didnt have multi-source but hey? atleast it didnt have the queu problem and the interface was user friendly which WinMX 3.31 isnt at all of course i've been using WinMX since the napster days so i know how to use it but i think a newbie would have difficulties trying to knwo what are all those buttons for they should of kept it basic it was better and they shouldnt have changed networks they should of just added multi-source and leave everything the same.

well, that is some nice n' juicy stuff u got there, neoufo51!
hope it's all true.
i also wonder if Frontcode may be exploring ways to hide ips, as does es5 claims it will.
u think they would???
man, i just can't wait and am getting impatient already.

i've learned not to get anxious about p2p application development. first rapidroad, then pft......i hope this will be different.

i agree, Mel.
hey, remember when they came out with the first 3.0 version, which kinda sucked, and then straight away, Frontcode came out with 3.31.
i think they were listening to their users.
so now, the wait we endure, makes me think they r coming out with something really great.
something that resolves the issues the users have.

I wonder why no one has ever reverse engineered WinMx? Like the people at SourceForge.
They have reverse engineered FastTrack and others.
It seems to me if this was done there might be more improvements in this program.
I know there are add-ons but no "lite" or "cracked" versions.

It also seems odd to me that the people at FrontCode don't release alot of updates, keep their users very informed, or worry much about losing their user base.

What are you programmers thoughts on this?!?!

yes, CH, they r quite the mysterious lot, now aren't they?
aside from your questions above, it's funny how without all of those things, the app still thrives.
and at the same time the WinMX name stays out of the press fairly well.
maybe that is the objective.
as for the cracks and lites....that is one good question!

Yes exactly... that's the point

They are trying to keep Winmx off of the press so that the RIAA doesn't mind them..

New version...*cries*

WHEN! WHEN! WHEN!

When I first started file sharing I always used WinMx. It was really good. Now its seems to have slowed down a great deal. In an interview they said a new version was comming out soon. That was quite a while ago. Hope it comes out soon. I now use it less than I used to. For albums its great, but it still takes a long time.

Somebody did reverse-engineer the WinMX 2 protocol - and it was included in the lopster p2p program for a while. But the author never updated their work for version 3.
